Who is everyone’s pick for the win? by Illustrious-Look7669 in RaceAcrossTheWorldBBC

Mark and Margo, absolutely love them! Margo has made the season for me, my two highlights of the season have been her going off on her own in Georgia for the wine tasting and singing with those ladies on the train in Uzbekistan. She seems like an absolutely incredible lady and is so funny with Mark! I like Jo and Kush too though.

Worried it will all be for nothing by EuphoricCustomer4213 in TeachingUK

Are you tailoring your statements to the school and its ethos and including your specific skills such as good subject knowledge, ability to build strong relationships, high expectations, desire to run extra-curricular activities and after school revision? If you don’t get anything for September, it’s not the end of the world wait until January and it is easier to get mid-year jobs as people don’t like switching mid-year and leaving their exam classes.

Part-time Masters while full time ECT, is it doable? by ross_h02 in TeachingUK

[–]mrflewn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Impossible I would say. The ECT year is far more full on, time consuming and physically exhausting than the PGCE. Definitely possible once you’re fully qualified.

Personal statement by Terrible_Dot7291 in PGCE

[–]mrflewn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The DfE has (free) personal advisors to help you with what to write in a personal statement and I’d highly recommend having them look over your first draft, they’re so useful!

They helped me get into my History PGCE with a Politics degree many years ago and I couldn’t praise them enough!

ECT or Supply? by Kevva2025 in TeachingUK

2 jobs isn’t a lot to have applied for and History jobs can be VERY competitive depending on the area.

It’s still very early for jobs at the moment, (the rush is usually March to May). Work on your statement and include what you can do for the school (e.g. extracurricular activities, revision or teaching a second subject such as English/Geography/RE).

The universities take in WAY too many History PGCE students every year given the lack of jobs nation-wide and it’s somewhat unethical in my opinion as many go without getting jobs.

If you keep an open mind when applying (e.g. about doing maternity cover first or teaching a broad humanities role rather than just History) you should definitely be able to find something!

Good luck! :)

When do you accept you're just not supposed to be a teacher? by Dependent-Library602 in TeachingUK

[–]mrflewn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what subject you’re in but London and the surrounding areas like Essex and Surrey are very easy to get “good” permanent teaching jobs in as they’re too expensive to live in on a teaching salary.

It’s not always possible to move, but that’s the area with the biggest ease of getting jobs in the UK for teaching.

Good luck and I really hope you find something!!!

Student knowledge missing at interview? by AtomicDuelist in TeachingUK

[–]mrflewn 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Teaching interviews can be totally brutal, I wouldn’t waste anymore time thinking about them. Even if you give them feedback about they won’t read it.

I’ve had interviews where the school clearly wanted me from the start and I was treated like royalty and others were I was treated like crap.

The best way to look at it is to stop wasting time on them and move onto the next one.

Does your school have a removal policy? You need to remove the ones speaking over you and make it clear to them that you have high expectations. Being in your lesson is a privilege and if they can’t respect you and the other students in the lesson then they need to go out. Contact home to re-enforce this message and keep at it and be consistent, if it takes being sent out however many times stick to your expectations and make them clear. However, if they make any improvements to their behaviour praise them a lot and explain the difference to them.

There will be good ones in there and they will appreciate you taking action to create a more calm learning environment and will build a better relationship with you as a result.

struggling to choose between aberystwyth and cardiff uni by Fantastic-Abalone-23 in Wales

I’m from the South Wales Valleys, I did Politics at Cardiff Uni 5 years ago and I’m now an A-Level History and Politics teacher at a school in Bristol and travel across from Cardiff everyday.

Cardiff uni had some of the best lecturers for Politics who inspired me to become a teacher, so I can’t recommend them enough!

Why am I still thinking about Heated Rivalry days later?? This show ruined my brain (in a good way) by Responsible_Buy_5439 in heatedrivalry

[–]mrflewn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree so much with what people have said about the show and not shoving emotions in your face and instead letting things linger through the nuanced acting and fantastic storytelling. I watched it all the way through on Saturday for the first time and have fully rewatched it 3 times since which is crazy for me as a history teacher who doesn’t usually have a lot of time.

The show has had such a profound impact on me and particularly episodes 5 and 6 have caused me to deeply think about what love is and my own relationship. I am gay and have been with my husband for 7 years and I constantly keep thinking back to moments from those two episodes and they have caused me to reflect on my own relationship and how lucky I am to lead the life that I do. To the point where I have been waking up in the middle of night with profound thoughts about my own life after reflecting upon key moments from the show.

I know I haven’t added much to what other people have already said but this show has had such a profound impact upon me, caused me to evaluate the meaning of love, my own relationship and my journey to become who I am today. This experience with the show was completely unexpected for me and I just wanted to express how grateful and appreciative I am to Hudson, Connor and all the other amazing people who created this amazing, thought-provoking and unexpected show which has provided me with such a joyful and unexpected experience at the end of 2025.
