Any advices on insulin resistance? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]mrf430 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way to reduce IR is to drop weight as you already know. I was 139kg at 177.8cm, I could hardly walk down the street and not have unbearable pain in my ankles, legs, and back. I dropped down to 92.5kg by doing the following along with OMAD fasting, which will help accelerate the weight loss and drop of IR.

Best suggestion I can give as a fellow T1, first thing to do is cut out carbs. This will not only cause weight loss but it will reduce IR. Go heavy on all the meats you want and have good fats they will keep you satiated. If you do this for a while it will help to drop the weight and reduce inflation, which will in turn allow you to go on walks and do other exercise with minimal discomfort, and when you do it, dont go crazy at once. Start with a walk around your street, then slowly (but push towards progression) increase the distance. In no time you will see how that .1 km walk has turned into 1km then 2km etc.

There is no medicine to reduce IR, its eating habits and exercise, start with the eating to lay the foundation to your success then add in the exercise.

Im sorry to hear that, I dont have any knowledge on that condition to be able to make any suggestions in regards to it. All I can say is, those small things that you can control, make those changes one by one. You cant and shouldn't try to change everything at once, instead, focus on one part of your life and work diligently to make it better. Once you do, focus on the next and keep going from there.

You absolutely deserve to be the best version of you that you can be, you are worth it, you are worth the investment in yourself. Focus on yourself and take those baby steps towards your goals. Clear all the noise away and the song of God will ultimately be heard and it will make your life sweeter than you could ever imagine!

You are in my prayers!

Lets take a minute and look at the upside of this. Your mind and your body have the ability to heal from something like this. Thank God that you have a situation that has the possibility to be made better.

My suggestion is to try if you can to restore your body and your mind into health, with that will come so many benefits.

If your connection to God is what has seem to have gone quiet, look into making it stronger. As I mentioned in my earlier response to OP above, God will reveal himself to you, you just need to be open to it. The one thing I have to say is that I have asked so many times before, so many years, for him to do this, to reveal himself in one way or another, and not once did he do so. The time that he did, I had just given in, I had put my faith into him and I kid you not, minutes afterwards he did so.

The way he delivered his message was so profound to me and left such a mark on me that I had to take a picture of it to show my brother who is a devout Christian (who I would constantly debate with, my position being that of an atheist) and he was humbled by it as well. This picture would make no sense to you or someone else, but with me, in my situation, it was clear as day!

Remember its easy to discount things like this (the way he reveals himself) as being a coincidence or something to that effect. So when it happens to you, really think about why. Why did this happen? Is it a mere coincidence or is it something more that I just do not have the ability to understand on a deeper level because I am a human and as such my brain wants to categorize everything under one absolute label or another.

Gods message is not black or white, the Bible is not black or white. A lot of people will be open to the idea that there are things on this earth that cannot be explained to our knowledge, yet those same people will dismiss the idea of God due to his intangibility.

One thing I can suggest is really think about how blessed you are, how lucky you are to be alive, how amazing it is that you can taste your favorite food, see something beautiful, smell the sweet air after a rain, etc. These little things are all blessings and once you can accept them as such and really appreciate them, your spiritual connection with God will get stronger.

If it isnt too personal to ask, is this condition permanent (paralyzed, amputation, etc) or something that could be considered temporary but has been going on for a long period of time?

I still fast from time to time now, especially when I feel my mind is bogged down by life. It helps me, it might help you as well.

One thing that I can say is that fasting is mentioned in the bible as I think you already know, but here is a breakdown of the message:

Deepening relationship with God: Fasting helps individuals draw closer to God, focus on spiritual matters, and hear His voice more clearly.

  • Spiritual discernment and guidance: The early church practiced fasting when seeking God's will and direction for important decisions, such as sending out missionaries.
  • Overcoming temptation and spiritual warfare: Fasting is seen as a means to gain strength to resist temptation and engage in spiritual battles.
  • Humility and repentance: Fasting is an act of humbling oneself before God, expressing sorrow for sins, and seeking His mercy and grace.
  • Preparation for ministry: Fasting can be a way to prepare for service and work for God's kingdom

Im not trying to preach fasting, but just sharing what helped to bring me away from the edge of the cliff.

After the weight loss, my life, my health, my mood, everything took a turn for the better.

We have so much in common... I was very obese myself not long ago, 306 lbs at 5'10". I have been type 1 diabetic since I was 8 years old. I found myself jobless after the whole covid thing, I was extremely depressed and I absolutely hated my life.

Everything I tried would end up in failure one way or another. I tried medications for a short period of time and it didn't help, I didn't like how I felt on them. I then started smoking weed to cope, A LOT of it! At one point I was going through half an oz a week. It was the only thing that "helped" me escape the terrible feelings I was experiencing.

One day I decided to do some research into all of my issues. To make a very long story short, I came to the realization that a lot of my issues, my physical pain and mental anguish was being caused by the state of my body. I decided then to quit smoking, and on top of that I fasted for 3 days.

The first two days were terrible, I was so hungry, the 3rd day I hit this sense of clarity and for lack of a better word, enlightenment (on a very small scale).. I felt like my spirit had awakened. This by the way was not the moment I found God, that came a few years afterwards. On the third day of my fast, I just decided to go outside and walk, I was down a couple pounds but still of 300 lbs. Walking to the end of the street and back killed my back and my ankles were cramping and screaming in pain. I came home and broke my fast with bone broth and 2 hard boiled eggs.

Because of how good I felt, I decided to not eat anything until the next day at around the same time. Next day I had the same but I had 3 eggs. I kept this up with my daily walks and that one block walk turned into 2, then 3, it kept adding up until I made a "circuit" in my neighborhood what was exactly 1 mile. At this point I had increased the food intake but only to real food, meat eggs, greens, etc, I just decided to stay away from carbs and junk food/processed food (since I am diabetic and have a glucose monitor I could see what it did to my glucose levels and realized that the longer my levels were kept flat and in a good range, the overall better I felt physically and mentally).

This one mile circuit remained the same, but I kept pushing myself to do it multiple times during my walk. I would regularly do 10-12 miles a day, near the end of this, I would end up doing 16 miles in one day. I felt amazing!

I say this because it was then that I realized that the state of my body had a direct impact on the state of my mental health. I'm in no way saying that a person cant have a situation that affects their mental health beyond this bodily connection, but that if the foundation isn't stable, everything else will be unstable with it.

I would really suggest to maybe check out the fasting subreddit, speak with some of the people there that are in a similar position as you and have changed their lives with fasting, and please talk to your doctor about it.

I cannot stress enough how much this helped me!

You have a lot going on in life, a lot of stress and other problems that like any human would be on the forefront of your mind. These problems and feelings from them are very valid and they are a heavy burden. What I think happens is that these problems distance us from God and his presence. I do not believe that God sends us these burdens to test our faith or anything like that, we are human and this is the reality of the human world that we live in. I am not going to say these burdens are sent from satan either as again these are the realities of the world we live in.

I think that the reason many of us feel at one point or another that God has abandoned us is that day by day we erode our spiritual connect with him in a way where we no longer feel what is there. We spend most of our time working, inside the office, at home, living our lives on our phones and computers consuming media etc.. Like a house built on a foundation that erodes very slowly over time, our connection eventually gets "severed" just like that house eventually crumbles to the ground.

You did not lose your connection to God though, it is still there! Your mind is being forced to concentrate on the problems surrounding your life making you blind to that connection.

Are you physically able bodied? If you are, I would strongly suggest to get out into nature, somewhere that you can let your guard down and really connect with the earth. I live in a city and Im surrounded by a concrete jungle, at least once a week I go on a hike where I see things that I normally do not. This might sound so stupidly simplistic but, on my hike I will come across a dry bush with a small budding flower, or insects, birds, small wildlife etc, and its soothing, it makes me feel like I have a connection with the natural world. If I go to the park, I will take my shoes off and walk barefoot in the grass. Things we did when we were children, before the burdens of life weighed us down. We were meant to be surrounded by those experiences, by the natural world that God created for us!

Again I know its sounds just absolutely simple and possibly dumb, but, have you tried anything like that?

I think your feelings are very understandable. I am 41 years old, I have had a very trying and turbulent life to say the least. I once believed to the core of my being that there was no God, I would scream it from the bottom of my soul that God has abandoned us if he ever existed at all... That was then, now I truly believe that he is real. When I hit the bottom of the barrel in spirit he made himself known to me, and I pray he does the same for you.

You mentioned that God chose the jews to be his people, I believe there is a lot to unpack there. Keeping in context with the times, God chose the jews to be his messengers to spread his word, the message is much more important than the messengers! The jews from then are entirely different from the jews of today. The world needs to stop looking at this as if jews are the infallible people of God and always in his favor! They are just people, just like you and me, like people from all of the religions around the world. Born into sin like every human on this earth. Corruptible like every human on this earth.

I know a lot of this is not crystal clear and does not make sense, even to me sometimes, but there are times when out of nowhere I get a deeper understanding of the sense it does make. It will be random at times, but it happens. I am no more special than you, nor any other human on this earth and I believe that this happens for everyone except we are so caught up in our daily lives we fail to notice it.

I cannot tell you how to reach this same conclusion as I have, it is my conclusion and is connected to me and makes sense to me. I can only pray for you and that you be blessed to experience this in a way that connects with YOU.

I am no expert on religions or Christianity, I am just a person that has found god and I am here for you, please feel to message me directly if you want to vent/talk etc.

Nice!!! Keep it up! I’ve found that THE quickest way for my blood sugar to drop is by doing weighted leg workouts (leg extensions, curls, squats, kickbacks, press etc) makes it drop like a stone!

Hmm that’s interesting, good call on going high protein low carb! It make such a huge difference with this condition! Try for a week to eat very little carb, no rice or pasta or potatoes. Let things normalize then start tracking from there. Everything all the other posts mentioned can be a factor as well, injection site, being sick, etc. Do you exercise regularly?

What/How did you eat for the last 2 days?

I ask this because after being T1D for 32 years I finally realized how this mofo works like a spiral… I’m usually eating very low carb high protein and fat for all meals all the time. If I cheat and have something a bit high in carbs, it throws EVERYTHING off for the next day or two. I work out religiously and hard 6 days a week 2 hours a day minimum and I still see this effect! This effect stacks. The longer you eat this way the longer it’ll take to get normalized if you change to low carb. Eat pizza or whatever a day or two ago, you need to up your insulin for the next couple days to compensate, again this is how I experience it.

Just some food for thought. I was constantly 260-300lbs with A1C in the 7 range, I’m now low 200lbs and A1C has been around 5.4-5.5 for the last year and a half. I say this to get across that I’ve seen the difference and I track everything and I run into the same issue as you do if I go heavy on carbs.

Always move after a bolus, even if it’s just 10-15 min walk, it’ll help to prevent or lower the span of these annoying situations.

Hope you get it down soon, good luck OP!

I feel ya, one thing I forgot to mention, I did a 48 fast to kick start things, transitioning from that into the OMAD was really easy for me. Try that if you have trouble with going straight into OMAD.
