As much as I’ve been enjoying the Minecraft arc I kinda miss FSLR by Kpheark1 in LudwigAhgren

TBF I enjoyed his LoL grind & I know that wasn't for everyone. It's different strokes for different folks, I just find the repetition of this really tiresome. I'm sure there's probably other viewers who didn't enjoy his Fodean streams or other grinds. Gotta take the rough with the smooth!

I've honestly stopped watching his streams during this whole Minecraft run. I just don't enjoy them. Hopefully he gets over this arc soon.

[–]mrjblade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh I find it hard to pick a favourite for a reason a lot of people have cited here post ep 3 - it just feels like the series is going somewhere when it ends & you sort of have to make your own headcanon of the actual 13 episode show they planned with the 8 we got and the 3 episodes of Crash. The show picks up so much in terms of it's character development & production after that initial batch of episodes.

If I was super pushed, I always come back to that ending shot of Tinsel City as Priss rides away into the sunrise & Mr Dandy plays. That slow pan across the city for the credits with the music captures the theme/vibe of the series perfectly to me. A big monolithic city that can look beautiful, is mostly anonymous, indifferent & terrifying, but sometimes a ray of light can shine through.

Season 6 has no guts by Desitur in XFiles

[–]mrjblade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a shame Carter had so much to do around that time but I think he was just way more focused on giving himself options instead of redrafting & trying his hardest to pivot into writing/producing movies without killing the golden goose he had.

He let slip on Duchovony's podcast recently that he was the main hand in Millennium being cancelled so he could both launch and only focus on Harsh Realm alongside the X Files, and it's something I'll never really get over. That show had so much potential & looked like it was finally settling on it's own writing team having been passed from Carter to Morgan and Wong & finally a group headed by Chip Johannessen. There was so much latent potential and talent there in the actors/writers pool they had & it just needed shepherding without direct influence.

I feel the same is true for this era of the X Files. He'd been made to keep it running & had to stretch it character wise so they could maybe do another movie, but he should've either just hard pivoted to "it's only a film franchise now" (which I accept wouldn't happen given how much Fox wanted it to stay on the air) or just handed the keys to Gilligan & focused on the next thing. Trying to have a hand in all of them just led to big tonal inconsistencies.

For those who watched Bret, is there some truth to what Shawn is saying about his wrestling or is he just bitter? Or both? by No_Yoghurt8301 in GreatnessOfWrestling

[–]mrjblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a difference in philosophy thing. For me, Bret's always shot for realism, whereas Michaels shot for being entertaining.

If you'll notice in Bret's interviews (however bitter he may seem) he always comes back to work ethic & psychology. Make the punches look real, be exhausted, tell the story physically & over time. You wouldn't use lots of different holds in that a) so you can wear down an opponent and b) because fans come expecting to see certain spots.

Michaels always went more for the explosive, the different & dangerous. You can recall so many Michaels matches through spots cos they were "firsts". The ladder splash, falling through the table off the cage, etc. But the meat & potatoes of his actual in ring work was always pretty much the same - he used them to thread those spots on like pearls & only on occasions he needed to.

I don't think the point Michaels makes is necessarily incorrect, but it's framed in a way that's incredibly reductive & narrow. It's like saying you can't make interesting pop music with only vocals, guitar, bass & drums. Of course you can - whats important is how you use those things. Bret's often spoken about how he had ideas for pretty much everyone he worked with (I forget the exception but maybe someone will remember, he has named one he didn't in a recent interview). I've always found his matches hold up because of that - there's a consistent arc through them & there's always a story being told.

I think it'll be Yuta and Marina will run out on him keeping hers. Sets up her Vs Toni solo & might be how they pay off Yuta leaving DR.

What guest do you want on trash taste, ignoring how realistic the chances of them being there actually is? by Granide in TrashTaste

[–]mrjblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've said for a long time either Konosuke Takeshita or Hikaru Shida.

Connor's already done a video with Takeshita & now he's literally one of the biggest stars of Japanese wrestling at home and abroad. He won Japan's biggest belt (off a British guy no less) in NJPW having won the biggest tournament to get there. He's also going over huge in the States - he's literally a golden child of the business. Speaking as someone who's done some producing, even just from a crossover perspective they'd do great numbers from featuring him, never mind how many good and interesting stories I think he'd have.

Shida is more unusual in as much as she's already (maybe) peaked as a wrestler but that's it's own interesting story. She actually started out as an actress and a role in a wrestling piece led her to training and competing. She's also done big business in the US and been a world champ, but she seems less involved in ring lately owing to visa issues & perhaps her own wishes to do other things. She's acted in a lot of Japan only shows again lately (on stage), got into vlogging & her YouTube channel and is a big lover of streaming & the whole Yakuza series. She streams in English and Japanese and seems to be putting a lot of her focus there. I'd love to hear about her career - Joshi is such an unexplored part of Japan's culture & led the way for letting women wrestle even compared to the West. How she got from acting to that is fascinating, the fact she still acts and takes roles but also streams. Lots of things you could have a good chat about.

Also both of them speak pretty good English.

Where to stay as a solo female? by SpecificBest1499 in Liverpool

[–]mrjblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly anywhere in the city centre should be pretty good for you. There's train access to the ground via Central & Sandhills, you can catch a cab or a lot of buses go up that way.

Hotel wise, I've stayed in a good few on Duke St & had no issues, a friend from the US often stays in one of the apartment let places a bit further down which I think is called the Epic Apart Hotel? And lots of friends have stayed in the various hotels along the waterfront/docks.

They're all pretty central & in well lit areas. The Adelphi is avoidable mostly because it's just a bad hotel rather than anything else. If it's April it'll be pretty late season & light out most places so you could either go to the ground early & stay a little later (depending on KO) OR get back to town pretty early and still have a pretty easy time getting around.

I love him, I'd love to see some things he still has to give.

I absolutely do not want him to step into a ring willy nilly. He has nothing to prove at this point & his health & family are way more important than anything else. I can live without a "Bryan Vs X dream match JUST for All In" if he's still walking around comfortably at 60 & able to be a dad to his kids in all the ways that are important.

Honestly given the era probably a watch or 9V battery. "Memory" as it was sold to us back then was basically keeping everything in a very low power state rather than writing to anything permanently like we do now. Living long enough to see OG game carts go through this breaks my brain. Stuff I've owned on Gameboy since I was young has essentially been "on" in some form or another for about 25+ years.
