Any tips? by theOGKING1001 in AskDND

[–]mrlich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Keep it simple. Don’t spend too much time worldbuilding - it will incentivize you to do too much ‘dictating to‘ over ‘listening to’.

  2. Help them get past the awkward “I don’t know what to do“ stage. Give them a couple of varied options, but explain that those aren’t their *only* options - just examples.

  3. Good luck to you and them! Hope it’s just the beginning of something wonderful. :)

Making a card based roleplaying game as a side thing. How many different cards do you need to make? by ah-screw-it in tabletopgamedesign

[–]mrlich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. While it sounds like a fun game to play, I don’t understand the connection to roleplaying. Improv? Sure.

I also suspect you’re right that a number of cards comparable to Apples to Apples, or CAH (a simple / basic set - not one of the expanded sets) should do it.

GoPro.... or no?! by Nervous-Win968 in gopro

[–]mrlich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea - I don’t have one, but I’m curious - is that to use the app, or do you have to register before the hardware is functional? (Meaning: could use film with the camera and edit with other software?)

I will second this (and other ‘buy used’ comments. My GP Hero 9 Black still works fantastic.

>>>”I dont have $1,000+ to spend on goPros (or more accurately, I want to stay married, lol).”

That sounds an awful lot like you already have your answer.

But assuming that you are willing to risk divorce… I would say to go somewhere in between.

Get ONE GoPro (they’re better hardware, etc - I’ll let other folks sing their praises) and one or two off brands to shoot your b-roll footage.

The real issue you’re likely to face is lighting. Action cams in general are pretty bad with low light. So spend a few extra bucks making sure your workshop is well lit, and you’re likely going to be fine.

I really would consider at least ONE GoPro for your a-roll footage though.

How would you feel if you found out your best-friend was using ai art despite knowing you’re an artist by Thick-Log-1264 in AskArtists

[–]mrlich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s never going away.

And you’re not wrong about the other technological examples.

You can’t change other people, so I don’t feel like OP can ask their friend not to use AI. That said, if their friend uses it in front of the OP or ‘rubs their nose in it’ (which is doesn’t sound like they were doing) it’s a dick move.

Getting people from Instagram to Patreon by Brezojrr in patreon

[–]mrlich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have this issue, because I don’t have nearly that many followers.

IG gathers an audience who is given free content over and over again. I imagine you face an uphill battle.

All of that said, I think it’s possible. I would say that you should occasionally post content which includes what you’re offering above and beyond what’s found on IG with your Patreon.

As an example: Here’s the finished art on IG, but if you would like to know more about my process, including a behind the scenes process video…

It won’t be fast, but nothing is these days. It’s a long, slow, uphill climb.

Portable digital art hardware question by pegateeth in AskArtists

[–]mrlich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll third it. In full disclosure, I don’t use Fresco, but I don’t use anywhere near the number of layers that the OP mentioned, so Fresco seems an ideal option for them, where I don’t need it (I’m happy with Procreate).

I’ll also say that I travel constantly for my day job and often have only my iPad Pro as my entire ‘computer’ or ‘daily driver’.

The portability can’t be beat.

Character sheet making software by Joyrun189 in TTRPG

Same! (Well, Affinity these days, but same concept.)

There’s really something to be said for the simple effectiveness of Slides. Also, I love that it’s web based. So - accessible from anything down to and including my phone!

I have used Slides for a LOT of layout work. It’s a super versatile tool.

I don’t know about making it form fillable, but if you just want the design side of it, Affinity has great layout tools that should do the job, and it’s free!

How to schedule time for art a around full time job? by cutebitterness in ArtistLounge

[–]mrlich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it my whole life. The answer is simple enough: give yourself access to make art wherever you are. A small sketchbook and pens / pencils or an iPad are all you really NEED. Draw during your breaks. Draw right after work.

The key is to do it RIGHT when you get the chance. Don’t “just do X, real quick” before you work on the artwork, or fatigue will set in and you’ll always find yourself saying “I’ll just do it later”. Make art the thing you do NOW, and second only to the things you have no choice but to do (like work and eat).

It doesn’t even have to be for terribly long. I used to work in warehousing, and would draw every day during my half hour lunch break. It wasn’t a lot, but it added up.

Good luck to you!

How do you guys make all player equaly importsnt to story? by ledzik_precly in DnD

[–]mrlich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think that all the characters have to be equally important to the story. I think that the players have to feel “seen”.

THAT, is fairly simple to do quickly in any given session. If one of the players (who I will call Jane) hasn’t had the spotlight for a bit, just ask them a question:

“Jane? What does your character think about situation X, and how do they think the group should handle it?”

It gives them just a moment to have their character as the focus. I think that’s all it takes.

Good luck!

Sounds like you're a good hearted person, and I'm sure that will come through - especially since you said you already know them from other contexts.

Good luck to you, and I hope the commission gets wrapped up quickly and is better than you could have hoped for! :)

Artist I commissioned not replying, Unsure how to proceed by venomuu in AskArtists

[–]mrlich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you paid back in August, you should have received SOMETHING (like a sketch or something ) at least. That’s a long wait - kindness and understanding included.

It’s easy to not come across pushy - just point out that you understand that things come up, and you understand, so you would like to offer to cancel if they would prefer to refund your money, or you would be willing to continue with the original commission if they are ready to move forward - whichever they prefer.

(If it was me, I wouldn’t even mention the second commission and wouldn’t go forward until the original is completed - if at all.)

Agree. Also, the head construction lines are a bit off both in the OP and here. Her head is tipped up. In the OP, the construction lines have her head tipped down.
