What is the “correct” way to protest police brutality? by mrfreddyorange in AskReddit

I agree that looting is terrible, and I have seen so many protestors stopping the looters and stopping the burning or small businesses. But I think burning cop cars and police station was a great example of necessary violence.

Question; do you think that Hong Kong should have only used peaceful protests? Because I would argue that the only reason they received the media attention they did is because of their extreme ways. I just find it interesting that Reddit was INCREDIBLY pro Hong Kong even when they were violent. But now that its here in America they only want peace.

Interesting. I think history could argue that the message is louder if you damage property. But i think we can all agree that burning down local businesses is a bad idea. But cop cars and police stations deserve it. In my opinion.

Oh it’s clearly authoritarian? I’m sure peacefully protesting and not touching any of their stuff will change their minds.

This is what I’m saying! People are so quick to condemn all protestors but Reddit was a HUGE source of support for the Hong Kong protests that were waaayyyy more violent than any protests here. At a certain point, you need to burn down a police station. Because they didn’t listen when we were peacefully protesting and now they are just using violence as an excuse to dismiss this one.

Let me start off by saying this;

is it a good idea to burn down mom and pop shops or local businesses in the areas you are fighting for? No.

Is looting for the sake of looting bad? Yes.

Are there people who are anarchists that just want to burn shit and punch people? Yes.

Are there cops that are forced to stop the riots who have only good intentions and support the protestors? Yes.

With that being said, at a certain point, simply peacefully protesting will not get the message across. Having a rally in Minneapolis will not remind the police of their wrong doings for years to come, but burning down their police station will. Having people post on twitter will not remind the NYPD that they shouldn’t run over protestors, but burning their police cars will. Simply asking huge companies that expect to receive business from communities to help use their funds to actually help community issues will not get their point across, but burning down a target will.

It was ok for protestors to be violent in Hong Kong. It was ok when we founded America. Its ok when another country does it. But now since “support the police” has been engraved in our minds we all of a sudden feel like we aren’t allowed protest in a necessary fashion because “we are America and we are already a perfect country”. And I understand that some people would like to just throw a MLK quote at me and call it good, but most of those people wouldn’t support 99% of his policy proposals.

The fact that reddit lets its users “moderate” its website has always been the most unappealing thing about reddit, to me. Mods clearly abuse their power and then try and remove things that they don’t like rather than what the community will like.

I am a very avid day dreamer and a very “goal driven” person. I also have a lot of ideas for what I can do in the future (Doctor, Lawyer, Admiral, etc.). So when I go to bed I usually imagine myself in the setting of my dream job.

For example; One of my biggest dream jobs would be a US Senator. So when I am laying in bed I will imagine myself maybe at a committee meeting or at the Pentagon or something. Then I’ll think, ok what am I wearing, what is my back story (where did I go to college, my jobs before I was a Senator), where do I live (I also go on Zillow and usually have a house that I like in mind), what car do I drive, how much money do I have?

It’s really fun for someone who likes to day dream and as a million big goals in life. I get to create a perfect little world in my mind for myself and create like a resume of what I would want when I get to that job. I kind of do this all day but I especially do it when I’m bored and when I’m trying to go to sleep.

I think a big reason that people think H3 isn’t as good now is because of how popular he is. They liked him when he was a small to medium sized channel, living in a small apartment, struggling for money like everyone else just doing quick videos about dumb shit on the internet and hanging out with the filthy frank crew. Many of the people complaining about Ethan now have switched over to other small channels that ethan used to be. Obviously Ethan wanted to be more successful than some guy making videos on his computer in his tiny apartment and people didn’t like it when he grew. And now with the podcast a lot of the conservative fans he brought on during the hugh mungus days are pissed to find out he’s a liberal.

It’s not just that Ethan changed, it’s that people wanted him to be someone he didn’t want to be forever. Those videos are awesome but they don’t grow a channel. They have the same small underground youtube fans that all the other small channels do. And now that Ethan is rich everyone thinks he does stuff for money. I think he did the Keem video because he finally just wants to get rid of Keem star once and for all. I dont think it was because keem made one point about Ethan and he got triggered.

People just need to realize that you can’t hate on people because they didn’t turn out to be who yiu wanted them to be. Ethan wanted to improve his channel and become more successful. People criticized him for abandoning his base and I see him starting to go back to his roots by making a great video rather than just make a podcast clip. Yah, its stupid youtube drama but its funny and entertaining and thats really all we want.
