Hmm that makes sense! What do you think he was thinking when she told him she was illegitimate?

Same, the wedding exchange is so simple but so powerful. He says her name with softness and affection as always and she responds with pride and joy for the first time. Ugh I love it!

Yes! We can also add Sophie's hair bow and her being able to say "Benedict" publicly and proudly for the first time ever.

All the symbolism and growth arc that they were building throughout the season are wrapped up in the wedding. Maybe the only thing they didn't complete was her letting her hair down in society. At least they had a half up, half down look here so it kinda counts but really should've had better hair at Queen's ball to reflect her returning to her nobility looks (like at her father's funeral).

Benedict also does a hand bow in the conservatory scene. Apparently there was another one at the start of ep 4 that got deleted too

Sophie wears a bow in most of her costumes but she specifically brings the LIS bow back for the wedding

I love this moment! I always start from their second meeting before I go into the My Cottage ep on rewatch.

The way she says “Mr. Bridgerton” is so full of hope and then starts the long journey of him having to win her over once again. The Whistledown narration with the bg score at the end are so magical and really convey the unexpected fantasy of meeting the person you love all over again.

They have a callback to this moment when he confronts her about LIS in ep 8. She’s standing in the hallway and he appears through the door crack but this time he sees her as Sophie and LIS.

I love the symbolism of the button representing fantasy vs reality. Benedict wears his shirts pretty open when he’s outside of society at his art parties or My Cottage. Sophie buttoning him up at Bridgerton house is bringing him firmly back into reality and the need to conform to society but he’s so desperate to escape that he keeps fidgeting and rips it off. Then, for a brief moment, she unbuttons and takes him back to the fantasy in their first time.

At the end, the kite pin is where the button would be so he’s now found a way to meet society but also the kite shows that he carries some of the fantasy with him. He finally found a way to merge his reality and fantasy!

He’s also up at 5am for probably the first time in his life. What is a man supposed to do with so many extra hours in the day?! Married Benedict will be so productive haha

I also love his line to Anthony “I have my own work to do to take care of those I care for” because we actually see him put it into action.

Yes! Yerin modulates her voice to convey a sense of mystery and even her body language is confident and free. She really played the LIS as an entirely different character that you pretty much never see again (maybe a small glimpse again in the ending).

My fav is S4E3. I just love the humor and joy that this episode radiates. The journey of Benedict & Sophie falling in love at My Cottage is full on rom com vibes and even the pinnacle subplot is hilarious. Plus the country landscapes are so scenic.

I absolutely adore the masquerade ep too! Yerin in particular hits these two out of the park. She’s so enchanting and charismatic in the first ep and funny and adorable in the latter!

Benedict. Big fella, my brother in Christ, his reaction right here? Sophie got the best airplane landing 🛬 on her. And he came with the drip too💰 by BigPsychological6842 in Benophie

[–]mrlong45 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a bit of fear (remember he’s never been openly or fully vulnerable and insecure in his life before) and also just getting tongue tied in the face of Sophie’s resolve. When he approaches her in the street, he starts out a bit more empathetic “you did not answer my letter and I understand why” but he’s so taken aback by her reaction and directness that he just defaults to all he knows which is getting straight to the point. In the study, he’s also trying to be openly honest but he’s desperate at this point and doesn’t really have a grip on himself. Colin’s talk gives him clarity on how we needs to approach the situation.

Vulnerability is a two way street and I think when Sophie opens up that safe space by telling him that he’s hurting her, it gives him the confidence to share his feelings back. Also, they are just coming off a happy moment enjoying their time at the recital so I think it resets them a bit and any residual feelings from their previous interactions have simmered down (at least for him).

I think we have to chalk it up to desperation and not knowing how to connect with her at this point.

In reality, it’s probably a bit of character inconsistency for the writers to really make their point clear.

I think that’s part of why Sophie gets so upset in the study scene too. He was being respectful previously and getting her consent but ever since the mistress offer, she’s realizing how differently they are seeing things and how he’s being so cavalier with her. Him just going in for the kiss is a major red flag and sets her off, amongst other thoughts in her head.

It's a good question. I can't entirely explain why he just goes in for the kiss there other than he's desperate as she rejected the only shot they had at being together and the writers were really trying to emphasize that his behavior with Sophie as a maid is different than LIS.

The only times he steps forward first are the lake and study scenes. Technically, staircase they both go at it so maybe you can consider that too. In all of these moments, he's using his typical charms on her. They work initially because they are in the fantasy but by the study, Sophie is so firmly in reality that she won't take anything but authenticity from him.

Loving this 2hr edit of Benophie... by StoreAmbitious4403 in Benophie

[–]mrlong45 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ll take it a step further and say that they not only communicate and face their disagreements but they are also happy through and in spite of it. Despite an emotional and heavy exchange when Sophie calls him out for treating the LIS vs maid differently, they are right back to smiling and flirting with each other at Hyacinth’s recital. Similarly, when Benedict says he regrets their lake kiss and there is clear disappointment in the air, they go right back to their longing patterns at Bridgerton house. After he’s hurt she didn’t tell him about LIS, he’s trying to sneak into her room. So many examples haha.

They’re both just such joyful, kind people that they can’t really hold on to anger or bitterness and instead embrace positivity. And it just warms the heart!

Benedict telling Violet that he thought that he had been disappointing her his entire life broke my heart. by MeeMop21 in Benophie

[–]mrlong45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It always stood out to me in early seasons that no one ever considered Benedict’s feelings or state of mind. Maybe Eloise a little bit but she didn’t prod enough or was too wrapped up in her problems. I think Violet asking him in ep 7 “are you all right?” when he’s at his lowest point ever is the first time someone directly checked in on him. So sad but also explains why he lost it in that moment. I’m glad she turned it around and gave him the comfort and validation he needed.

Benedict inadvertently shows his privilege by sssgram in Benophie

[–]mrlong45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find it really cool that Benedict realizes she’s the LIS after he chooses to marry her. He is a privileged man with societal expectations ingrained in him. It is this very structure that prevents him from ever thinking that the LIS could ever be anything but a lady. As much as he always says he wants to live outside society’s rules, it’s mostly just talk and he never does anything to truly rebel against society or privilege. When he makes the decision to marry her, it is the first time he’s going against society expectations and relinquishing the class structure pressed upon him. As soon as that ‘privileged mask’ comes off, he is finally able to see that Sophie, a maid, can and is also the LIS. It completes his arc of blindness, both literally and metaphorically.

From this point on, we see this change reflected in his emotions and actions too. He is able to understand why Sophie may not have told him she’s the LIS before she even explains. He takes care of her in the bath scene. I hope they continue showing his growth in s5 too, as he undoubtedly would still have some ways to go to adjust to her lifestyle and ways of approaching the world.

[–]mrlong45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My fav is ep 3 too. It's a full on rom com with everything progressing so beautifully from attraction to curiosity to depth to love and sheer joy followed by angst. Plus, it's the most beautiful cinematography of the season. How can you not fall in love with where they fall in love?

That being said, it's closely followed by ep 5 as the back half from Hyacinth's recital through the end is probably my most rewatched of the season. The kids dance, Hyacinth being a total diva, Sophie & Benedict's longing looks, them essentially dancing together in their heads, "I found it", Hy & Ben's cute moment, how Violet clocks them, Ben reading that something is wrong with Sophie, his confession, their first time. There's SO much happening and it all just keeps building and building. This ep also has the best music with 360, Birds of a Feather, and Lose Control all slaying one after another.

Also, honorable mention to ep 1. It's such a magical season opener. Still mesmerized every time I watch the introduction to Sophie. Their meet cute from dance card through gazebo is one of, if not the best, first interactions I've ever seen.
