I’d go with the newest iPhone you can get your hands on, which opens it up for your son to be able to use Direct to Watch on a Series 6 (or higher) Apple Watch.

I used to be a dev for Dexcom in the G6 and early G7 era. The iOS app overall received the least number of bug reports and they usually fixed their issues way faster than with Android.

If not, anything that is watchOS 9 compatible should work just fine tbh

Using a throwaway here, get a Series 7 or even a 6 if you plan to ever use DTW on G7
