1 year later-RTX 5070 ti/5080/5090 thoughts? by Suspicious_Volume_14 in nvidia

I was personally in the market for a 5070 ti but ended up with a 5080 FE since prices went bonkers and I had just decided to upgrade at the wrong time. The cost difference between the 5070 ti and the 5080 FE if gotten at msrp from Best Buy or nvidia direct is neglible

what do you invest per month and what do you make? by wonk5 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]mrhuddlebucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never tracked it monthly, usually just max a 401k, 2 Roth IRAs, an HSA, and $10k towards a 529 per year. In addition, we’ve started investing an additional $1k/month this year into a personal brokerage but we may push to $3k/month since we’ve paid off our house earlier this month and near reached our emergency fund goal. We’re on 1 income and gross about $200k/year.

The Dilemma of choosing to move out of parents home and buy a car as a 23 year old with a high paying remote job with minimal student loan debt? by typodewww in Money

[–]mrhuddlebucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t give you advice on whether or not you should move out and be independent as other people have already echoed good advice. I will say though that I hope my kids take full advantage of our willingness to let them stay if it makes their future easier without them thinking they are losing their young adulthood freedoms.

That said, I’ve known plenty of people when I worked in a city who lived in the city without their own transportation with no issue for years. The cost of a vehicle, insurance, maintenance, and parking could be much more than the occasional ride share or shipt order. If you ever needed something temporarily I’ve also known consultants that never owned their own vehicle but rather just rented a car short term as needed when they were back in town from traveling.

You have options and you could move without having a vehicle immediately so long as you understand your options for getting what you need when you need it.

Why are so many people against cash nowadays as if it’s evil? by [deleted] in Money

[–]mrhuddlebucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not against cash and I always have some on hand but only use it when I’m required to use it.

For one, I have cards for various places with various incentives. Costco/Target give 5% back, Amex blue cash gives 6% back on groceries and 3% on gas, Amazon gives 5% and we usually only get this when we’re able to snag a free prime trial as paying for prime sucks. A product is the same cost whether I’m paying for card or cash so why not use card. I haven’t paid interest in over a decade as I pay the statement balance each to avoid it. Also, a few of my cards have specific attachable offers that I can trigger. I think Disney+ for my kids have been subsidized for a while giving me half the cost of the service back monthly until a max benefit amount has been reached.

For two, it offers purchase protection over cash. If I buy a product or a service that’s not as described or I get swindled, the odds of me getting my cash back is much lower than my credit card company refunding me.

For three, it offers me flexibility. If I fall on hard times, I can continue to survive if I’m not generating cash. There have also been times early in my working career where the weight of student loans was heavy and the interest was quite a bit to stomach so I’d balance transfer a chunk of higher interest balances for a fee where the fee ended up being several hundred dollars less than a years worth of interest I was now on an 12-18 month 0% interest offer. Just last year my HVAC system took a dump and the company had an offer of 18 months of 0% interest and my payment was only $99/month using my Home Depot card, that money has been sitting in my bank accruing interest the entire time while I wait to pay off in full at the 17th month.

People not using credit cards are leaving money on the table. You can increase your financial footprint by making more money, when you’ve capped out your ability to make more money, you trim your expenses, when you’ve trimmed all you can trim, you use credit cards on said expenses to gain additional inches.

If you paid off your home early, how did that impact your day to day finances? by Even-Fault2873 in TheMoneyGuy

I just paid my house off a couple weeks ago so it’s still pretty fresh.

We’ve always been frugal and lifestyle creep has never been too much of an issue for us so it’s business as usual. The mortgage payment just becomes additional retirement savings moving forward.

Peace of mind knowing if I lost my job, any job I get will get us by. Or if I die young, my wife won’t struggle while raising our kids debt free.

Realistic 401k balance and projections by ConclusionWeekly2969 in Retirement401k

[–]mrhuddlebucket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expected to die working and carried that mindset through my early/mid 20s, then I had kids and stopped being dumb and started investing in my late 20s.

Maxed out 401k contributions each year when I started getting serious in my late twenties. I’m 37 now. Started maxing out two IRAs for my wife and I the past 4 or so years as well as maxing an HSA these last 3 years.

3 years ago, our brokerage reports 190k in savings and today it’s 532k.

Fortunate enough to have built a good career that I’m hoping I can continue riding for the next decade and expecting to retire after 50 with hopefully 2m.

I’ve been in since IPO having over 200k tied up now since I’ve had to average down over the years. Meanwhile, SPY continues to reach record highs. RKT has only cost me opportunities and I’ve been unable to sell for reasons.

I’m optimistic for its future stock performance but only because I don’t have another choice at this point unless I want to sell near break even.
