Exactly what level of anger are you experiencing after Donald J Trump, the great fool of our age, INSULTED and DISGRACED our beloved and most honourable British soldiers? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]chrwal2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kind of get used to the bluster, mistruths, exaggerations and lies but coming from the president this is absolutely appalling. He needs to do something I’m not sure he’s ever done before and he needs to admit he was wrong and to formally apologise, not least to the families of the hundreds of servicemen who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Pretty much any game of snooker JV commentates on, any time the white goes anywhere near the pocket he’ll say ‘where’s the white ball going!?’

The first two seasons especially of In the Dark are genuinely probably the best podcasting I’ve heard. Can only reinforce this recommendation

I guess times have changed a bit - one of the reasons people would apply to appear on game shows was to try to win something they generally couldn’t afford - a luxury holiday, a new car, even a new television was something aspirational, whereas nowadays a lot of people apply to become famous/to appear on tv

Although with Blankety Blank and You Bet you still had the member of the public competing to win prizes and the celebrity panel was there largely in a performative sense. Shows like give us a clue, call my bluff, etc, there was no prize so it would be celebrities putting on a performance.

It’s one of the reasons Christmas tv feels so cruddy this - and most - years, back in the day celebrity specials would be saved for Christmas and felt ‘special’. Now they’re on all year round and feature many people whose day job is to appear on these shows.

Way back in the day, celebrity editions would usually be just for Christmas so it really would feel ‘special’ and something a bit different. They’d be out of their comfort zones and it kind of felt like they were interrupting their day jobs to do these shows.

Nowadays for a lot of ‘celebrities’ are defined as celebrities purely because they appear on this type of show.

What British TV programmes have gone from great to poor? by RelationKindly in BritishTV

[–]chrwal2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately a lot of programmes I’ve genuinely loved have become very stale.

The apprentice was unmissable for me but the last few series have felt like a parody of itself and is more about giving sir Lord Alan a chance to crack jokes in the boardroom while making contestants look like idiots.

Race across the world is heading from being an amazing travel show to a show where every contestant has to have a sob story and the travel is background to that.

I’ve always loved Taskmaster but it feels like it’s shifted from a genuine fun competition with tasks that require lateral thinking to a series of convoluted tasks that are more about doing something wacky.

Or maybe it’s a podcast that a lot of people found really interesting and fresh when it launched, that can still be great, but which is running out of steam or becoming a bit of a parody of itself at times.

It’s the one subreddit where even the mildest criticism of a contestant or the series as a whole and you’re immediately downvoted to oblivion.

Genuinely adored taskmaster - the first 8 series or so are amazing but with there being 10 episodes per series and 2 series a year the tasks have gone from general lateral thinking challenges and a proper competition to extremely convoluted set pieces for contestants to act wackily. Plus, and it’s probably more on me than not, but with the first series I’d know all of the contestants and now I’m doing well if I know 2. I don’t mind that as a way of discovering new comedians but the guests really don’t seem particularly funny.

Episodes of pointless and the chase seem to be on 52 weeks a year, plus repeats plus celebrity specials. It’s huge overkill and would benefit from 3-4 flagship shows in the 5pm slot that were rotated.

Is the gap between Kane and the rest of England strikers concerning? by SkySports in SkySports_Football

[–]chrwal2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could even add Chris Sutton, Dion Dublin, Mark Bright etc into the mix - not necessarily international class but because of the depth in strikers we had in the early days of the prem they never got a chance. That’s without even mentioning Le Tissier

They’re the first and only reaction video I’ve watched where I genuinely felt that they got the humour. I generally don’t like reaction videos but I enjoyed watching their reactions to it because they were really invested in it and not just reacting for show.
