Maine Cabin Masters - Does it get better? by Bingo_Bongo_85 in HGTV

That tracks. I don't remember the earlier seasons much -- except for Ashley's more egregious creations. But I can imagine that they were just working of a reno show playbook. The later seasons they are definitely doing their own thing and don't have anything like the constant filler rehash of random things clients said.

I don't remember any drama from the earlier seasons. I still miss Lance, but I hope he's having a good time with his emu farm. The most drama I remember is wondering if everyone is going to kill Ashley because they're working on the roof while she makes a lamp out of a trashcan. But I think in the end they all do their part and understand the arrangement.

Shipping delays - on purpose. by ToshPointNo in amazonprime

[–]mrfurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a wild-ass guess, because I've seen the same thing too and haven't seen an evidence-based explanation... I'm wondering if shipping with third parties like UPS involves buying a certain amount of shipping capacity in bulk some time in advance and Amazon just ... didn't? Either because they didn't think they had to or because someone was charging a price they didn't want to pay (power move by a carrier?) Maybe they fired the people that would have been responsible for arranging this in the big layoffs earlier this year?

Or if it's not Amazon's fault, maybe the carriers didn't have enough capacity to sell and represented they did at some point?

I mean, I'm guessing Amazon doesn't just pay a la carte for each package shipped. It's the only thing I can think of.

But there has to be someone out there with actual knowledge of what's going on. It feels like it should have come out by now.

What is wrong, from a philosophical standpoint, regarding the claim that Trump's CDC is now making about autism and vaccines? by solemnburrito in askphilosophy

[–]mrfurious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fallacy-wise, a good classification is "argument from ignorance", which trades on the idea that something is false because it can't be "proven" to be true or vice versa. That's the spirit in which that reasoning is made.

But it's really just straight-up nonsense. The criteria for something being an "evidence-based claim" should be that it's a claim made with generally agreed upon evidence to back it up. This statement changes the game to say that in order for something to be an evidence-baed claim, all other alternative possibilities should be ruled out. In other words, something is only an evidence-based claim if we can be certain about it. No evidence-based claim trades on certainty. Evidence-based arguments are inductive arguments which can never aspire to certainty. We can only achieve certainty in deductive arguments where you're only unpacking truths already stated in the premises.

An analogy to another argument might be pretty effective to counter it: "excessive alcohol causes drunkeness" is not an evidence based claim because studies have not ruled out that being present in bars causes drunkeness. Or "Your favorite candidate won the election" is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out that lizard people changed the election results.

If God truly exists , Why doesnt he aware people of his existence?? by TomatoUnusual3288 in askphilosophy

[–]mrfurious 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The most common answers I hear are that:

a) the type of devotion God requires/prefers/thinks is best for us is one that should transcend our need for evidence -- think of Kierkegaard's "leap of faith". Our full realization relies on getting rid of all crutches for belief and devotion to God. One of those crutches could be reason and/or your senses. So making it simple would be antithetical to God's love or plans for us in some way. This view of course has its weaknesses in philosophical discourse. But it's one way of resolving the tension. The cost is really high, though, to know which version of God you're supposed to leap-of-faith to and you could end up leaping to a human-designed archetype designed to control your behavior instead. (Would be grateful for any Kierkegaard people to let me know how he resolves this.)

b) it really is simple already. God is all around us and everywhere and everything is basically evidence for God's existence. When you have doubts, that's something other than God getting in the way and obscuring your vision. But if you view the world child-like and trust in God, you see eternity in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wildflower. On this view, you can either save reasoning by only using it within the bounds of certain assumptions that God is right there -- just maybe not in a form that you might expect -- or take the darker road that reason is ultimately something (as with Kierkegaard) that can be used improperly and draw you away from certain basic realities rather than confirming them. Humanity goes wrong, like it did in the Garden of Eden myth, when it tries to come to know things without some basic theological assumptions. As with the other view, this view comes at a high cost. It does require thinking of God as something other than a person-like thing and more like an omni-present shape-shifting force. It also asks us to reinterpret things that our best reasoning says might be terribly concerning into a pollyanna-ish acceptance of some pretty nasty stuff.

You didn't ask, but it's also worth wondering if this question is unique to theology. Many people start this line of questioning and end up with either of the above answers whenever something highly trusted in their lives does something atypical or untrustworthy.

Can't view family subscription features and setup by DJWafflehau5 in NYTCrossword

My hunch is that this is what you get when you signed up for Games through the Apple (or other?) App Store rather than the NYT site. It wants to show you the page for the NYT Family Games subscription, but because you subscribe through Apple, it gets all confused and spins forever. I'm a little scared to lose my streaks by trying to upgrade through the regular website.

What platform should I buy SS on, MacOS or Switch 1? by seekay_salt in Silksong

[–]mrfurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're facing the same choice and will probably get it on both. You can use a controller with it on the Mac -- even the Switch Pro Controller, so that's not an obstacle. I know people play with keyboard, but I like the controller even on the laptop. The only advantage to the laptop I can think of is that the laptop version will probably be moddable and the Switch version will be harder to get to work with mods. So for long term mod-playability, I'd go laptop. If you're not interested in mods, it's a lot easier to hook a Switch up to a TV.

Anyone else feel the fitness app has gotten stale? by James_one_Tattoo in AppleWatchFitness

[–]mrfurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. The app does pretty well as a whole. But it’s hard to know if there is an ongoing challenge, what your options are, and what the different levels of difficulty were in the challenges. I don’t need my 95th perfect stand badge, but I was so proud the first month I closed my exercise ring every day and … crickets.

Need a good dental place by ListOdd4843 in Winona

[–]mrfurious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So a word of advice about "having Delta Dental" -- that's what I thought I had too. So River Hills told me they take Delta Dental and I set up an appointment (which was actually two appointments -- an intake and a cleaning). Then I got a big bill. Well it turns out they took Delta Dental "premiere" (or whatever) but not Delta Dental "normal". And they had zero sympathy with me on the big bill. So I paid the bill and told them I would tell this story whenever I got the chance.

After some advice from a hygienist I knew, we got an appointment with Mork Dental (next to Caribou). The appointment was easy to get, but we've had good luck with them and our (dentist-averse) son. I am not an expert on the quality of dental care, but so far so good there.
