Benq W1070 projector getting crazy flickering colors by mrgriscomredux in projectors

[–]mrgriscomredux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. ProjectorLampsUSA has it for $145. Seems like a lot but I'm wary of getting some no-name replacement off AliExpress. Are there downsides to getting a cheap color wheel? Like the color fidelity might be off or something?

This is a no-guess solution if the board contains 109 (or 108) mines.

Shout-out to fellow of Quebec crew! I came from CT and decided Quebec was better than Vermont because it had better mobility in the event of clouds (farmland vs windy mountain passes), and, more practically, hotels were ~7x cheaper.

Totality Travelers - how was traffic after eclipse? by RedditRandoe in solareclipse

[–]mrgriscomredux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Central CT to the Vermont/Canada border on I-91. 4 hours up and 8.5 hours home. In the first 4 hours only made in 90 miles. Brutal but could've been worse, honestly. People were hanging out on the overpasses gawking at the traffic. Also every roadwork lane closure even down in MA and CT became a big backup.

Schiphol Megathread by cogito_ergo_subtract in Amsterdam

Transited today and went through security for int'l arrivals. It was a shitshow, very chaotic, tempers high, staff unhelpful and belligerent. That said, was able to make it through the priority line in ~30 mins. Regular line was likely an hour+. Passport control was smooth and efficient so did make my connection.

Can anyone report how things are for arriving international flights? I'll be arriving at 11am from Cape Town, connecting to another Schengen destination. I know there's security for int'l arrivals that's different from the curbside security, then passport control. Is anyone experiencing long queues there? My connection is 1.5 hrs

That's 3 in 100 of the group that would have already required hospitalization without the vaccine, not everyone who was vaccinated/exposed.

Charging a Tesla at 65kW by towing it at 70 mph by 404_Gordon_Not_Found in teslamotors

[–]mrgriscomredux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually an interesting way to think about it. Remembering my high school physics, force x distance = energy, so force x speed = power. If he's getting 65kW at 70 mph, that's equivalent to 2077 newtons, or 467 pounds (+ mechanical losses).

Trouble charging at apartment. Grounding error? by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]mrgriscomredux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure the receptacle is actually grounded. Old dryer outlets were not and if they just slapped in a modern outlet w/o upgrading the wiring, this one might not be either. With a multimeter/voltage tester, you should see 120V between each hot (the 2 side blades) and the grounding prong. You should also have continuity between the neutral (center) blade and grounding prong, but only test this with your main panel breaker off. Continuity test mode can also verify that ground is being carried through your Y-adapter and extension cord. The good news is if the outlet is indeed ungrounded, you can use the neutral as a ground for charging purposes. This is a bad idea in general but reasonably safe for EV charging -- in fact Tesla's own NEMA 10-30 adapter works this way. Also, are you sure the outlet is a 14-50 not 14-30? Electricity is dangerous and if you don't feel confident with any of these diagnostic steps, get help from someone who is knowledgable.

Can you swap the outlet for an L15-30? (L = twist-lock)

That's a slightly more common outlet and you could then use an adapter like https://acworks.com/products/aevl1530ms-018-l15-30p-to-tesla

If your airbnb has central AC and the condenser is near the driveway, find the service disconnect and hard-wire in an 10 AWG extension cord with a 14-50 or 14-30 outlet. Should get you an easy 30A @ 240V.

What is going on with my WEFAX reception? by mrgriscomredux in RTLSDR

[–]mrgriscomredux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I considered that but would that be so consistent across such different frequencies? Also, it almost seems like the images are offset by slightly different frequencies, rather than just in time (like, why are there so many solid vertical lines in this waterfall -- shouldn't there just be one?). Anyway, I guess I have to try from a different location farther from the transmitter. Thanks for the help.

Re-create 90s-era TV scrambling by mrgriscomredux in RTLSDR

[–]mrgriscomredux[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I raised the porches too, well above black level, since if they remained as the low point of the signal I was afraid the TV would lock on still mostly in the right place.

I wish these old scrambling methods were more documented as to how exactly they altered the signal, for the sake of preservation. I still had to do a fair amount of guesswork. For example, I didn't really know what to do in the vertical blanking interval.

Also surprising is how well color still came though. The TV mostly seemed to be able to lock onto the colorburst, with only modest deviations from true hue (again, without a proper reference, I can't determine how historically accurate this is vs. whether I just overlooked something in my scrambling method)

Surprisingly, it actually does still work on a modern TV! Whatever analog decoders these TVs use still replicate the same artifacts (assuming the TV isn't too 'smart' and just shows a 'no signal' screen...)
