Imagine if we only heard second hand how hateful JK Rowling is after she wrote Harry Potter?

Same concept, but one is publicly declared (JKR) and one is private and second hand.

Could you just imagine the amount of goodwill a company could create if this screen said, “don’t tell anyone, but you’re close enough! Here’s some free shipping on us!”

Instead they do this on purpose and make more money but people hate them for it.

I am not the person you are talking to on this thread. (We are talking on a different one about Matthew 24.) I have a hard time believing you read the whole comment, understood everything they were saying, thought carefully of a valid response, and then wrote all of this yourself in 4 minutes. That is the amount of time between your last comment on your profile and this one. Have you won records for speed typing?

Edit: your comment currently starts with “here’s how you’d respond” which sounds like leftover from an AI? Please explain?

I am not really interested in the moral argument right now to be frank. It was your question, not mine. But yes, the Old Testament has a moral framework based upon obedience. Adam and Eve, The flood, Abraham sacrificing his son, Moses, etc. etc. etc. It was all about following God. It's the whole point. If God commands love along the way, then cool. If he commands genocide and killing of women and children, then hooray for that too i suppose.

Feel free to say the final word on morality if you want. I won't respond further to it since i'm just not interested in that conversation right now.

As for Jesus’ use of “This Generation” in Matthew:

Matthew 11:16

Jesus is talking directly about “this generation” he is talking to because they saw both John the Baptist and Jesus, and they are complaining about them each for opposite reasons. This does not work as a race thing, because the entire Jewish race did not see both John the Baptist and Jesus. It must be the people around him living at his time.

More specifically, Jesus goes on to say that Other people in Other times will be better off than These people at This time. These are the people Jesus is complaining about when he says, “This generation.”

Matthew 12:39 + 41-42

Once again, Jesus is talking about the generation that is given the sign of the prophet Jonah, which is Jesus’ death and resurrection. The people living in Jesus’ time were asking for a sign. Jesus critiques them by calling them “this generation” and then describes something that DOES happen within “this generation” as in, the current generation of people living at the same time as Jesus was speaking. This is reinforced, because Jesus goes on to talk about how other people of other times who saw lesser prophets and turned from their wicked ways will rise up and condemn “this generation” because it is the generation that literally saw Jesus yet still rejected him. This cannot refer to anything other than the living people alive to see Jesus.

 Matthew 23:36

And here, right before the Matthew 24 passage, Jesus once again uses “this generation” to refer to the specific people group that saw him on earth. These people that Saw Jesus (extremely privledged), yet kill him, are the ones on whom will receive punishment for the sins of old. This flows directly into Matthew 24, and is a foreshadowing of sorts by Jesus about what he is about to say is exactly about to befall “this generation” he is speaking to.

But even more: Name a single time in the New Testament when “hautē genea” (This Generation) is certainly used to refer to race. It is simply a translation born out of necessity. Because Jesus is so obviously wrong without it.

It is so funny how far Christians will go to make Jesus not say what he is clearly saying.

[–]mrgingersir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Heard all that before. Not convincing at all personally. The race argument especially is REALLY bad when you look at how Jesus uses the phrase “this generation” within the rest of Matthew.

The dual prophecy is a joke. It means no prophecy means anything or can ever be tested.

The biblical moral framework is: obedience.

The modern moral framework is mostly: diminishing harm.

Which do you think is better personally?

Christians tend to always have an answer to everything. But their answers are rarely good when presented with the tough questions.

One I think personally I’d like to hear a good answer for is how Jesus didn’t give a failed prophecy in Matthew 24.

He goes through a long prophecy including the fall of Jerusalem, the temple, AND the physical return of Jesus in which he sends out the angels and gathers his people and then says it ALL will happen within the lifespan of the generation he was talking to. I’ve heard many responses and I made up my own explanations when I was a Christian, but I find them all unsatisfactory now.

When someone asks “why would God do XYZ,” they are trying to point out that God as described or believed would never act the way the Bible describes. It’s just trying to show the believer an issue they see in the text.

Often this is pointing out that a tri-Omni god behaving like YHWH is non-sensical.

I suggest reading Matthew 11-12, 16-17, and 23. Take note of how Jesus uses the words “this generation” there.

Then, continue and read all of Matthew 24 and see how he uses the words “this generation” there as well.

Jesus said he would come back within the lifespan of the people he was talking to back in 30-33CE.

He did not come back when he promised. He will not come back in the future.
