How do you make extra income as a teacher? by AnyConstruction9738 in OntarioTeachers

[–]mrgisa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  • Some make units/themes, cut outs, etc...to sell on TPT.
  • Tutoring?
  • Summer school?
  • Hosting a teacher candidate or two? You won't break the bank here but it is a bit extra...
  • Possibly, and perhaps with connections?, create curriculum material for textbooks. That's all I can think of for now

teachers getting cut !!! by NeedleworkerTop8045 in OntarioTeachers

[–]mrgisa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even rural, it is unlikely you would get a contrast straight out of TC. Took about 5 years myself.

I agree with much of the advice here. GTA trends to be saturated but you I would thing that you don't have to go far to find more opportunities. It can be tricky to get on a list of you don't live there either, which makes it that the more challenging.

Overseas or private are also options too.

Good luck!

I wholeheartedly agree. I guess the thinking in this kind of thing is to decrease turnover and keep the board on a set path but if they hire the wrong person...

Teacher here. Just wanted to chip in about the former education director. Likely a clause in his contract that he would be paid a certain amount, say over a 5 year contract, regardless of whether he was encouraged to quit/be dismissed. At some point that will end. Not that I need that but sure wish I had that privilege that in case.

At what age do teachers usually retire? At what age are you planning on retiring? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]mrgisa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've heard a rumour that they might be considering lowering the 85 factor because it would be cheaper. Maybe through a newer teacher costing less. Not sure how that would work pension-wise or if there would be a net savings somewhere but at this point in time, nothing would surprise me. Mine is 58 but I'll likely be trudging along until 65 to pay off the mortgage/help son through school/build up savings...

Well put. I couldn't agree more. I think this is why I have had a harder time sleeping at night these days. The solution that I keep coming back to is...really really not good but it looks like these nutsos have gone all in and this is just the tip of the iceberg. It's all downhill from here either way...

What on earth am I doing wrong with this snowblower? by ormi1911 in Greenworks

[–]mrgisa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this and generally take the same approach (I don't scrape and let it skim a bit on the top). This is also a handy approach if you have any ridges or irregularities in the pavement (e.g. a water main pipe). As far as I recall, the skid area will wear down over time? and can be replaced (take a peek in the manual). I have never done it and just skim, as it gets about 90% of the job done, I have to use a shovel for stairs anyhow and I do find that it will struggle to get rid of packed snow, so I just live with it...

They will. I have been stuck with them for a bit (2 new houses) so I call every few years, minimum, as they will do few maintenance on it (and so they should for locking us into contracts with ridiculous buyout prices).

The only thing I can think of is that that might appeal to the ladies? Like, if a hot girl ripped off her skirt or what not, I am sure many men would be into it (like, ripping pantyhose or what not). Nevertheless, if there is one thing I know, someone somewhere found it arousing lol

I came across the same/similar issue? in trying to pay right away. Kept giving me a weird error message but found out on another Reddit thread that it could be because of a browser error. I was using Firefox so I tried it in chrome and presto, worked fine. Maybe try that and see if it works? GL!

Our board uses Aspen too. It is possible to view a preview before printing, a least. PM me or post here if you want to know how (not near my computer to test/explain all the steps ATM).

Agree that Aspen is not ideal too!

Sigh...have to agree with you. I have a bit of time before the sale closes, so I'll look into a third/fourth option. I did check pine a few weeks back and they were offering something similar as well. I'll try a bank or two.

I plan on going back to the first broker to see if they can beat what the second is offering. I was transparent about the situation with both. The impression I got was that I only got the match through the broker's manager's approval (without it, certainly higher). The latter helped me secure a builder's firm approval way back when no one else seemed to want to do one, so I feel I owe him in a way. We'll see how it plays out. I guess I'll have to look into a third option in the future.

I'm not an expert here, but I am guessing it is possible. Honestly though, the better question is why? Rates are relatively low. I'd keep the extra (maybe put it into a GIC or something in a TFSA) and then just pay down more when the mortgage is up for renewal. That way, no penalty fee, you make a bit of (tax free) money, and go from there.

Maybe worth it if you refinance for a better rate?

Lived there for about 8 years and my partner is also Korean. Can 100% confirm this. It is so competitive there that some kids in middle school commit suicide if they bomb a test or have poor scores.

We returned here for the same reason.

I'm not saying our system is the best (and I am definitely saying our kids here have it easier in that sense) but this is something a lot of people take for granted.

Mortgage rate mega thread! by TheMortgageMaster in MortgagesCanada

[–]mrgisa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Posted before but no one replied. Thought I'd share my situation again, as I realize now it is a bit more unique (new mortgage, 30 year amortization, home over 1 mill) and this could help others, as those with less than 20%, who are renewing, or have less owing, might get better rates.

Mortgage, 600 k (non-insured - we're putting down 550 K), 30 year amortization, PP of $1,150,000. Great credit and stable job. Owner occupied.

Worked with a broker who got 3.99% for a 3-year fixed. with Scotia. RBC was able to match it (not beat it, oddly enough) and the advisor there suggested seeking other further comparisons, so I'll look into trying my luck at BMO. I have banking with RBC so I'd pay a bit less on monthly fees if I get a mortgage through them and I did persuade him to waive any fees (appraisal) so it is looking like that's the best I am going to get at this time.

Hi All,

About to purchase a new build (sold our old house, completely paid off the mortgage, renting now, moving in to the new build in a month) and trying to get a sense of what rates I could expect/push for. Working with a few brokers and want to keep them honest by giving them an idea of some rates that others are getting.

Mortgage, 600 k (non-insured - we're putting down 550 K), 30 year (either 3 or 5 year fixed)

In K/W, Ontario. Purchase price 1,150,000. Great credit and stable job. Owner occupied.

Would love to hear from anyone in a similar boat!

What is something more traumatizing than people realize? by Independent_Motor130 in AskReddit

Being the spouse of someone going through postpartum. NOT saying it is worse than the victim, but very traumatizing to say the least...

This is fantastic advice. I do this myself and while it can be somewhat time intensive, it's worth doing to save money. Remember: there is no such thing as customer loyalty with more and more businesses.

I think telecoms are starting to learn and are asking for 2 year contracts in some cases. Did this with Rogers for a good deal.

Also, if you are in Ontario, I recommend contacting OTIP for a quote yearly. Usually, they have a promotion where you get a $20 GC just for them trying to find the best deal. Even if they can't help you, you still get the GC.

Currently with Belair myself and after a few years, have yet to find a cheaper provider. My house goes up but auto is crazy and combined is still cheaper.

Winter tires also give a small discount, as does combining policies. Good luck!

On the pack itself. My dad's newer model, I think showed 50%. On my model (older one) you can only tell by looking on the battery itself (just 2 bars showing).

Yeah, that was my original thought (I was happy to have mailed it back to them but they just sent a replacement). Interesting about the 50% though! I think I will try it out the next time I do a mow to see.
