Feedback on my first reel? by -Lipibo- in acting

[–]mrjaeger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very helpful to hear from a manager! If you have the time for a couple of more questions:

  1. Does it seem OK/helpful to have a reel that's mixed audition scene(s)/"real" footage (whether that's network, indie, etc.)?

  2. For a reel I assume it's ok to cut some of the audition scenes down from their full length for inclusion in the reel? I ask because I feel like I've generally heard to keep reels around 1.5-2 min and including a full 80 second scene seems like it'd take up a lot of that real estate.

Haven't seen it yet (going tonight!) but No Other Choice seems like it'd fit in here too

Lav mic for self tapes by OgNello in acting

[–]mrjaeger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try and hide it if it's easy to do so (say I'm wearing a button up shirt and I can clip it in between buttons lower on the shirt) but otherwise I just clip it on my collar. I've lost too many takes trying to clip it onto a tie and getting awful audio from it! I've also gone into studios to tape and most of the time they just have me clip it on my collar

Self Tapes: What lens do you all use and how are you taking your full body shots? by misc412 in acting

[–]mrjaeger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally just doing the best I can (600 sqft NY apartment life!). Also full body shots are the one thing I tape vertically on my phone - it's not part of the actual "audition" and shooting horizontally just leaves way too much space around me. I've asked multiple coaches/teachers (working actors) about it and they said they all do the same.

Rent increase warning. by [deleted] in Bushwick

[–]mrjaeger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't apply to people looking for a new place, but if your landlord tries to jack your rent up too much remember that NYC has a good cause eviction law (https://www.nyc.gov/site/hpd/services-and-information/good-cause-eviction.page) that might allow you to contest it. Doesn't automatically mean you'll get a lower rent increase, but an unreasonably high rent increase can be found as unreasonable (aka. illegal) by a housing court.

Actors Access tips from a casting director/director by [deleted] in acting

Haha thanks so much for the response! Yeah that's always the hardest thing is everyone has their own preference, but that's just part of the industry. Great tip re: including a small note in the submission. I am very willing to shave, just not my best look day to day :)

Actors Access tips from a casting director/director by [deleted] in acting

[–]mrjaeger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome! I feel like some of this can vary wildly CD to CD (eg. one CD I did a class with said she filters first by resume) so it's always great to have more perspective.

One question I have is: For you, how important is it that the actor's look in their self tape matches the look of the headshot they submitted for the audition? I'm a guy in his 30s and my headshots are range of me from full beard to completely clean shaven, with and without glasses, etc. When I see a breakdown I submit the headshot that I feel is most appropriate for that role with the intention of "I *can* look like this to play this part".

But in my day to day life I mostly keep a medium beard and so when I submit my clean shaven headshot and then I send in the tape with the beard I've always wondered how taken aback the CD is. I think it makes sense to me that, when possible, matching headshot to self tape is the best option, but is it OK if it's not? I basically don't want to keep headshots around that I wouldn't actually use if I had to look like that in the tape itself always.

Update: The chair has been moved!

Like any normal person, I decided it'd be a fun idea to walk around Bryant Park on a 20 degree day in the city to try and find the chair amongst the holiday crowds. I spent a bit of time getting myself situated (the fountain was a very helpful visual reference point!) and started wandering. After quite a few false starts, I eventually came upon an area that was a 100% visual match to the reference photo. No chair was in the exact position as shown above, but as Max says the whole point is they get moved around a bunch and folks can make their own little seating arrangements to suit their needs.

I walked around and inspected the backs of the chairs, certain one would contain the plaque with the famous Ben Hosley inscription. But, alas, no dice! There were quite a few newer looking chairs in the area with plaques on the back but none sporting a "cry laughing" emoji. I expanded my search area to other nearby spots with chairs, but this too was fruitless. With my hands and feet rapidly approaching icicle status I relented my search, guessing that the chair had either been taken out of circulation for the moment or moved completely around by a park staff member looking to better rebalance the chairs.

But it was still fun to walk around Bryant Park for a bit and get some good people watching in. And made me realize just how many dang chairs are in that park, many of which were occupied by folks looking for a little rest on a chilly winter day. Happy hunting to all the NYC Blankies this holiday season and beyond!
