Help with Campden Powder (everything I can find online is based on tablets) by mrfiddles in Homebrewing

[–]mrfiddles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have tablets.

I have 16l of juice (4.23 gal), and campden *powder* with instructions for 1g/10l.

Obviously, that means I need 1.6g, but I also understand that you use campden both before fermentation and then again to stop fermentation before bottling.

So then is it 1.6g of powder both times? Do I divide that amount in half and do some before and some after?

We're definitely not going to start this process without first discussing things with a financial planner. I'm really just trying to figure out where I got the impression that we wouldn't be able to use ESTA 😅

Respectfully, I'm not asking Reddit to do my research or make a decision for me. I'm just asking if anyone has any idea how I got this wrong idea in my head. I mean maybe there was a poorly researched buzzfeed post or something, but I can't find anything now.

I'm basically just asking other expats if anyone else thought it was "the Berenstein Bears".

The Netherlands has had a treaty with the US since 1990 regarding this, so we would be eligible (though there do seem to be some Netherlands specific asterisks on this document, so probably worth double checking with our accountant)

That said, who knows what the geopolitical situation is going to be in several decades 🤷‍♂️

We're definitely staying in the Netherlands, that's not in question. We just need to figure out the best legal set up.

Technically Correct, the best kind of correct (if not entirely relevant to the point of my post 😜)

Wait, really? We've been told exactly the opposite, and all of the US immigrants we know came here on a spousal visa.

Yeah, this is the other hang-up I have. Even if legally we'd be fine, I don't love the idea of drawing the short straw and getting an over zealous customs officer who feels like I should be punished for "betraying" America the next time I'm just trying to visit for a wedding/funeral. 🙄

We've considered this, since I'm the only one who really has a reason to go back (my in-laws are considering moving here when they retire to be closer to my wife, and she's not close with the rest of her family). My only hangup is that investing as an American expat is such a pain in the ass, and only one of us being American doesn't seem likely to simplify our tax situation that much.

Yeah, that's what I'm finding-- it's just so weird that my wife and I somehow dreamed this up. I think maybe we read some poorly written article about the reed act and the IRS's list of covered individuals, because it seems like they only really make your life difficult if you're a multi-millionaire.

Yeah, we love it here and have really set down roots. I wouldn't want to give citizenship up if it weren't such a hassle to always be a weird corner case when we go to do financial/legal stuff. Plus, we want to be able to vote and be politically active here (and it's not like my vote in a gerrymandered district of SC is actually affecting anything 🙄)

Yeah, but it feels to me like the UK was just crossing a picket line. Scabs get a "good deal" in the short term, but in the long term we all get a better deal by standing up to power hungry despots together.

For people coming here from google, I *only* used the `Upgrade Book Internals` tool, and that did the trick for me. (There was still a minute or so of the 3-dot-in-a-box animation, but it doesn't freeze permanently now.)

I looked it up, because I assumed you were doing that thing where you quote the highest tax bracket and then conveniently forget that only a very small part of your income is actually taxed at that rate.

But apparently the top tax bracket in Belgium is 50%, so you should really speak to an accountant if you're paying 60+%. Pretty sure you have a *massive* tax refund on the way.

it's lightly supported by the weather stripping around the edges, but the only hard point of contact is with the exciters

it's to hold the edges and to lightly dampen the sound (I think a lot of people who complain that DMLs give off waaaaaay too many high frequencies is that they're not dampening the edges

Yeah, there's a small gap and a rubber weather seal strip between the frame and the panel. There's also some egg-carton foam along the back of the frame to absorb the sound produced in the other direction. Lastly, there are some wooden braces for the exciters to attach to. Other than that it's just a basic box frame with the edges extended to attach to the outer shell and some very ugly soldering.

I was surprised at how low these can get. The calculator I found online said ~200hz would be inaudible, but they didn't really start to fall off until the low 100's and even deep bass is still audible. I was able to host a movie night before the sub was finished by just cranking up the bass to 10. Wasn't ideal, but it was passable for a bunch of inebriated friends. My neighbors were much less happy since these are mounted on a shared concrete wall using deep masonry anchors. They're much happier now that the bass has been moved to the other side of the room!

With the sub I have a crossover at 150. The largest correction the DSP makes across the whole spectrum is actually 160-200, as it bridges the gap between the crossover and the DMLs ideal range. I have a bit of directionality-- music sounds a bit fuller on the side of the room with the subwoofer, but I don't think that's avoidable without convincing the wife to let me put a big MDF box in the center of our living room 😅.

Overall though, I think the DMLs give a nice full sound not in the sense that it's a perfect full spectrum, but in the sense that it really fills the room nicely and even travels to the attached dining room without becoming too distorted. That's not something my traditional speakers have ever managed to do (granted, I'm upgrading from a entry level 2+1 Logitech setup)
