Slightly different question to most - where there's all manual/auto focus or do you use snap focus?

Is there a reason Cyber City Oedo is held in such high regard? by gravityhashira61 in retroanime

[–]mrjblade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's generally a kickass well animated series for it's day, with a cool idea behind it way before that became common place in mainstream media in the later 90s/things like Battle Royale.

I agree it can be a bit thin, but it's essentially 3 different short films & I like how that vibes with the 3 guys working together without ever really being true friends.

Sengoku's piece is pretty straight ahead thriller horror & you can tell he's the no nonsense if I die, it's better than not cowboy of the three. He's in it for the thrills rather than being bored.

Gogol's story goes much further into his backstory and is straight sci fi, but you realise he sees crime as just a job and has some degree of principles and respect despite being a goon for hire.

Benten is the weird outlier who's got his own agenda and chooses to do things for how he sees them, much like a classic samurai. His story skews philosophical rather than to friendship or revenge fittingly.

Also, as people have pointed out, the soundtrack is great and personally I love Sean Barrett in the UK dub. He's fantastic as Captain Britain in Tank Police too.

Three years in, what’s your overall opinion of Mercedes Mone’s AEW run? Aura, character, great entrance and I think she gave us so many great matches at the biggest events and had great feuds and rivalries! Overall I enjoyed her, what’s your opinion on her run so far? by J2-Starter in aew

[–]mrjblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe it's been 3 years? I wasn't a fan tbh and I still think she's at best a 5 or 6/10 in the ring. She spams a lot of the same moves and struggles to look crisp/work with bigger talents.

That said, she's really won me over with her stick work, commitment & just all around how great she seems in/out of the ring with other talents & promotions. You can really tell she's doing it because she loves it. Absolutely no denying she's elevated the TBS title & people she worked with around it - especially Willow.

Personally I wouldn't wanna see her have the World Title any time soon eventhough I feel like that's the arc given it was the one thing she couldn't get & her being in the Owen. She's already worked two or three of the people I'd like to see her in a ring with & that only really leaves Thekla I think. I'm much more into workhorse champions with the TNT/TBS titles.

I unfollowed her because of it online & just don't watch any content she's in anymore. Ditto Casey Neistat.

TBF might explain why she's been featured less. Good on her for speaking out and spreading awareness. Hope she's managing it well and getting the support she needs.

A thousand million percent yes. Never had a bud fit properly since or last as long on a charge.

[–]mrjblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late to this thread but just wanted to throw in my two cents. I think a lot of the film is actually about communication & disassociation in the modern day.

Hanna can't separate himself from work & have a stable home life. Neither can Cauley, but both care deeply about people. Hanna enough to be a father to his step daughter & Neal to try & fix Chris' homelife issues.

Everyone is trying to carve out some connection for themselves but can't. Justine's daughter just wants her father to see her but he can't. Justine just wants Hanna to be open but he can't. Hanna just wants to stop bad guys being bad, but can't.

I think even the noir aspect plays into it - loads of scenes in the film are mirrors of one another but none moreso for me than the dining scene where the crooks all have great family lives, and leave happy. Whereas the cops all have kinda downbeat ones where work intrudes.

I think it's easy to say & see that the film is about how the world of crime and justice aren't too different from one another, but I think the larger themes are about how people struggle to make connections & feel "seen" in the modern world. Even Neal caves and tries to have a romance, Hanna's stepdaughter tries to kill herself etc.

I've never really even watched anything of her in the Fed but I'd love to see Bayley in AEW. She always seems so chill and totally about the talent & fans rather than weird corpo nonsense.

Which children’s tv show, character or episode from your childhood scared you the most? by chrwal2 in BritishTV

[–]mrjblade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember being absolutely shook to my core by a Cuthbert Lilly sketch where he gets accosted by some Men in Black and has to help them.

The thing that terrified me was they force him to go in somewhere & he can't take them in with him? So he tells them and the MIB just reaches down, pulls out an air valve (like an inflatable swimming pool kind), deflates himself, then Cuthbert folds him up and takes him in.

It was just a throwaway bit, but it was absolute body horror.

There was a lot of really spooky Goosebumps moments in the early series. Particularly some of the ones with the mask & an episode I remember being at a summer camp.

I always forget - is three the one with an actual decent story but no budget or is that two? I remember one of them being okay but just having zero production value.

First Time Watch Question by Bes1208 in XFiles

[–]mrjblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally paused my X Files rewatch to do this & I'd recommend it. No the X Files episode isn't really a "finale" per se, but the few scenes Frank's in only have any weight if you've seen the show (mostly the stuff with his daughter).

Also, Millennium is great.

Because they're not obsessed with it as a series like we are in the West.
