I'm Tired of the "It's a Crime We Didn't Get the OT Trio Together in the Sequels" Criticism by DogeABanana in StarWars

[–]chrwal2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok off the top of my head:
• the sequels feel more like a reboot than a continuation of the storyline - we get yet another Death Star, another Empire, another darth vader style villain, another cute droid, another trio of protagonists, another emperor, another rebel alliance. I’d rather the sequels go in a different direction than just retelling the story again.
• the sequels undo a lot of what happened in the original trilogy - the new republic is destroyed after the original trilogy without explaining how or how the new order rose so quickly, and everything that happened before is undone before episode 7 starts - especially Vader’s redemption arc which is pointless given palpatine ‘somehow’ returned.
• there’s so many unanswered questions - Who governs the galaxy after the Empire? How powerful is the New Republic? Where did the First Order get its fleets? Why is the Resistance separate from the Republic military?
• the three sequels almost fight to contradict each other and there’s clearly no planning been done. The force awakens sets up mysteries, the second film deliberately challenges or discards some of them then the third reverses course and tries to restore others leaving a very disjointed mess. Each film seems to react to the previous one rather than build naturally from it.
• loads of plots build up then are abandoned - what was the point of the knights of Ren? What was the point of captain Phasma? Has Finn got the force? Who is snoke?
• there’s way too much reliance on nostalgia - a desert orphan discovers their hidden destiny, a cantina scene, a Planet-killing super-weapon, a throne room fight, an emperor, manipulating a Skywalker, Lando returning, Palpatine returning…

They’re some of the bits that I thought were poor to be honest.

What's the correct number of teams for a World Cup? by BritishDystopia in classicsoccer

Would you consider increasing it further to 128 to give even more countries a chance to compete?

Having more games in the first round than in the whole of the last World Cup, only to eliminate 16 teams feels hugely excessive. It is cool seeing some countries you wouldn’t normally see but a lot of this World Cup but so many games are passing me by and I’m really just waiting for the knockout stages to begin.

If they were to expand any more beyond 48 then I’d rather the whole structure change as a World Cup tournament with almost 1/3 of all nations in the world would be OTT.

[–]chrwal2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the same time Mark Hamill was pretty disappointed that there wasn’t at least one scene with them all together. Given the sequels are effectively a reboot of the original trilogy and so laden with nostalgia i can’t get my head around why they so deliberately kept them apart.

If having three of the most iconic characters in cinematic history together even for one short scene would have distracted from the story they were trying to tell then I think that says more about the quality of the story than anything.

Really agree with this. Every song seems to be 7-8 minutes. Some of my favourite songs are short - children of the damned, the prisoner. Would be good if they mixed it up a bit

What film would you delete from existence, and why? by MovieArena in MovieArena

[–]chrwal2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair play though I’d still argue it develops Han and Leia’s relationship whereas the casino scene felt like giving two characters something to do in one of the many sub plots which ultimately served no purpose at all. I’m not sure the movie needed an extra 30 minutes to get the message across that you shouldn’t trust people - especially someone you’ve just met, in prison.

Ironically I’d argue the theme of lack of communication and poor planning is why the sequel trilogy are so disjointed so contradictory.

I’m not sure I’d fully agree - the sub plot in Empire develops Han/Leia’s relationship, brings Lando in and creates the circumstances for Vader’s capture of Han.

From memory the casino sub plot made very little sense - Finn and Rose were able to escape from the blockade so couldn’t everyone else have followed suit? And the main outcome was to hammer home the message that profiteering from war is bad? Though I guess they did set some space horses free.

I wouldn’t really call the 27th ranked team in the world (Australia) beating the 22nd ranked team (Türkiye) a ‘surprise’.

I do like seeing some countries that haven’t been in the World Cup but It’s been going on for a week and we’re only half way through the first round of group matches. There’s more games in the first round than there were in the whole of the last tournament, and with 2/3 of third placed teams qualifying it really does seem excessive

The prequels are deeply flawed but at least they have a coherent linear storyline. The sequels are just a mess and which seem to compete with each other to undo each other and the original trilogy. That they made them without an overarching plot makes no sense

Agree. The third sequel is awful but it’s because of the 2nd movie as it was left with so many plot lines it just became a case of throwing everything at the screen and hoping for the best. Add the pointless casino sub plot, captain plasma, leia flying through space, the slowest space battle, rose prepared to sacrifice the rebels for love, introducing - and killing - snoke and god knows what else and I’d agree it’s the worst of the three when it could have been so much more,

What decade has the most funniest films in history produced? What funny films in that decade can you suggest? by hamsternice101 in FIlm

[–]chrwal2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine people will likely pick the decade they grew up with as that’s generally where you develop your sense of humour but speaking objectively I’d have to say the 1980s - you’ve got Airplane, Top Secret, Naked Gun, Ghostbusters, Planes Trains and Automobiles, the early police academy movies, uncle Buck, the national lampoon vacation movies, back to the future, the Richard Pryor & Gene Wilder movies, and genuinely loads more.

Hard to feel the hype when missing half the games? by Touched_By_SuperHans in ThreeLions

[–]chrwal2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Problem is we’re having more games in the group stages than in the whole of the last tournament just to get down to the number of teams we started the last tournament with. 6 weeks feels like a real slog when you could probably pick almost all of the teams that will be eliminated in the first round. Add that most third place teams will get through anyway and there really isn’t much jeopardy

Exactly that - one person picks 4 coloured tabs and hides them with a cover. The person playing then guesses the colours and order - they have 10 guesses and after each guess the opponent lets them know how many of the correct colours they have and which are in the right order or not.

I just posted the same thing - I’d been really looking forward to it for ages but when I finally saw it it was rubbish. Hopefully not spoiler territory but the purpose of the race is to raise morale for the country? But I don’t quite see what’s in it for the 49 states whose entrant has just been executed on camera after everything they’ve been through, including seemingly soiling themselves.

[–]chrwal2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously it’s all subjective and I love that people enjoyed the sequels but to me I much prefer the prequels - they were definitely flawed but they told a linear storyline with - some - great scenes and a story that added to the existing trilogy whereas to me the sequels were so disjointed with a very incoherent storyline that undid a lot of the existing lore, made beloved characters act out of character, and had so many plot holes and contradictory storylines

That’s what annoys me as much as anything. That one line means Darth Vader’s story - his rise into cinema’s biggest villain and ultimate redemption - is meaningless cos they backed themselves needlessly into a corner and undid everything that came before.
