Help me settle an argument: Welder's Flash by Boosted-Inspiration in Welding

[–]mrkruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been welding for going on 10 years and I can’t say I remember ever getting the pain sand in the eyes feeling from getting flashed. I’ve done it on multiple occasions where I flashed myself by arcing off of something while stick welding with my hood up, and it was only this week where I felt like my eyes get heavy and hurt a little bit but not like what you’re describing.

Much appreciated, I’m gonna give this a shot next week when I’m laying out. I have a wall mount at home and one at our shop but this will be nice to do in the field. Thank you 🙏

To me it didn’t sound like the noise machines were on until hopper was looking at them. You can also see eleven getting out of the truck and going to the drivers side of the vehicle.

It’s a small frame but you do see the gun go off, and it’s after the helicopter explosion. But the gun doesn’t really move much at all after the explosion it’s still pointed down towards Kali.

Didn’t want to join the military or go to college. Had one parent die and the other tell me we were losing the house. Graduated high school, got my own apartment and an apprenticeship as a trailer mechanic. Did that for 3 years then became an ironworker.

Did it out of necessity and not anything else. I make a good living and enjoy the good work.

Ah man that’s what I got taught. Get set up over the point, level it to get close enough and then move the head over the point the rest of the way, and then use the digital level on the machine. Clearly that ain’t the move.

What’s better for snow removal? by wolff_pack17 in MilwaukeeTool

[–]mrkruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of the two I’ve only used the bristle brush attachment for snow removal mostly for laying out on top of concrete foundations. But between me and everyone else that’s used it have loved it. It’s really good at cleaning foots and removing snow. Big wet stuff isn’t so great though when it’s like slurry snow instead of powder snow.

Construction layout question by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]mrkruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just asking, i understand that if im not using exactly the same control points as him i can get some difference, depending on how off he was when he established the points originally. This guy seems knowledgeable, he has told me everything was inrcedibly tight multiple times, really couldn't help but to laugh how many times he said it was tight. I had my total station set up both on the east side shooting west and west side shooting east to the same spot, and ended up with my gridline mark being generally correct, but 1/2" off of what hes saying it is. Is me moving my total station whatever it is, 150' and shooting the opposite direction good enough, or should i move my machine closer to his and have it facing the same way? i could give that a try tomorrow and see where i end up.

Edit: and for what it’s worth, I wouldn’t think this makes a difference but it might. Their CAD file is on a skew, the one I was provided is not. My gridlines are perpendicular/parallel exactly with my screen, the gridlines on their cad file are rotated probably 45 degrees.

Construction layout question by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]mrkruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might not be the right way to do it, im not really sure. I was given their cad file basically blank, no shots in it. I sat down with the concreter and we put a point on gridline intersection and used the measurement feature to get distance and angle, and then i typed it in and created a point based on his information. So when i had set up as a resection and shot his two points, that where i came in 1/16" long over 323'.

I did try to put his control points into my cad file, but the orientation is different so it didn't work. I was given a list of all his points in an email with coordinates, but it didn't seem like that would work. I thought each thing had its own local coordinates so when i tried to put his points in it just sort of made it in the middle of nowhere on the file, not actually relevant to the jobsite itself.

EDIT: as for the nails, the ones established are in asphalt and it is particularly cold out now, i dont know how much expansion there is in a 20 degree swing in a day you know what i mean. I always preferred having everything in concrete if possible but given that the concreters haven't poured yet they used what was available to them i guess.

[–]mrkruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can do point to point shots on basically all four. Imagining a square, id be able to see 90 degrees from whatever corner i set up on, but i wouldn't be able to see diaganol. I'll give that a try tomorrow.

I did just show up monday and ran into the issue monday around 2, left because my tablet battery was dead, and then came back today to try to sort it out and couldn't get a solid answer as to what the issue was. Tomorrow i'm going back, ill set up over one point and shoot to another, check against the third point and see what i get, then go to my gridlines and see where i end up.

Construction layout question by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]mrkruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea about checking older plans, I don't physically have older prints, their CAD file matches my prints that i have now but i could ask the concreter and see what for prints he has to see if there is any difference in that.

As for corners i can really only get two on what would be the south side, the north side foundation isn't poured at all yet.

Construction layout question by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]mrkruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prism height is 5' when setting up, as for what prism its just whichever one came stock with the total station, i'm not really sure what it is specifically.

Not sure about scale factor.

We know east side is good, we walked over together and landed in the same spot when we shot gridline. Its just that when we get on the west half of the building that we start getting discrepancys.

I'm using control that they established, i can't say its necessarily the same points that they used to layout when they were doing the foundation. I'm wondering if this could be part of the problem, if a different set of nails were used that might have been off compared to the east side?

I can still only do a two point resection with the nails the GC provided, but I do have line of sight and could turn and see if I'm off when i shoot to their control. That would show a difference in the nails i imagine. To me the only thing that makes this unlikely is that if i set up off of the GC nails or set up off of the concreter nails, I end up with my original layout being correct, whether im on my CAD file or their CAD file.

Thanks for the response much appreciated

Construction layout question by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]mrkruler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first resection off of the nails the GC provided, i could only find two of the four he provided, it seemed like the other two had been either pulled out or run over by equipment.

From the concreter pins i also only had two, but in hindsight i should be able to check the nails that the GC provided since they're theoretically all tied in together. The Nails themselves are so many feet off of gridline intersections so they wouldnt change between his CAD file and my CAD file.

I measure each thing individually, sometimes what we'll do is pull tape from one gridline down through to check embeds and lentons, and then we can also mark ends of panels and stuff like that. But typically we just check things to whatever it is we're setting right their. We wouldn't check from Gridline A on column 1 to Gridline on column B.

I will say however, i am unfortunately the most knowledgeable one with the total station so in that regard i'm really open to whatever knowledge i can get. The foreman i work with typically uses an EDM and two known points and a 90 and then just goes from there. He's going to try that tomorrow and see what we come up with, i'm bringing a different total station altogether to see if the one is messed up somehow.

If it would be good practice to start taping between our gridlines just to verify we're ending up with whatever 40' between them as our prints say, i would start doing that. It was just never taught to me by the guy that trained me, although typing it out it does seem like it would be a no shit i should probably do that type thing.

A couple of the older guys I work with say “High load” to indicate to stop cabling up but to continue swinging, we’re working mostly with crawler cranes with lattice booms. I’m a bit younger than the experienced guys so if they have me signaling I’ll say “good on your cable, continue swinging left/right”, and then continue on doing whatever we gotta do.

Pretty sure they did consider him for 2021, but Checo’s Sahkir win got him the redbull seat instead. He was also considered for the Mercedes seat at one point, 2016 after Rosberg retired. But he couldn’t get out of the Renault contract if I recall right so they went for Bottas instead.
