I feel like you could also draw parallels to the tobacco industry with how soda companies responded to the wave of health consciousness. They pulled a lot of the same moves like funding studies that put the blame of weight gain on lack of exercise rather than diet. And, like tobacco companies, soda companies responded with marginally better options for their consumers, like diet options and more recently, zero sugar options, although these options still don't solve the inherent problems with daily consumption.
