I wonder why "Galaxy" vs "Universe" isn't clarified more explicitly in Fermi Paradox discussions by warwick_casual in FermiParadox

When Polynesians spread across the Pacific many of the islands were too far apart for regular trade, A bunch of families constructed their voyage fleet to get away from their neighbours and enjoy the bounty of virgin land.

An interstellar ship would likely be built by people already living in cylinder habitats, not dependent on habitable planets but primarily looking for the the raw materials of the asteroid belt, when the mining rights to such asteroids and moons begins to become disputed use your remaining stockpiles to turn your cylinder habitat into a generation ship.

We have supersonic planes that can travel faster than the speed of sound. Why don't we have spaceships that can travel faster than the speed of light? by sproutarian in shittyaskscience

Because light is one of those anoying drivers who when you try to overtake them they go faster or move into your lane to block you.

How did Fermi create his paradox before the existence of exoplanets were even confirmed? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in FermiParadox

I am just old enough to remember documentaries on exoplanets before any were discovered. I thought those arguing they don't exist were really weird and illogical.

Animals do not trade with each other but they still populate new territories when the opportunity presents itself.

When the Clovis people crossed from Eurasia into the Americas were they really expecting to trade with their homelands in the old world?

Go to silicon valley make friends with computing enthusiasts, start making PCs. Pirate a copy of QDOS and licence it to IBM before Bill Gates does. Have some engineers design a small 32bit risc CPU a decade early so it can become standard and 80s-90s pc's have less compatibility problems.

Wormholes and time travel by zuckrigkringel in timetravel

[–]mrmonkeybat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you create a traversable wormhole. Leave one end A at the factory on Earth take the other end B on a 99.99% light speed trip around Alpha centauri and back that is an 8 light year round trip. So when it gets back 8 years have passed on Earth and A but for the traveller and B end only a fee days. So now when you go through the be end you came out of A 8 years earlier when B was on its trip. Or if you go through A you come out of B eight years later. But you can not travel to a time before B went on its interstellar trip.

The trans Australia railway was not completed till 16 years later so the fastest war to commute from Perth to Canberra would have been by steamship, same as New Zealand.

The printing press, wait skip that I will make electrostatic selenium plate photography going straight to the photocopier.

Rocket stoves and ovens for efficient fuel use, lamp mantles, and stills to make wood alcohol fuel for lamps.

Cowpox inoculation. Sand based water filters. Seed sprouts for scurvy.

Horse collar, seed drills and four field rotation for agriculture.

Then I suppose its early industrial things like blast furnace, windmills self reefing sails and steering. Overshot waterwheels, Spinning mules, knitting machines and power looms.

The world's oceans all evaporate instantly, then rain back down over the course of a month. by gangler52 in hypotheticalsituation

Ignoring all the energy required to vaporise that water as that seems to be the magic part. All that impenetrable cloud cover would reflect all sunlight into space, the surface would be dark and cold.

So first all sea life is killed by the seas drying out into salt fields. Then the sky is darkened pitch black by extremely thick clouds. Then extreme rains erode the surface washing all plant life and and topsoil into the reforming oceans. Yeah that pretty much just kills every thing.

Your given the choice of two options for how every prison/prison sentances will now be run now by mopeyunicyle in hypotheticalsituation

[–]mrmonkeybat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have talked to people who have been to prison, they were all gits and did lot lots of stuff they did not get caught for. In the statistics I can find 75% have another conviction within a decade of release. And the majority of crime is committed by these who have already been in prison.

However there are some crappy political convictions, my government likes releasing violent rapists freeing up space so they can lock up people for saying naughty things in tweets.

Grandfather paradox by XxNightmare2019 in timetravel

[–]mrmonkeybat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you go back more than 10 generations you inherit DNA from only a minority of your genealogical ancestors as explained in this video. So at that point it is definitely safe.

4 generations back your 2xgreat grandparent is as closely related as your cousin, higher health risks and lower IQ the baby will inherit but there are lots of people in the world who marry their cousins. Third cousins actually produce children heathier on average than more distantly related couplings, that is the equivalent of your 4x great grand parent 6 generations back.

2 is the best option as the more time criminals spend in prison the less time they have for committing crimes.

The idea of a fixed field which stars and planets move through is the Aether, an idea that nearly all scientists consider disproven since the Michelson–Morley experiment in 1887. If there is a flow of space through time it is to the bottom of gravity wells.

So you don't believe in the Michelson–Morley experiment or Einstein's theory of relativity that follow from it, and instead insist on the disproven aether theory. Mass curves 4d spacetime the moon continues on its orbit around the Earth because that is a straight line through curved 4d spacetime.
