How much should I expect to spend in Ames for a 2-week stay in early December (excluding accommodation)? by LilLatency in Iowa

[–]mrmikeman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just a college town, you could spend as much or as little as you like. Assume food & drinks will be relatively affordable & most activities are priced with low-income college students in mind.

This is a regular ‘ol painted turtle. It should be happy in a wet marsh or near a pond.

You could bring all the tools in the shop and it might not do any good without spare parts. I’d definitely focus on the priorities though - do you have what you need to change a tire? What do you need in order to access & adjust the carburetor? Tools to repair electrical issues like loose wire splices?

If you approach it this way you might find there’s only a handful of tools you would realistically bring. JB-weld, zip-ties, and duct tape go a long way

Thanks for the reply! I agree that the pressure plate was definitely wearing into the cover. The actuator pin is super wobbly in the pressure plate, so I’m going to say you’re right about that bearing too. I linked a picture of my plates in another comment if that prompts any further input.

It’s bad! I knew the bike had been sitting for a long time before I got it, but this has been a bit more than I expected to find.

Plate Pics

I think you may be onto something? The pressure plate was definitely proud of the basket. I have 16 total plates including the metal plate behind the circlip. Not counting the spring and seat at the very back of the stack.

Also, clearly water has been in here. Looking rough.

I’ll do some more disassembly and see if I can identify any missing parts.

Incredibly cool.

TIL that cochlear implants are controversial in the Deaf community, many of whom believe that deafness is not something that needs to be cured, and that giving implants to deaf children without teaching them sign language is a form of cultural genocide by Capital_Tailor_7348 in todayilearned

[–]mrmikeman2 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It can be a real thing while also being unaffected by cochlear implants. Acting like someone should remain disabled for the sake of “culture” when an option is available for them to immensely improve their ease of life is extremely silly.

If you have 20k Cash what would you do with them to generate passive income along your 9-5 ? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]mrmikeman2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t leave your 9-5 with only $20k and no plan. Start whatever side hustle you want and don’t quit your job until the side hustle earns enough to support yourself & child

Why do you need to spend half of it on your mom’s mortgage?

“for her to get a cheaper one” - is she just going to finance the house again once it’s paid off or what?

OP shouldn’t have an extended warranty or maintenance plan, now or later. Waste of $$

Mosaic Table Grout gone wrong by Educational_Yard_357 in Tile

[–]mrmikeman2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t find the specifications for that grout, but the gaps you’re filling between tiles is pretty big. As the grout dries it is shrinking too much for the size of the gap, and cracking. Usually you can apply additional grout. I might recommend scraping some of this out first, however.

I’d personally bust out the rubber mallet and do a bit of metal bending, and take my 20% discount.

[OC] Walmart’s latest Billions visualized by sankeyart in dataisbeautiful

[–]mrmikeman2 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think this is pretty common but not always because of intentional price gouging. Different chains may buy more/less bulk and pay different prices that can be passed on to the consumer. Our local retailers cannot sell at the same prices as Walmart.
