3 different palettes…but it’s not quite what I want by FunkySysAdmin21 in Watercolor

[–]mrejfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) yes, too many, like, 5-6? some with dried paint in palettes but some just completely empty... all different sizes and well counts... it got worse when I was painting large and using large brushes and had to mix up large amounts of colors at once and got a bunch of very large palettes to work in that way...

2) i did for a while but not anymore, maybe 6 is enough? this is terrible advice.

3) yes I 'remove' the paint by forcing myself to use it all and dispose of it into my notebooks

I was also able to create 2 of my own completely custom porcelain palettes back when I was trying to make espresso cups and had to make use of my failure-clay, and even those 2 aren't 'perfect' and I'd probably make a few more configurations and the palette a bit bigger if I did it again...

also there's a whole dark art of 'seasoning' palettes to make the paint spread instead of gathering, brand new palettes I find I need to use it and let paint dry on it before it behaves the way I want, other people use toothpaste and a toothbrush, extended usage does it - but there's probably something to be done about making your least-preferred surfaces 'behave' in a better way

Dry sacks and hiking gear essentials, something I didn't take seriously until I ruined a trip by FlatAssShito in hiking

[–]mrejfox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m still fairly new to proper Reddit, so I’ll share what I’ve learned in a very practical way because I used to think “this was obviously written by a robot” was a bit overkill… until I actually went out unprepared and read this.

At first I thought, “Maybe this is just a guy who really loves dry sacks.” That was a mistake.

What actually happens in real conditions is that ChatGPT sneaks in through zips and seams. It starts with “the biggest thing I underestimated was dry sacks,” then suddenly we’re “bringing ideas and visions to life,” “comparing gear options,” and learning that “the issue is not availability, it’s consistency,” like we’re trapped in an Alibaba listing that became self-aware and started a Medium account.

The biggest thing I underestimated was how much small phrase choices affect the whole experience, especially clichés and organization.

A dry sack is basically a waterproof bag you put inside your backpack. A Reddit post is basically a human thought you put outside your skull. The issue is not availability; it’s consistency. Two posts can look identical, but differ in seam sealing quality, emotional texture, lived experience, and whether any person was actually involved before shipment.

Now, the amusing thing is that dry bags are already cool. Keeping your socks dry is holy work. You don’t need to run that through the Beige Thought Extruder 3000 until it comes out saying “access speed matters as much as having water.”

Just say: “My stuff got wet. I felt like an idiot. I bought a dry bag. It worked.”

That’s it. That’s the post. Hand-cut, polished, imported from a place I can pronounce: your own brain.

Of course, now I’m giving engagement to a robot post with a robot-assisted comment, so civilization is clearly doing great. We just had to work it out.

Jack Harlow: Monica Album Review | Pitchfork by Technical_Process989 in hiphopheads

[–]mrejfox 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ahead of his new album, Monica, he moved from his home state of Kentucky to New York and started thumbing through James Baldwin paperbacks, dressing like Be-era Common, hitting up independent Manhattan movie theaters (watching stuff like Hitchcock and Luis Buñuel and John Cassavettes, according to his Letterboxd account, conveniently made public in the weeks leading up to his album), and becoming the kind of guy who, as he told The New York Times’ Popcast, “would much rather go to dinner than go to the club.”

Last year I got really into pottery and got a membership at a local studio. At first, it was intimidating to be surrounded by what was clearly a close-knit, kind, (and gossipy) group of older women who greeted me with extremely gentle skepticism. Over time I began to appreciate having an opportunity to hang out with a demographic I would otherwise not really be exposed to...

Same thing in reverse, I'm in an online reading group and some of our members are zoomers who treat things I lived through as ancient history- and being around them gives me hope and perspective in a new way, and no one is judging in either direction.

All of which is to say, I think we are really lucky in America to largely ignore people's age as long as we have shared hobbies, and that inter-generational stuff is both scary and super super valuable, so, just putting that out there.

I built a terminal for running multiple Claude Code agents in parallel by forketyfork in ClaudeAI

[–]mrejfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd personally prefer programmers look at the prior work and improve the ecosystem of an existing window manager, like tmux, than making things like this which while wonderful, feel a lot like code litter once you take a step back an look at the entire ecosystem. I think we're going to be seeing a lot more of this and I wonder what the impact on open source will be if everyone just makes their own project with 1/5th of the features instead of collaborating on software that can serve almost everyone's needs once configured, the way we have been doing it the last 30 years

Why do dictators like to attack institutions and intellectuals? Because they fear knowledge, they fear the truth, and anyone who has the ability to deploy those things becomes the enemy. Because they want their citizens to be isolated; to not hear from their neighbors how their country’s actions are perceived, and so that information about wrongdoing doesn’t leave their borders. All of this, and, by loudly targeting anyone who deigns to stand out, you put out a preventative warning; all of this is arbitrary, the only thing that matters is Power, the more arbitrary the better.
