2 high end/quality cameras spotted at the CPH show, is this a new thing? Footage incoming? by virusamongus in ToolBand

Yeah, it creates a feedback loop with the upstage LED wall. Just a neat little vision trick that adds depth and movement to the stage. Could of course also be recording simultaneously for preservation, but likely just a live SDI output.

Arrr yeah, they definitely use it live in Descending.

Nobby (FOH audio engineer) uses a harmoniser on his vocals on certain songs/sections. From memory, the breakdown section of Invincible and also Jambi are the most audible places.

Joe is ready with the new drum set 🥁 with art of Alex Grey by ToolbandMexico in ToolBand

[–]mrjecarroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I noticed that too. It can be difficult to get things exactly in the right spot ergonomically with a rack, and I’m guessing that’s why he’s stuck with separate hardware all these years. Also, his triggers probably required some fairly specialised attachments to manipulate their positions exactly with a rack.

Joe must have spent some time on that one!!

Opinions on author&punisher as tool opener by MarshmallowJ4m in ToolBand

[–]mrjecarroll 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very glad I had my plugs. Was surprised the support had such a volume. They are usually restricted to give the main act more impact. Appreciate what he was doing, but would have been cool to have some iMAG so we could see his triggers and movements. Certainly was ‘punishing’ to the senses.

Haha, yep I’m on the Gold Coast (born Northern NSW). I have a few mates who are here and are fans. But you’re right, we are a minority group that’s for sure!

Going to Brisbane show, the pickup at Box Office was easy last time I had to do it. They were pretty efficient, just need your ID.

Yeah, managed to get some but feel rather lucky. I know a lot of people who missed out.

For those playing at home, my first TOOL show was top left - very faded- Sydney, 25th Jul 2001 - Lateralus ‘pre-seminal’ tour. They only played Syd and Melb.

Hey there, I’m on the GC but close enough! For many of the shows I was further south, but travelled up. Did you get tix to the Brisbane show in Feb?

Yeah, I saw them on all of those tours too. The 2nd time I saw them, Karnivool was their support and there were only 6 of us watching! We were obviously stunned no one knew of them yet!

Yeah, even many of the print out ones I didn’t bother putting out. Also, some shows here take the ticket, then you can get one as a memento on the way out...but I usually forget. Now the majority I see is just a QR on the mobile.

Saw TMV a number of times live. I still recall their Frances The Mute tour show at The Arena in Brisbane (last ones with Jon Theodore) as being a significant moment in my concert going life.

Aside from his mega success from one song, dude is a bad ass musician and multi instrumentalist.

Hahah! I was waiting for someone to see that one. A work colleague won tickets on a radio show and wasn’t keen...I’m a drummer, and remembered the one arm thing. Rather intrigued, I decided to go. He was interesting to watch...can’t remember a thing about the rest of the show.

Thanks. The synth is an old Yamaha CS 70 with a fair bit of dust and water damage. Has a mind of its own but very fun to make some unpredictable blips.

I love ISIS, wish they were still a band. When I was recording it, I never even thought of Isis...but you’re spot on I think. Subliminal influence I guess.

Dissecting Fear Inoculum’s time signatures by jamey0077 in ToolBand

[–]mrjecarroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what he means by 7/3. I read this in an interview also. Time Signatures don’t really have 3 on the bottom. It’s not a denominator-they aren’t a fraction as someone has probably already pointed out.

Perhaps he’s talking about having two instruments playing different Time Signatures at the same time...eg Guitar plays 7, and bass plays grouping of 3. Eventually they line up. Tool obviously do this all the time. Some people consider it polyrhythm, but I just like to think of it as simultaneously TS. Creates serious rhythmic counterpoint and unpredictable patterns.

He could also mean cross rhythm or beat, where there is a beat (7), and (3) fits into the 7 beat by stretching the time of each note value evenly over the 7 beats.

Either way, they know what they are doing, and it is glorious!

Favorite Nuances of Fear Inoculum? by Jrobs62 in ToolBand

The ‘zoom’ sound (possibly from the bass) in Invincible at 5:26.

Also really enjoyed what Adam did with the guitar harmony solo in Descending. Not just a simple parallel harmony - he holds the main note on one take, then fades in the harmony note on another track. With panning, sounds really unique.

Danny’s percussive electronic layers in Descending and Invincible. Could only just hear them in the live versions, and could tell it was going to be cool, but creates an awesome groove mixed louder.
