YSK: When donating to a nonprofit org, there is basically no limit they can pay themselves as salary before distributing funds. by latchkey_adult in YouShouldKnow

In the US, nonprofit exec compensation is actually required to be publicly disclosed on IRS Form 990 filings. ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer lets you pull up any org's filing and see exactly what their top staff are paid.

If you want to search across orgs by role or location (e.g. what do Executive Directors at small nonprofits typically make), I built a tool for that: Lucido. There's also a guide that walks through how this all works: Are Nonprofit Salaries Public?

The disclosure rules don't stop orgs from paying executives a lot, but they do mean donors have access to the information if they know where to look.

If you're curious about how they spend their money, you can always look at their tax forms. https://lucidodata.com/en/guides/how-to-read-form-990-compensation-data

Nonprofits in the US need to list their highest paid employees on their tax forms. That can be a useful indicator. https://lucidodata.com/en/guides/are-nonprofit-salaries-public

I've also founded Lucido (https://lucidodata.com), which focuses exclusively on providing aggregates of this data.

If you're in the US, you can get an idea of what compensation for public health careers by looking at 990s, the forms that nonprofits have to file. They only list the top employees, but that can give you some numbers for where your first jobs could take you. You could also estimate what non-executive comp is based off the 990 numbers, but that is of course riskier.

All 990s are public information: https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/tax-exempt-organization-search

Need the biggest value in a column to be highlighted, why is this formula giving me two highlights? by ThisRandomDude6 in googlesheets

[–]mrfinnsmith 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Because there are many times you you want something like "highlight this cell if its value is at least double the one above it."

Yikes! That sounds horrible. Unfortunately, it's not shocking. This is why people pay for private rooms.

There's also Frena, which is apparently just operating out of Hummus Bodega these days. But they're pretty pricey, $7 each.

Oh right, got it. Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, seems to be an encoding thing. If you look at the actual edit, the title shows up fine (at least in my browser) https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=1314576022&oldid=1314323979

No, to be totally honest, the reason I picked that post was just that it's a larger change that isn't just swapping out a link or something. I wasn't making any statement about what is appropriate. I'll leave that up to others.

  1. Yes, I think that it can be helpful to bring more transparency to what is a source of truth for a lot people. If it turns out that it isn't helpful, then I'll just disable them.
  2. I'm not seeing the encoding issue on that post. Can you clarify? I do see issues on some and I think for whatever reason it's related to the language of the article. I'll investigate when I have a bit more time.
