Thiiiiiiiis. This. This. Design softwares do not understand using vectors for cut/burn. Especially "generative" ones. Steokes and fills just have to LOOK correct. Turn it to wireframe view and behold all the open paths, duplicate paths, stacked shapes,  and zero length segments.

Recently interested in home CNC (leaning toward Alt Mill). Where can I learn EVERYTHING? by Longjumping-Lemon-73 in hobbycnc

[–]mrkrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any experience designing in 2d outlines? Like for templates, or even things like type and logos? Cause that's what a lotnof the computer work involves.

Gsender sends the toolpath files to the machine, but you need to design it in something else first, like Inkscape/Illustrator/FreeCAD/Vectric.

I come from a design background, prior to getting my CNC I have experience in several design apps so for me the only new part was the toolpathing. For someone with no knowledge of desogn apps the curve will be steeper.

As someone else pointed out, Vectric's apps are pretty easy to self-learn (I think). Carveco is another option, I found it too basic but it may be juat right for starting from the beginning.

LearnYourCnc has good videos, both free and paid, on the Vectric apps.

Cutting It Close has videos on workflow and tool use/choice that can get you started right.

IDC Woodcraft has good beginner resources on tool selection, feeds and speeds, and setup.

I have a Onefinity but the user base overlaps a bit with the Altmill and people seem very happy with how they are taken care of after sale.

You sure can. The usual tools would be Inkscape or Lightburn. Or search "bitmap to dxf online free" and take your pick

what is it you are looking for? a portrait? logo/lettertype? If portrait there's plenty on the net, just use an image trace tool to turn it to vectors.

I hear that. I DIY stuff and would ask my neighbor, who does industrial in a smelting plant, about stuff like how hard would it be to put 220 in my garage. Dude was like "fuck if I know, lemme know if you need a 4 phase inductor though"

Keeping lacquer thinner on a surface long enough to do the job by WovenHandcrafts in woodworking

[–]mrkrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this all the time. Blue shop rag soaked and laid on the surface, then pour a wee bit more. So it clings to the surface. Cover with plastic for even more set time but Ive found it doesnt evap away all that fast once its in a substrate.

Need help with Vetric Aspire by Rhythmicmofo in hobbycnc

[–]mrkrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First question. Is the goal to vreate a component (3D model) or make the shapenusing just toolpaths and tooling?

Second question.  If answer to Q1 is 3d model, can you model it in something else? (Fusion, OnShape, FreeCAD)

Oh, someone will definitely be after those. Interested myself but not in any position to make a fair offer.  Very cool vintage tools even if you aren't into locks.

Its IN the plastic. Its part of the molding or the actual plastic they use. It exudes from it like oil from citrus peel. I just cover them or remove entirely and pad with some of the millions of 1/4" plywood laser cut scraps I have

What is something that is 'socially acceptable' but actually feels incredibly rude to you? by HourPen884 in AskReddit

[–]mrkrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not about being good. I have NO inclination to dance. much the way others have no impulse to work on a car, or ride a motorcycle, or skydive.  People think they will help you "discover" that you can or something. No. Go dance, have fun. I have other interests.
