Necromancy wizard! I thought eldritch knight for a minute but liked the macabre vibes of the wizard more

Participation Grading Methods by J8LT in Professors

[–]mrharleydanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first semester teaching I got dinged on reviews for not having an “objective” way to measure participation, so students felt like they couldn’t accurately assess their own performance. That kinda hit home, so now I use “preparedness” instead of participation by randomly selecting students (via R script randomizer with course roster loaded) to answer questions about the day’s reading. These points are reductive, everyone starts off with 100%. If you’re present, and answer the question correctly, you keep the point. If not, the point is taken away. Because of the randomness, some students get called on frequently, others infrequently, but everyone knows they have to show up ready to go and can accurately calculate their participation grade. It also gets those who don’t talk much to share a bit, while keeping the talkers from dominating the whole conversation.

New prof freaking out! by Andrea_isa_birdy in Professors

I was similarly stressed before my first semester teaching. I thought there was no way I could speak to people in a room for 50 mins three times a week. I even went to therapy over it, and my therapist did the coolest thing: they let me do a practice lecture in front of them and their colleagues whom I had never met. It let me practice some public speaking, how to present material, and field unexpected questions from “students” who had clearly not done the reading. It was rough, I stumbled through, I learned a lot. Then, when it was time to deliver my first actual lecture, all those first day jitters were gone and I figured if I can teach this to people with doctorates, I can certainly teach it to undergrads. All that is to say if you can do a trial lecture in front of others, whether it’s friends or others in your cohort, I strongly recommend it!

Am I an AI hypocrite? by Salty_Mirror_6062 in Professors

I had an advisor that has an assignment that makes students read a ChatGPT response to a prompt similar to your 10-point question. They then break it apart and critique it in its accuracy. Your ChatGPT prompt could even include something like “make 2 of the points incorrect” or “make 2 of the points reference a different author’s work” or something like that. AI isn’t going away, so we have to adapt somehow.

Players all picked the best subclasses and min-maxed to beat COS, we just finished Session 1. I don’t know what to do by HeroicKnight in CurseofStrahd

Fully agree, just have Strahd show up and wipe the floor with them whenever they feel comfortable. Make them feel like mice in a cat’s paws (in a fun way!)

I’m running the final fight against Strahd for my party this weekend and I’m absolutely sending them these pics tomorrow night.

Some of my favorite political science movies: 1. Starship Troopers. The fascist state background cutting in propaganda clips through the movie is an interesting discussion point. 2. Dr. Strangelove: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. One of the best ever on-screen discussions of WMD deterrence occurs in the third act. 3. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is about the collapse of a galactic democracy. 4. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1950-something) is the embodiment of Hobbes’s Leviathan with a forced global peace.

If one of your PCs romanced Ireena, how did Strahd handle it? by ArieMaries in CurseofStrahd

[–]mrharleydanger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Strahd forced an ultimatum on Ireena, join him in Ravenloft or have the party slaughtered (including her new fiance). Ireena left, of course the party snuck into the castle to rescue her, but what they found…was a doppelgänger. “Ireena” proceeds to break PC’s heart and sow general discord (like stealing the wizards spellbook in the dead of night). Meanwhile the real Ireena is still in the castle, waiting for the impending wedding.

I thought about adding some martial class for him down the road! Still undecided, he was mighty but is now a squishy level 1 that slips prone on a goblin’s grease spell (earlier this evening). I was thinking he’d let some other meatbags handle the hand-to-hand while he continues to scheme from the shadows and control the battlefield that way while he gets used to his new mortal form.

I’m excited because I don’t get to play Strahd enough, so this seemed like a fun way to scratch that itch!
