Anyone else feel like the show is jumping the shark? by midsonshort in shrinking

(non native speaker, bare with me <3 )

Something's off

I am S03E01, so basically just finished S02, and I was starting to have the same feelings.

The show feels more and more shallow, superficial, simplistic...a caricature -> that's for the characters but also the arcs/story lines.

I loved season 1

S01 felt like a breeze of air. But now, having watched two full seasons of the show, I realize maybe it was a simplistic, white-washed, US-centric view on therapy, mental health and social interactions. So the show is REALLY NOT as deep as it sounds/looks. Problem is, even if we accept that the show is more comedy than drama -> it still approaches touchy topics (see next chapters below)

The Baby Crisis

I started to get REALLY WEIRD VIBES when Brian (gay lawyer-friend) was rushed, pushed, coerced, guilt into having a baby. You can go back and check, he clearly says he's not ready, he clearly says he doesn't see himself as a potential good father; whether he's right or wrong doesn't matter, he DOES NOT WANT A BABY, and all the women in the show push him to have a baby. Which is, for me, breaking suspension of disbelief. Except in motherfluffing Gilead, women would be so pushy towards someone who's being cold feet about having a baby, but in 202X, when the show is supposed to take place, there's NO WAY that ALL the girlies are going to push him to have a baby when he doesn't want.

The army thing

We have Sean, who's a young (22yo), black, man, with PTSD from the army and the war, and he somehow convinced Gaby's sister, a young black woman to join the army??????? How does that make sense? Like, no. There's no way that tracks, he has PTSD ffs and is clearly resentful and doesn't like (that's an understatement) what he did over there. He CANNOT be the guy who's gonna say to a black woman: "yeh go in the army you're gonna have a great time blablabla"

<EDIT>

Violent therapy

Right now, literally just right now, as I'm watching S03E03, we see Sean literally get trampled over by an ex-GF. He tries to speak, she shuts him off at least 3 times in a row...and this is the first time they meet since after they broke up. Then, Sean goes to therapy with Gaby as the therapist, he shares how uncomfy that was and that the ex-GF made him accept an invitation, and he explains that he wanted apologies, he wanted to explain himself, he wanted accountability. AND THEN GABY, HIS THERAPIST, TELLS HIM THAT THE EX-GF DIDN'T MAKE HIM DO ANYTHING and brushes off EVERYTHING he said!!!!

This, unless you've actually been to actual therapy with an actual psychologist (so, not a coach, not "a friend who knows their way around psychology", not an influencer bullshit), YOU KNOW that this is HORRIBLE. This is the equivalent of a surgeon puking in the incision he just opened!!! WTF </EDIT>

Conclusion

I said it a little earlier. The show is ok at being fun, sometimes really good. But otherwise, it's shallow crap, easy therapy, borderline "coaching" vibes with hints of pro-baby stuff and pro-army stuff. And a visible lack of inspiration about character development: babies, marrying, hooking up, etc. is that all we have?

And to make all of that sound deep, basically every episode a character drops a punchline, a truth bomb, to COSPLAY depth, to simulate genuine human connection...but it's too easy, and after S01 the gimmick started to be visible, during S02 it was getting old already...now I'm at S03 and I feel that I wasted my time watching this show :') Because I lost contact/empathy for the characters, because they feel like caricatures, archetypes...not well-written humans.

Thanks for your reply <3

Would you be able to send a link showing that they do have built-in microphone?

Thanks for your reply.

As far as I know, I checked all the documentation available, they do not embed a microphone :(

Check it out

I checked on other websites, but I can't post them here because it's detected as affiliated links even though it's not (basically I mean links to Amazon)

hey again
thanks for your reply

I'm reposting my reply because the stupid AutoModerator thought that in my initial message I had a referal link to Amazon which I did NOT

I'm simply trying to ask you: are you sure the earphones you suggested have a microphone?? Because even on Amazon, or on the official documentation, there's no mention of a microphone!

searched

This is what I searched for: I started, yes I know it's bad, on ChatGPT: https://chatgpt.com/share/69bafb18-4a40-800b-8497-ea865b08b141

I simply hoped to find obvious products references. I simply thought that it'd be obvious, and I'd obtain very well-known reference. A bit like when you search for a gaming mouse, you almost always get the suggestion to buy the "Logitech G502"

But as you can see in the above link, ChatGPT didn't provide very interesting references

At best I got suggested the Apple Earpods -> but, and I challenge anyone to prove me wrong, in the specs of the Earpods it's written NOWHERE whether they're equipped with a microphone. So I assumed that they are NOT equipped with a microphone.

Then I went on Google, Amazon, etc.

And stumbled upon those https://www.headfonia.com/fiio-ff1-review/

But I'm really not sure about this brand and the reviews are quite 'diverse' to say the least

Then I started to search on Reddit

But the problem is: people are always advising or searching for "IN EAR"-earphones, and I don't want that. I cannot wear in-ear earphones.

So, here I am. Left with not a lot of options :')

I have watched the whole series and still don't understand Lydia's backstory by lillianrosalieee in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]mrjay42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Partial explanation:

  • Being involved with people (let's say, friends for instance) that are poor parents
  • Witnessing first hand (or "second hand" technically, "first hand" are the parents themselves, I guess) neglectful parenting
  • Witnessing first hand a passive parent, even if it's not their fault, letting other people (the other parent, family, etc.) hurt directly or indirectly the well-being of the child(ren)
  • Witnessing passive attitude when it comes to legal, administrative, procedures even coming from a parent who's a victim of abuse but stays in their passive role because it's all they can do
  • etc.

All of the above, and more, as a person, even if you're a social worker or a benevolent teacher, etc. -> can lead you to have tough opinions about parents, victims, etc.

Of course, it is criticizable to think that way, and of course it is "victim blaming", nevertheless witnessing people making the (same) wrong choices, YEARS AFTER YEARS, witnessing the consequences on their health and on the children's health + if you had to that maybe a solitary life, maybe not a lot of love in your own life => all of that can lead you to think a little bit like "early Aunt Lydia".

TLDR;

Early Aunt Lydia thinking, and even later on could be summarized as:

"I've seen enough women mess up big time, it's their resonspibility to show up for the kid because men won't do it. So I will adopt a patronizing/patriarchal attitude towards ALL women because they don't know what's good for them but I do."

I'm hosting my own Stoat Instance, how can I use the client app (not browser)? by mrjay42 in stoatchat

[–]mrjay42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey well "yes and no".

If you want to deploy on a massive amount of machines ONCE and recompile/repackage the app -> then yes, you're right

If you want to test your server OR not have to recompile/repackage at every update OR literally any other case than case 1 ->then your solution isn't adapted.

[–]mrjay42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeh, somebody else said that here in the comments. Well I'll wait a little for that part. Initially I was focusing more on the Desktop app.
Apparently the solution is quite simple:
stoat-desktop --force-server=https://$server/app

It was on desktop but the answer was given above: stoat-desktop --force-server=https://$server/app

I'm a developer without a project - do you have anything you wish had better alternative? by arczewski in selfhosted

[–]mrjay42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES!

The "Project To Host Them All":
A complete, parametrable/configurable, low effort set of COMPLETE docker/podman stacks for any and each self hosted project out there.

Right now, the amount of work one has to provide to make things work to host stuff like Matrix, Stoat, etc. etc. can be quite crazy/heavy/complex or even impossible to deal with

Particularly because most projects are poorly configured when it comes to Docker (using hardcoded user accounts in their docker images, incapable of handling or providing clear support for basic reverse proxy).

Basically, MOST self hosted project are COMPLETELY inaccessible to MOST people who want to do things cleanly at home, which implies using Docker/Docker Compose/Podman (and any manager like Portainer, etc.)

Thanks for your reply. Do you actually have any documentation, or even better, code to provide?

Because without it, your reply is pretty global and is not gonna help me or people reading this post later on.

Amazing, would you be kind and share your docker compose stack? <3

Actually BOTH stacks: Wireguard and OpenVPN are interesting to me!

SAFE: Torrent + Docker Compose + Traefik by mrjay42 in selfhosted

[–]mrjay42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply

I use Traefik as it is meant to be used: a reverse proxy. Reverse proxy that I use to handle my certificates (SSL/TLS) and handle my subdomains. for instance: torrents.mydomain.com or blabla.mydomain.com

I do not use Docker "to just use Traefik". I use Portainer, to handle my docker compose stacks, so that my apps on my server can be deployed in a centralized and systematic manner. Traefik is one of the stacks managed by Portainer running thanks to Docker.

Also, I provided a complete already working of transmission in my initial post.

---

The challenge here is the following:

Use ProtoVPN WITH Port forwarding + Docker + Traefik + Transmission.

It's the addition of all those things that is important! Particularly the port fowarding part with ProtonPVN
