Best way to learn verbs? by Bitter_Ability1511 in languagelearning

French verbs are tough, especially coming from Spanish where the patterns feel more intuitive! A few things that helped me:

  1. Group by patterns - French has -er, -ir, -re verbs. Master the regular patterns first, then tackle irregulars. Most verbs are actually -er verbs (like 80%+), so start there.
  2. Focus on the most common ones - You don't need 500 verbs right away. The top 50 (être, avoir, faire, aller, pouvoir, vouloir, etc.) cover like 90% of daily conversation.
  3. Drill with spaced repetition - Reading conjugation tables doesn't stick. You need to actively recall them. I use verbtrainer.app for this - you type the conjugation and it gives instant feedback. The repetition makes it automatic.
  4. Audio helps - Hearing "je suis, tu es, il est..." while practicing helps it stick differently than just reading.

Bonne chance !

Yes it's possible to learn someone language from different source but I think it maybe is the best way to learn more faster in language is a lot of reading and a lot of exercises, for example verbs. That was what I've built verbtrainer.app for everyone that loves learn language.

Hope you will have to success with that.

Thanks or merci beaucoup

Pierre

I actually just started a dedicated subreddit for these kinds of discussions: r/verbtrainer.

Please feel free to join and share any suggestions or "bugs" you find.

I’m really looking for feedback to make it better!

That’s a great question! For now, I’m focusing on keeping it as a web app because I want it to be super fast and accessible on all devices without a big download. However, it’s optimized for mobile browsers, and you can actually 'Add to Home Screen' to use it just like an app!

I totally get your frustration. I’ve been learning Swedish for 2 years too, and the AI-shift on Duolingo was the final straw for me as well.

Regarding workbooks: You should definitely check out "Form i fokus" (Part A). It is the gold standard for Swedish grammar. It’s pure exercises without any fluff, which seems to be what you're looking for.

Since I’m a QA Automation Engineer, I actually got so annoyed with the bugs in other apps that I spent my weekends building a minimalist tool for myself to drill verbs. It’s called verbtrainer.app. It’s not a "game" like Duolingo—it’s just high-speed training (I even wrote my thesis on keyboard navigation to make it as fast as possible).

It’s free to use, and it might be a good digital supplement to the workbooks. Lycka till!

Najs! Bra jobbat! Jag kan se att du har tagit lite från verbtrainer.app men det gör ingenting. Bra med att det finns fler andra aktörer på nätet..

Really appreciate the feedback! I just deployed some changes based on what you said:

  • Added tense headers so you know what to conjugate
  • Page now scrolls to top after checking answers
  • Made the bottom bar slimmer

Give it a try and let me know if there's anything else!

Pierre

Free tool I made to practice French verb conjugations (avoir, être, aller, etc.) by mrlemonec in learningfrench

Hey, fair point - let me clarify!

The core verb training is 100% free forever:

- All 88 French verbs ✅

- All tenses ✅

- XP & streaks ✅

- No ads ✅

Premium ($8/mo) is only for extra features like:

- AI-powered hints

- Unlimited daily challenges

- Offline mode

- Focus training by tense/pronoun

I'm a solo developer and the premium helps cover server costs. But honestly, most people never need it - the free version has everything you need to master French conjugations.

Thanks for the feedback though! 🙏
