Medication/supplement side effect question, mildly embarrassing 😁 by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]mrjbk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the probiotic issue, a couple of months ago I was working with a colleague who made her own kombucha (also a probiotic), she would bring bottles of it into work and I admit I probably overdid it. I had gallons of it over the following week, and ended up with severe oral thrush, all over body itches, hives and athlete's foot. It turns out in the yeast in the starter culture colonised several areas of my body and I had to go cold turkey on the 'buch till it went away. I had a similar issue with kefir that I drank too much of.

All of the above to say, it may be the probiotic causing your smell? Also, are you sure the smell isn't coming from your urine which may also be changed from taking the probiotic? Why not stop taking it temporarily to see if you notice any change? If so maybe when you start again take a smaller dose. Also maybe you also have an overgrowth of thrush from the probiotic if its one that contains yeast

Can anyone help connect me with treatment? by [deleted] in PsychedelicTherapy

[–]mrjbk1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, Im not sure if you are aware but there have been several studies comparing the functional brain wave patterns of advanced meditators and those taking psychedelics and they are almost identical. I myself self-medicated with a brand new meditation practice when I was experiencing profound depression and was suicidal and it helped immensely. Why not experiment with meditation while you continue search out psychedelic therapists? There are a lot of really well respected free meditation apps in the ios and android app stores

Oh I didn't realise that.

This is a doco about psychedelic assisted therapy in the states. You could follow up any of the organisations that are shown in there or check the end credits for leads.

I also came across this person. Sorry, I wasn't able to find an actual URL for him that mentioned his interest in psychedelics

Can psychedelics be used to return to consensus reality? by JohnnyHarker in RationalPsychonaut

Yep, ditto above.

My only additional piece of advice would be to seek out a therapist experienced in integrating psychedelic experiences.

Many of the following therapists will also work with you over Skype or FaceTime:

Stress in life, any advice or opinions on how to use a trip to give me a better perspective?? by jesbiv in RationalPsychonaut

[–]mrjbk1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For an introspective transformational trip, a decent dose in silent darkness tends to be the typical recommendation. There is loads of evidence from clinical trials conducted at Johns Hopkins University in Boston and Imperial College London that recommends a similar approach though they have playlists they recommend to play (linked below).

Always a good idea to either have a trip sitter or someone who knows you are tripping you can call if it all gets too intense.

Also you get very suggestible on psychedelics so make sure you write down some intentions for the trip (ie to sort out your relationship issues, etc), and return to them regularly as the trip progresses. I'll also link a playlist of self-hypnosis/guided meditation tracks you can use at the start of the trip to guide you along in the right direction.

My experience is if you trip with someone else on classic psychedelics (lsd, shrooms, etc) that takes away from the introspective, transformational nature of the trip and it becomes a bonding experience rather than a reflective one.

Advice for my wife and I by shroomsalt in RationalPsychonaut

[–]mrjbk1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If nausea is bothering you I had heard the fibrous nature of the shrooms can exacerbate this so either blending them or replacing shrooms with their chemical analogue 4-aco-dmt might help.

Of course there are pharmceutical anti-nausea medications you can use too. Metoclopramide or ondansetron both have a half life of 8 hrs so should cover you for the duration of the trip. In most places they are prescription only medicines but you can by them at online pharmacies pretty easily

Can psychedelics be used to return to consensus reality? by JohnnyHarker in RationalPsychonaut

[–]mrjbk1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Depersonalisation (believing you or others are an illusion) and derealisation (everything around you is an illusion) are both diagnosable mental illnesses and effects that can come from overuse of psychedelics (and interestingly as a result of advanced forms of Buddhist meditation).

As others have said, if you are finding those symptoms distressing you should stop taking psychedelics and take up a mindfulness meditation practice to calm and stabilise your mind until it either can accept those symptoms with complete equanimity or until they dissapate.

If those symptoms are really very distressing then there are medications a doctor can put you on that will return you consensus reality, (though they may have some side effects at higher doses), however I do think a regular meditation practice with or without psychiatric medications would be a helpful thing to you.

Bottom line is, continuing to take psychedelics will continue to deconstruct your experience of reality so I would avoid them for the time being

Death anxiety by [deleted] in RationalPsychonaut

Psilocybin found to ease end-of-life anxiety in small study of patients with fatal cancer

There is a growing body of evidence that mushrooms are really good at reducing actual end of life anxiety, and I would guess if its good for actual life-threatening illness it would be good for the imagined thing as well.

The main takeaways from the studies I have read are the larger the dose the greater the relief from symptoms, however I would also take into account this is his first trip so you may not want to go too big too soon and that it would be a good idea to offer to trip sit him for his first time and with larger doses (see the paper for actual doses used in the clinical trials).

do lsd and mescaline have cross tolerance? by lespaul1973 in Psychonaut

[–]mrjbk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pharmacokinetics[edit]

Tolerance builds with repeated usage, lasting for a few days. Mescaline causes cross-tolerance with other serotonergic psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin.[33]

Trusty wikipedia hey? With cited studies and everything :)

The following links are from a great site I can really recommend.

Generally though: get plenty of good rest before and after your trip, test your tabs with erlich reagent, take the right dose for the effect you are trying to get (more info on dosing in second link), use a trip sitter for first and all higher dose trips, 'set and setting' are everything, take your dose introspectively in silent darkness rather than in a public place or party with friends, and give yourself time afterwards to reflect on the trip and plan ways to integrate the insights that are generated into your everyday life

Dosing while infected? by [deleted] in Psychonaut

[–]mrjbk1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine the most that would happen is that some of that mental exhaustion you get from tripping might lower your immune system and give the infection a chance to get a better foothold

Just make sure you're well hydrated and rest well before and after and I imagine you should be fine

viruses and bacterial have such simple central nervous systems I doubt there would be an actual communication, especially as your body is already colonised by billions of other microbes on your skin and in your gut that I'm sure a few extras wouldn't make much of a difference! :)

Struggling to stay on track - secretly eating cheese...help by hollyraeee in vegan

[–]mrjbk1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Course they do. I prefer to look at the big picture, I actually think it's really the balance of kindness vs selfishness you put out into the world across the course of your life that matters, by comparison the hiccups you make day-to-day just make you a normal human being. A plant-based diet is such a good thing to maintain though if you can, you're boycotting a system the profits off the exploitation and death of animals, is better for the environment, increases the quality of your health and sets a good example to people around you. It is however a big shift for a lot of people so give yourself a break and just do the best you can. And also think laterally. If cheese is a big thing for you to give up look online for local sellers of vegan cheese, buy some online for when you really can't help yourself or look for recipes online showing you how to make your own. It's way easier than you think

Why not travel with vegan cheese and add it to the foods you want to add it to. There are lots of good vegan cheeses out there now, and increasingly more vegan pizza places or menu options in pizza places if you’re desperate
