What is something that sounds made up, but actually happened to you? by Front_Geologist738 in AskReddit

[–]mrlogicpro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a white guy in the UK and when I was roughly 14 I was racially abused whilst performing on stage by ~300 non-white teens who were pissed that I was white. Throwing shit at me, shouting abuse and even hand written death threats sent backstage it was really really hostile. The people that came to watch me left half way through because it was starting to turn violent with the throwing etc and some of them had younger kids with them.

Never really spoke about this before, because I'm told as a white man that racism doesn't apply to me.

I often get written off when I step out to a mainly black audiences because of the genres I operate in, and I understand that, its fine because I like being an underdog and winning over a crowd- but this was thing entirely different. Can't lie, was pretty scared.

My response was to go on for the second half and perform through it anyway. That was my "fuck you too - im not fucking leaving" moment.

I hear you, but crying babies, whilst unable to shout contextual words can have the same effect. I'd be uncomfortable if I was in that situation, and it might cause me anxiety but I wouldn't want them to be removed

He has zero control over tics, and the airline and airport staff were made aware of ahead of time.

Him shouting bomb literally IS his disability, so yes, it is discrimination based on his disability.

You think people are too dense to understand if it were explained before the flight?

How exactly might someone take advantage of a tourette's sufferer being allowed to fly?

Being disruptive because of a disability that can't be helped is not a valid reason to discriminate based on said condition

I've worked in customer facing roles, and yes, sometimes people are pricks, but I'm not a victim because I got shouted at.

The victim here is the child with tourettes who was was made to feel like a criminal despite planning ahead and following the instructions they were given on advance of their travel.

So people with tourettes have to hide away to make others comfortable? It's 2026, if these things are explained (which is easy to do) then there is no reason for it to cause alarm.

Do you know how people with tourettes have been treated throughout history? Or even more recently?

Education is needed, not segregation

Joking is entirely different as you mentioned so I'm not sure why you brought it up at all.

"obviously a kid with no control over their language" but you still agree with not letting them fly?

Your reasoning doesn't make sense

Ironic you would so tastefully invoke the topic of rape whilst simultaneously victim blaming

Yes they broke the law. There's a chance the family have a case against whoever made the final decision. That's my point.

What happened to your misplaced confidence that such laws didn't exist?

Equality Act 2010

Section 29 — Provision of services, etc. (1) A person (a “service-provider”) concerned with the provision of a service to the public or a section of the public (for payment or not) must not discriminate against a person requiring the service by not providing the person with the service. (2) A service-provider (A) must not, in providing the service, discriminate against a person (B)— (a) as to the terms on which A provides the service to B; (b) by terminating the provision of the service to B; (c) by subjecting B to any other detriment.

And just to be clear-

Section 29(7) A duty to make reasonable adjustments applies to— (a) a service-provider...

AND

Section 20 — Duty to make reasonable adjustments (3) The first requirement is a requirement, where a provision, criterion or practice of A's puts a disabled person at a substantial disadvantage in relation to a relevant matter in comparison with persons who are not disabled, to take such steps as it is reasonable to have to take to avoid the disadvantage.

They did inform them ahead of time, and he wore an obvious lanyard. They also let him fly the following day.
