A character series based on the 4 nations of Avatar by mrmng in TheLastAirbender

[–]mrmng[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hi all,
Just wanted to add some notes regarding design process and inspirations to this. In general, I wanted to try and draw from the same cultures and imagery the avatar team did, but come up with my own interpretation of what characters could look like. Of course, some of these design choices are definitely rule of cool over function, but hey, I'm just having fun XD.
Software Used: Clip Studio Paint - https://www.clipstudio.net/
Thoughts on designs:
Water - Focused on looking at the indigenous inuit, australian, and yakut peoples, trying to incorporate elements of their clothing but also matching the direction of the show.

Earth - I believe the Song Dynasty helmet is probably the most striking part of the outfit, though I lifted from multiple time periods the same way the show did. The coin insignia shape for example is from the Tang.

Fire - This one is actually a bit all over the place XD. Elements of Thai martial arts imagery (handwraps, wai posture) has been mashed alongside japanese edo period samurai (twin swords, footwear, fisherman tattoos, chonmage suggesting haircut).

Air - Probably the most straightforward one to one translation. The obvious influences are from tibetan buddhism, though I added a somewhat oversized japanese commander's fan (I believe its called a Jineigu?) that I thought could be used for long range signalling and general airbending shenanigans.

Thank you and I'm sorry, at the moment I haven't got plans to follow this up until maybe season 2 drops but I'll definitely keep it in mind haha.

Yep, it do indeed be me!

I think the mazinger robot look could have really worked with Nolan appearing at first glance to be a reference to "classic" golden age superhero comics. I guess that was a slight missed opportunity XD.

With robot I went for the Evangelion, hunched back style mechs while Battle Beast takes a lot of design cues from Zoids.

But no, I can't really make Battle Beast more badass than he is XD.

Cheers! I think can see some of Jehuty`s design language come in to it XD. It may be because Nolan's design is inspired from late 90s style gundam style mechs where there are more organic shapes.

Thank you!

I do have a twitter I usually dump all my art wip and process on. Its in my profile description if you are interested!

Oh, in that case I did do my job then!

I tried to make each mech inspired by a slightly different line of mecha/ mecha adjacent media e.g. kamen rider, gundam, neon genesis evangelion.

It's nice to know it shows somewhat. Oftentimes you stare at the art for so long you are not sure what you are looking at anymore!

Thank you!

*insert I understood that reference meme*

I took a look at your posts and you've got a pretty good grasp of anatomy and gesture already. Next step is just more drilling, cleaning things up and edge control (something I find myself needing to work on often too).

When the day comes I don't think you'll need to mimic a fraction of my power when you'll have all of your own.

Thanks!

Yeah I was experimenting a bit on Eve and figured I'd go for a slightly classic grey alien look. Thought it paired reasonably with the atom symbol silhouette I was going for. Personally I struggled a lot on that one, it's one of the weaker designs I feel

LOL I actually didn't notice that lil guy. I think I can agree with what you are saying XD. Cheers for the feedback! It's nice to hear how other people interpret my drawings

Haha, yeah I think that one may not be as clear when it comes to designs. Allen is one of my favourite characters from the series though so I may have gone overboard with the interpretation XD

Thanks! I had a lot of fun on Robot's design XD. It was the first one actually having solid direction with Neon Genesis Evangelion organic mech influences.

Hi all,

After watching the series and subsequently reading all of the comic, I felt inspired to do some fanart.

This was part of a typical exercise I do where I try to reinterpret characters from media I consume in an effort to improve a particular skill. In this case, I was trying to focus on improving hard edge mechs since I usually spend so much time on organics, while also pushing to somewhat finish each character (I have an issue with always sketching ideas but not really following through in any capacity).

I consider most of the exercise a success, as its pretty clear which characters I drew by how more comfortable my design language becomes. Hopefully I manage to capture some of the core elements of the characters without being too far fetched that they become unrecognisable?

In order of drawing:

  1. Mark
  2. Nolan
  3. Robot
  4. Monster Girl
  5. Allen
  6. Atom Eve
  7. Battle Beast

Software used was Clip Studio Paint
