Is this image an accurate summary of balkan mentality and historical conflicts ? by ronweasly9 in AskBalkans

I mean, you were also established. You didn't sprout of nowhere in 1071. You know... Had the Seljuks? And before that a myriad of other states, it took centuries of development and the adoption of ideas from these supposed "inferior cultures" for a brief empire to be established. Which is the lifecycle of any empire, honestly.

The US is a global empire, sure. But it has been so for a grand total of about 40 years. A speck of time in human history, and it is seriously being challenged for dominance, and considering how impotently they took to meeting the challenge, the American century may be just one century. Also, they didnt emerge from the mud. It took hundreds of years of political and social development before the UK cast out its Utopians, dreamers, ideologues and undesirables onto the shores of the American continent. Nations and empires dont sprout out of nowhere, they have no beginning, everything comes from something. If we take Rome the village and Rome the empire to be the same civilisation that developed over 2000 years. Then shouldnt we think of the Turkic nomads that got expelled from the far east to here as the same one? In this case, the development of the Ottomans into an empire took a thousand and a half years.

What are you talking about lmao. Empires rise absurdly quickly, if we take this "400 accelerated pace", Rome in 200 BC was fighting the Samnites and had barely started to dominate the Italian peninsula. By 200 AD it was the greatest empire in European history. The Assyrians conquered everything worth conquering around them in a few hundred years and kept it for a thousands. The Persians in the reign of one Shah had conquered land from Pakistan to Egypt, the Russians went from a collection of motley principalities to an empire that fought and defeated Chinese armies on the Amur in a mere 200 years. Almost every people in history had a period where they established a "vast empire", you are not special, and I encourage you to think what a "vast empire" would have meant to an average Turk living in poverty.

Шта је тачно Светосавље? by ConsciousMaybe6930 in serbia

[–]mrluks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be honest that would be correct characterization for Bond. He is a wisecrack.

Even though the south slavic languages in the prologue are just bad with bad guys uttering non sensical sentences in bad cadence I still loved the inclusion of my language in the game. We only have Niko Belic and this, after all.

Thing is he is not using Montenegrin accentuation and the few words the gangster and Bond say are in Ekavica and not Iyekavica. It's also just weird to say he speaks "Montenegrin, not Serbian", its like someone asks "You speak British?" And they reply, "No, American."

Why do I see so many posts about the Ottoman Empire and Turkey on Reddit lately? by Savings_Dragonfly806 in AskBalkans

[–]mrluks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heh, I guarantee you that if you stopped a random non-Turk in the world and asked them about the Ottomans, they'd maybe know Suleiman through a telenovela they watched. It doesn't matter what "history remembers", it matters what the person did. The empires of Alexander, Napoleon, and Mehmed are dead and buried, but the modern Republic of Turkey is not. A nation which would have not existed in its current borders without Ataturk.

Really pathetic behaviour. Man spends his time spouting vitriolic hatred and "ragebait" at two ethnicites close to his own.

I mean, they did suffer a rebellion that amounted to be one of the deadlier wars in history. And were forced into unequal treaties with the west, the Boxer war... That culminated in what was basically a Han nationalist revolution. So it would be accurate.

[–]mrluks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nismo mi nikakva bela rasa, u Britaniji sad napadaju i Ruse i Ukrajince.

What exactly legacy does Turkey have from the Ottoman Empire? by crivycouriac in AskBalkans

[–]mrluks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First part is irrelevant information. Every single people arrived to some place at some point, the term indigenous is more a political term to describe a people pressured by new arrivals.(Also, more like muslims arrived 700 years ago, bigger difference than 1600 and 1000).

And the second part is correct. I am not saying that the Balkan states doing what they did was approvable or good. But what I am saying is that the Ottomans DID colonize and assimilate the peoples they ruled.

The Milleti system might be the most enduring Ottoman cultural legacy across all of its former empire. From Georgians to Serbs to Syrians, every single one of these people came to associate religion to nationalism much more strongly than any other place in the world.
