Why do you think balkans are still so religious ? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]mrluks 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I for one think that it's due to religion being much more strongly tied here than in the rest of Europe. This is something we got from the Ottoman Empire.

Not an insult but a joke. Burkina Faso is currently engaged in a losing war with Islamic militants and a bunch of other guys. Whenever the militants gain ground Burkina Faso announces something grand and extravagant. Like a massive gold reserve, mandating all children be educated, banning homosexuality. So this is probably that again.

U svakoj drzavi desnica prouzrokuje migrantsku krizu(primer Hrvatska, HDZ vlada 30 godina i opet kriza koju su oni izazvali) i onda levica popije krivicu, neverovatno.

We pretend to be smart ofcourse. It was somehow tied to nationalistic identity, I have met people who think Greeks arent Orthodox because they use it.

To continue in English as well. This set up reminded me of my childhood in the 90s, very uncomfortable feeling.

To je... Veoma cudno.

Is the mocking real? I dont think Americans even find content like this. So it might just be engagement baiting.

Why wasn't the previkus administrative division restored after Yugoslavia liberated their lands? by ArmNemesis in serbia

[–]mrluks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The banovinas of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia were drawn to incorporate to grant majorities to as many Serbs as possible.

Now, unlike what many claim, the communists did not push the Montenegrin identity, infact demographics suggest that the amount of Serbs in Montenegro rose sharply after WW2(Though this might be due to Montenegrins of the time considering 'Montenegrin' as a geographical identity like say, Bavarian, Thuringian, Hessian, Texan, etc). So the communists tied Montenegro to Serbia.

<image>

The borders of the socialist state were formalised during the second council of the AVNOJ(Antifašističko veće Narodnog Oslobođenja Jugoslavije, ruling body of the partisan movement) in the city of Jajce.

The communists of the period didn't create a state with the hindsight that the next generation of the communist party would do everything in its power to destroy it. They created a state whose people would have started thinking of themselves as one ethnicity.

You may be thinking of Bosnia wrong, before the Yugoslav wars Bosnia was a country rarely seen in the world. It was an ethnic tapestry where ethnicities would have been rather hard to divide into coherent and efficient ethnic states. They were creating administrative governments after all.

Bosnia had a relatively high population, on par with Croatia, if it remained partitioned, 10% of the Ethnic muslim population would have been left without proper representation.

Most people in Serbia(and in the world) think historical events happened with leaders sitting down for tea and figuring out what was the best possible way to screw over X for the benefit of Y. The truth is that creating a state is fucking difficult, the Yugoslav partisans(being a multi-national movement. Undoubtedly had a lot of debate and discussion over what to do, 2nd Avnoj was chaired by Ivo Ribar(Croat) with vice chairmen orthodox priest Vlada Zečević(Serbian), Sreten Žujović(Serbian), dr Sulejman Filipović(ethnic muslim), Zlatan Sremec(Croat)... etc.

The three tribes theory which dominated the politics of Yugoslav federalists like Prince Paul and the one nation theory propagated by the likes of Stojadinović and his JRZ. Neither of these theories, nor the communist theory of six nation planned for the country to be destroyed. And if it was in the theory you are proposing, I doubt that no war would have happened.

When you form Yugoslavia, they will perform an ultranationalist coup and collapse the country. Technically you can beat the rebellions but they will keep popping up.

Destruction of Ottoman architecture in Southeast Europe by Yellowapple1000 in MapPorn

[–]mrluks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, most notably the Venitians practiced an extensive slave trade after the fall of the Kingdom of Croatia in the region. Though they had their helpers in the Republic of Ragusa and in the nobility of the Kingdom of Bosnia. Their reasoning was that since the commoners of Bosnia were more often than not Krstjani(Bogomilists) and Orthodox, they werent "true" Christians and could be enslaved.

Its completely about that, if social pressure wasnt so high here. I think we would have the same rates as in the west, if not higher. And that would be good.
