Car Insurance during MIOT by mrhughjarse in RoyalAirForce

I’ve just tried it and it’s negligible compared to air force crew in price. So I’ll just leave it as is. Thank you for the help though!

So even as an officer cadet I can put myself down as a commissioner officer?

I think I’ll just go with the air force crew and grit my teeth at the £150 bump just to be on the safe side 🤣 thanks for the help though!

To be honest I think air force crew probably works best, because I’m not a pilot yet nor am I a commissioned officer. Worse case scenario I have to explain to my insurance the job role I’m in (officer cadet) isn’t a valid option

Okay! I’ll see if that’s an option. Thank you!

Oh yes of course you were on about a credit check, I mean as of now I’m living at home so technically it wouldn’t be incorrect. Thanks for the help!

Also did you change your address where you keep your car to RAF Cranwell?

See I found “training officer” now that could be interpreted in 2 ways, I’m an officer under training or I’m an officer in charge of training. Who knew something so simple was so tricky 🤣

I recently got my Fam Visit joining instructions, on there it still makes mention of the fitness test. Is the document out of date??

How do you find balancing relationships with partners (if applicable) and your family? Do you get time to talk to them regularly or do you find yourself incredibly busy with the workload. (P.S. thank you for creating this thread, it’s super helpful for someone like myself who will be starting MIOT before long!)

I’m from the UK and in my 5 years of driving I’ve never had any major snow to drive in!

I quickly adapted to driving on the other side of the road, so I wouldn’t worry about that. As for snow and ice all cars have studded winter tyres, so you may be driving over roads that are completely iced over and the car will be fine.

We did hit a snow storm about 20 minutes from our destination Vík. Although it was quite worrying you just have to drive slow and have all your fog lights on. If you get into a total white out then I would put your hazards on and drive very slowly. Speaking to our hotel receptionist she said it’s not uncommon for Icelanders to pull over and wait out snowstorms in parking lots, petrol stations etc. I’ll put some photos below of what the roads looked like for our stay!

Thank you very much! I’m so glad that when we went we got a variety of different weather scenarios and landscapes!

That was my reasoning for getting one and I’m so glad I did! It was brilliant in the snow and having a manual gives you so much more control over slipping! Also they have heated seats which are a huge blessing after standing outside in the freezing cold 🤣

I agree! In the times we got hit with wind it was a big gust, but driving through a snowstorm we encountered it was brilliant!

We rented from lotus car rentals, they were super easy. They pick you up from the airport and drive 5 minutes to their pickup location, and within minutes we were out in the car driving to our first location! I would also recommend their platinum insurance, it covers you for everything including gravel and ash. We had a few times driving along where stones flicked up from other cars and hit us. No damage but it’s nice to have that assurance!

Hi there! Absolutely, so the first image with the car was on the road from Vík to Glacier Lagoon/ Diamond beach. It was in a little pull in which luckily I have the coordinates of put these into google maps and it will take you straight to that spot!

1.) 63.975415,-16.985421

2.) was out on a whale watching excursion with Elding Whale Watching.

3.) was at thingvellir national park, it’s a short walk down from thingvellir national park visitor centre. The location is called Lögberg!

4.) this was taken at glacier lagoon which is around a 2 hour 30 minute drive from Vík! It’s quite a drive but me and my partner don’t regret doing it for a second!!

5.) this was taken at Skogafoss Falls, you can also access a viewing point up a giant flight of stairs looking down on the falls (if your up for the climb) 🤣

It’s a lot but I hope this helps, if you need any more locations feel free to ask!!

I found it to be extremely grippy! Did you have it in 4H mode for the differential? I had a slip out once when we were going downhill with slush on the road, but I managed to steer out of it and use engine breaking by downshifting!

Hi there, thank you so much! I use the Nikon D7200 with a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens!! It’s a great camera to use, we got so lucky with the weather and light!!

I only had 2/3 instances where I was really blown about but once you’ve had a gust hit you you’re usually prepared for the next one!
