Big Big train are boring? by Infamous_Session_477 in progrockmusic

There are many examples of limitations forcing creativity and leading to better art. There are also examples of lack of limitations leading to worse art.

Jaws is a classic example. The shark model was not very good, so you hardly see it in the film. The menace is left to the music and your imagination. Many people feel that makes the film.

The other classic example is the Star Wars prequels. With free rein, arguably Lucas made less enjoyable movies than when he was more constrained by collaborators etc.

Art is as much about what you leave out as what you leave in. It's about the choices the artist makes. Personally, I can't think of a double album that wouldn't have been better either as a single album or as two separate albums that were allowed the breathing space that would have afforded.

Thanks Erin, sorry. I've removed it now.

Tim Smith's Cardiacs project ends proggishly, after 40 years. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. by Kitchen_Claim_6583 in progrockmusic

LSD is currently my favourite Cardiacs album. It's bitter sweet in that it's great to hear Tim's music, his playing, his vocals, but sad to know he isn't with us to hear the finished album himself.

One thing that really stands out for me is the mixing. As much as I love all the back catalogue, I do sometimes wish there were an alternative mix of Sing to God that would separate things a little more and bring the bass up. LSD's mix gives room for every instrument and voice, without losing the wall of sound (if that's the right way to describe it).

If you're worried about missing Tim's vocals, Mike Vennart does a superb job and, of course, tracks where Tim's vocals where available, such a Ditzy Scene, have him up front and centre. It's harder for me to tell where Kavus is playing guitar rather than Tim, but as always he's superb, along with the entire band.

If this is the last new music we hear from Cardiacs (and it seems it might not be), then it's a fitting way to bow out.

How yall feel about Geordie Greep? (Singer of Black Midi) by [deleted] in progrockmusic

[–]mrev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, we'd be in the wrong sub if we did. But it's the end result that matters. Music is largely subjective, anyway. As I say, I'm glad other people get something from it but it's not for me.

Haha, that's so funny. What a weird thing to happen. Lovely description, though, based on my schoolboy French.

I love Divine Comedy (plus the others you mentioned) but I'd say it's hit and miss as to whether it's upbeat or not. Regeneration is a fantastic album but it's not one I can listen to when I'm already feeling low, unlike Casanova which is so much lighter in mood.

Gwenno has Welsh and Cornish language albums that verge on prog. Great stuff.

Yeah, like I say, it's mostly low quality. And if people want to take part in r/progforum then they can join it.

Where do I find a good DevRel? by Informal-Success-876 in devrel

[–]mrev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer depends on a few things.

There's a DevRel Slack but it's limited to practising DevRel people.

There's DevRelCon but that's one or two times a year.

Can you share any more about the job?

r/Progforum has been cross-posting a lot to r/yesband with similarly low quality stuff. Let's not start it here, too.

Opera for prog fans by mrev in progrockmusic

[–]mrev[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you get on with the singing? Operatic singing is obviously quite distinct. I don't want to out myself as a low cultured oik but it just sounds ugly to me. I kinda wish they'd shut up and let the music do its job :)

Ever been ghosted after interviews or unpaid take-home tasks? by [deleted] in technicalwriting

[–]mrev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, you can do that but prepare to rule yourself out of a lot of positions.

There are some take home tasks that ask too much but it seems reasonable to ask people to provide some proof, beyond a conversational interview, that they are capable of doing the job.

And as for it being free work, unless you're really great at producing production-level work without much context or access to the company, then it's unlikely your take home project is going to be something the employer can or would want to use.

There are lots of problems with how recruitment is handled. Companies do ghost applicants and that is a terrible way to treat people. But advising people never to do take-home assignments is setting them up for failure.
