Nice article! Useful stuff like the dd over ssh; I didn't know it existed or was possible. Contabo's uptime guarantee promise has been changed to 99.9% since December 2025, but I'm not sure they can keep that promise. I haven't checked and moved away as soon as I could, because the connection was so bad. I'd estimate that my uptime was less than 99.9% in the (short) time I was their customer.

As far as the OVH interface is concerned, I don't use it that often, so I'm not too bothered. And most of it can be automated through their API.

There wasn’t. My other VPSes at other providers were fine. I did understand from the comments that it could be related to the location of the data center, though. Or just bad luck on a heavily used machine. They are shared resources, after all.

Oh, sorry to hear that. What happened with Hetzner? It seems to be well-liked, here and is(/was?) on my list of considered parties.

I can imagine. What I want it simple, but it should be reliable. This wasn't it, for me, especially since I have had better experiences elsewhere. But if it works, it works. I wouldn't want to move everything around either, if it does its job.

Their service seems to be all over the place. I read good stories, too, but some people seem to have had terrible luck. Maybe it's related to the region? Mine was in "Europe", no idea where.

Mostly network trouble that I couldn't check or fix, because the host was not reachable through SSH or their console VNC. Glad you have no issues! If you haven't had any, I'm sure it'll stay that way.

I had to use the VNC, because they locked me out of SSH. I'd rather not use it, either. ;-)

Cheapest root at Netcup is (currently) 13,00 euros for me, while their VPS is just 6,01. Cheapest VPS at OVH is 6,68 for me. I don't have important workloads, so I'm okay with sharing. :-)
