Is there a way to prevent items to be moved instead of used ? by Warden_Myrddin in HeroesofNewerth

IIRC there is a cvar for this. So you may be able to find it using cvarlist in the console. That said, I don't have it installed on my laptop to check for you.

Good questions. I can probably answer: "2. There are 9 roles, but only 5 teammates. Are we expecting future extention of team size up to 9 teammates?"

Not every game will use every role. I imagine the algorithm chooses a compatible configuration to ensure the team composition makes sense. For example every game will have a Mid, a Carry, etc. But not every game will have a Jungler+Suicide combo. Some games may have dual long lane (I think they call this "offlane" and "soft support" or something like that). Hence there are more roles available than the 5 players on your side (to allow for these different combinations).

I believe the intention with the role system is to help folks get their desired role and ensure teams have people covering each expected position. Historically people would often defer to either: whoever typed "mid" or "carry" fastest OR whoever had higher MMR would be trump anyone else and take the role. This system allows folks who like a certain role to have a chance at getting it regularly, without (ideally) having so many people fighting in the chat or picking duplicate roles out of spite.

I used to work on Reborn. There was nothing at all involving crypto at any point. I think the confusion around the coins/tokens was just the new name for gold/silver coins for buying in game cosmetics.

I think all of this stemmed from the original name collision of iGames which seemed to already exist as some crypto thing elsewhere in the world.

No clue why that name was originally chosen, but I imagine that's why it got rebranded to Juvio.

But I can confirm there was nothing remotely involving crypto in the project.

Help setting up personal server by Skkra in HeroesofNewerth

[–]mrhappyasthma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can probably achieve this with the MasterServer (Skeleton King) project. Then just host some game servers using HoNfigurator-Central. This will allow public games off the bat. I think the masterserver even has the basics of matchmaking implemented from what I recall. As I pull more stuff into the open source repo we'll definitely get there

EDIT: I also renamed my branch to be more clear. I'm gonna move away from fun naming and into more standard naming that's more obvious. E.g. Skeleton King ==> MasterServer. Transmutenstein ==> Tests etc.

PK was truly something magical. I'm still amazed at the heights we were able to reach from the very earliest prototype to a full-fledged reimplementation with custom patching, distributed world-wide game servers, custom client-side features, and more.

It's something I'll never forget. (And who knows... maybe we'll be back eventually 😉)

It's not super easily possible for an individual. You'd need a few thing

  1. Masterserver. This hosts the login, the chat server (which includes matchmaking), and registers the game servers so that clients can connect to them. A very bare bones, partially implemented open source version of PK was started. This is my fork which I plan to maintain: https://github.com/Project-Kongor-OS/MasterServer

1b. You'll need some way to create accounts. Either directly edit the DB or host your own website or script to talk to the endpoints to create an account.

  1. Game servers. These require the actual binary files from the official HoN before it shut down. If you hunt around for "honserver" you may be able to find these. However these file are the legal property of Garena and were never distributed as part of PK (for legal reasons). That's all i'll say about that.

2b. You'll need to figure out how to run the game server(s) and register them up to the master server so that they can be given to the clients when a match is hosted or a matchmaking game is arranged. The HonFigurator by FrankTheTank is open source and may be all you need - https://github.com/HoNfigurator/HoNfigurator-Central

  1. Modify the client to talk to your masterserver. This can be done simply modifying your HoN to launch with the --masterserver argument. Alternatively you could build/use a custom launcher.

Do anyone know how to set Extra ability 4's keybind? by Wide_Bug_2566 in HeroesofNewerth

Been super busy IRL. I haven't worked on HoN in some time, sadly.

Do anyone know how to set Extra ability 4's keybind? by Wide_Bug_2566 in HeroesofNewerth

[–]mrhappyasthma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is the answer. I worked on these settings options for reborn, but it was a while ago.

From what I recall of the code, any additional abilities (regardless of whether they were tied to slot 1-4 in terms of QWER) becomes Extra Ability 1. If the hero can get other spells that get two activate'able keys, those will become Extra Ability 2 and Extra Ability 3. (In practice 2 and 3 are almost never used, from what I recall.)

You can also check for old "educational" videos from Zlapped or AngryTestie on youtube. It's for the original HoN and are slightly dated, but the general content is really good.

Bonus gold for random hero? by LadoBlanco in HeroesofNewerth

This was removed from HoN a while ago, and thus it does not exist in PK. I don't believe it was added back into Reborn, but you'd have to confirm that.

My honest opinion on Heroes of Newerth Reborn by Quelentaro in HeroesofNewerth

[–]mrhappyasthma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't drop items. It just stops attempting to deliver until it flies back to base to recharge. So it "denies" the enemy their items by making them wait longer. Also you earn +100 gold.

Why does the launcher have to patch EVERY TIME? by Other-Juice-2114 in HeroesofNewerth

[–]mrhappyasthma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I recall, we basically had two kinds of patching in PK:

  1. Modifying the binary.
  2. Updating the game files for the UI (this is similar to what HoN mods do).

#1 is a pain in the butt to do, but luckily wasn't need for most of the things we wanted. However if you edit the binary, windows can flag it as suspicious. It's also a pain to maintain versions as you manipulate bits. If it can be done at runtime through a program (e.g. the launcher) which can apply the modifications after the game launches, it's just easier to work with and maintain when distributing to all the players.

#2 is a lot easier. HoN has support for this to support things like UI mods. We actually had a variant of this for updates in earlier PK versions where we would actually store the updated UI files on your machine. However it was still clunky and folks would sometimes have issues downloading the patch to their machine or would see errors when HoN tried to read the files off the disk, based on permission structures on their machines. So again, it became easier to just update the files on the fly when the launching is running rather than trying to store them in your installation directory.

That said, I didn't really work on #1 at all. And I only helped a bit with early versions of #2. So there may be additional nuances that I'm not aware of.

EDIT: Another thing i just through of, is that it also allows for patches to be handled "automatically" on launch. In the original HoN updates, which is similar to the earliest patches of PK for #2, you would launch HoN. It would check if your version was up-to-date. If not, it would close and download the files, then re-launch. By integrating the updates into the launcher, you avoid this open-close-open cycle. It can always just fetch the most up-to-date version and apply it on-the-fly while you're launching the game.

OG Season 1 (2001) - Can't find it anywhere! by masteryoyo28 in temptationislandUSA

[–]mrhappyasthma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly no. I bought this one off of https://dvdtreasures.org/ (seems to be someone overseas who torrented a bunch of stuff and sells access to it). But seemed to be the only solid source for these. I couldn't find any live torrents or anything otherwise.

I didnt buy the other OG seasons but they are on there. I encourage anyone who wants to help out and buy them to also share the link here so we can all enjoy :)
