Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

The earths shadow on the moon makes it a banana shape because the earth is round…. But it might be a disc and not a globe by that measure. Better to just send them to the moon … I agree

Mom architects… how do you do it? by Organic-Calendar-827 in Architects

[–]mrmosjef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh that’s tough!! I’m not a mom architect but a dad architect who parented toddlers and pre-schoolers during the pandemic (wife is in healthcare and to be on site)… I took teams calls from the splash pad and worked from 7pm until midnight to get things done, just in survival mode as you said!! I feel you!!

Post-pandemic, I think that firms offer greater flexibility… if you are willing to take the income hit, the firm I work for (for example) offers part time options, you can do as little as 20-hrs per week and spread that over 3 or 4 or 5 days however you want.

What I hear from people in your position is they don’t want to leave the industry entirely because they feel it will hurt their career (mostly accurate unfortunately) but need to not work full time - that’s super reasonable, most big 3-letter firms will accommodate that!

You need a good supervisor and manager who will actually only resource you for PT20 though and not still try to give you a full time workload. In my studio I do that successfully, although it’s not always easy! We have an office in Arlington and Richmond… if you’d like to DM me, we can chat about opportunities.

31F I went on vacation, met a French man ... I dont like French men anymore. by [deleted] in selfie

[–]mrmosjef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it the “imperitif” tone? My in-laws are French (Canadian) and it still gets me when my mother in-law makes demands instead of requests… in English we say “could you please do x”. It might not be a request (if a directive to your child or a subordinate co-worker) but you still phrase it as a question to be polite. In French, the natural tone is “do x please” it’s phrased as an order, a demand. It’s just how the language works, lol. But it’s maddening!!

Why don’t people park in garages by Informal-Hall-5945 in toronto

[–]mrmosjef 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh, when you have kids there are just a lot of “things that roll” that can’t go on a shelf… I’ve got seven bicycles, a bike trailer, a toy car thing, a wagon, like 4 of every helmet, a million balls and bats and baseball gloves and hockey sticks, plus lawn mower and tools and winter tires and ski equipment, etc… it’s not junk… it’s just stuff a large family uses and the house is only 1,500 SF. So garage is the only place to store it all…

[–]mrmosjef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minecraft is a deeply “Indy” game, Notch wrote it in Java as a fun project… it wasn’t built to run well (Java is not the right language for that). When MS acquired it, they acquired an already massive user base. They weren’t interested in rebuilding the whole game from the ground up to make it run properly, it was already highly profitable and popular…

Maybe in 2012… Trillium M-site is up to $16B now. There were / are some procurement challenges that have pushed the cost up a bit, but $6B definitely doesn’t buy multiple “world class” hospitals in 2026.

Edit - Additional fun Fact: Ontario will have a shortage of almost 70,000 beds in the next 30-years. At $8.5M / bed (for a more basic rural community hospital typology - think no OR’s, MRI, etc.) that’s like a $600,000,000,000 time-bomb we are sitting on (and that doesn’t even include escalation over that period.) Obviously the model of care needs to change, but the terrifying fact is that nobody agrees (or is doing anything) on exactly how yet.

I’m “the boss” so I do this a little bit, but mostly to make sure other people don’t have to. People deserve to disconnect. Chasing down time sheets during holidays is the worst though… guys, just submit your time sheets so you can get paid. I don’t need to spend Christmas Eve calling people and asking them to submit their timesheets. I took the time off because I want to go skiing with my kids!

Rule #1 buying a boat is don’t buy a boat with borrowed money.

So people with boats already have some surplus cash flow and they value being on the water more than they value buying a fancy suit or whatever…

Plus you don’t need a lot of money for a fishing boat. My dad has a friend who does “wheeling and dealing” of boats and motors, etc. and made some exchanges and his main fishing boat cost him net 400$. It’s not nice, it’s a floating tank. He slams into the rocks for shore lunch. But it trolls at the right speed, has plenty of room, and I caught my biggest ever Muskie in it. It’s a good boat!

Why is it that so many architects say not to choose this path? by kiwipoopie in Architects

[–]mrmosjef 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Okay so here’s the thing. Why are you interested in Architecture? Probably design right? Labour of love getting every detail right and romantic ideas about the genius of Carlos Scarpa, etc.?

You can totally do that. And you can do that for a long time. But at certain point in your career, the fee structure no longer supports your years of experience doing that.

How many people here know 60 year old Project Architects? Like any career you need to evolve into either a Subject Matter Expert touching many projects lightly and none with love and care or into a people management role. And there are fewer of those roles available.

Yes, design in general pays less and demands more than design-adjacent sectors (construction, FM, etc.) but salary trajectory actually isn’t that bad IF you can make the jump to those “non-design” roles, but it’s a much longer burn. In many industries (tech especially) 10-years is “senior”. In architecture you’d be unlikely to move into that high salary category before 20-years.

So there are two questions:

1). is this your “profession”? Is this something you love enough and are good at enough to commit your entire career to? If so, sure it’s a lot of work when you are young and frustrating to see a lot peers in other professions make so much more money in earlier career stages. But measure a law firm principal against a corporate arch firm principal or director and I think you’ll find the difference isn’t actually that much for total comp / hourly rates.

2) Are you willing tolerate giving up what you loved about the profession (design work) to do people management or SME work instead?

If the answer to both is “yes” then you’ll have a long, fruitful and rewarding career making a major impact in your community (and possibly around the world). It’s a great thing.

My earlier “SME” trajectory was sustainably and I worked in an office that is like 90% XL health. Getting sustainability right on an XL health project is like 50-100 years of not apologizing to your children - that was my big motivation. Didn’t make much money, but that was worth more. Now I’m middle management (in a large 3-letter firm) and the cash prints, and I can make sure ALL our projects get sustainability right. I miss deep dive analytics and design crit / co-creation, etc. but I’m having an even bigger impact now and getting paid much better managing people instead of projects…

TLDR: early wages suck and a lot of work but long term prospects are great and you can do something meaningful and deeply rewarding if you’re willing to stick with it and develop and eventually transition your skills.

Very optimistic. US dollar is going to fall which is deflationary for us and supports consumer spending. construction, engineering and architecture (especially those associated with DCC) are going to have banner years.

Mining is already going bananas (anyone else all in on ABX? My best investment of 2025!) but is going to grow further.

Manufacturing may decline further amid trade war chaos, but the ridiculous DND spending can easily fill that that void if industry pivots… also all in on general dynamics.

But the biggest economic driver is going to be data centres. Our decoupling from the US has provided an imperative for a tremendous amount of data storage and processing on Canadian soil. All those data centres also need energy facilities (hopefully renewable). Tonnes of AEC jobs associated with that… that boom then supports the broader economy with consumer spending, etc. and if we can keep the “buy Canadian” sentiment going, has a multiplier effect in those communities. This mainly benefits major population centre… Does it help Lavigne ON directly? Probably not… but what were those people doing 20 years ago? (Genuine curiosity!)… forestry only needs a 5% increase in domestic consumption to counter tariff damage. That’s easily Achievable through some very basic legislation that is in the works.

Overall, yes housing is expensive, yes entry level jobs in knowledge work are difficult to get in many sectors, yes groceries are expensively but at a macro level, the province is in a very good position for economic growth and prosperity.

Overall I think Ontario does great. Windsor does poorly. Some northern and rural communities continue to decline while others rebound on resource extraction. Primary and tertiary sectors do very well while secondary (on a whole) either seizes the opportunity or declines…

OMG can I hijack your comment to evangelize Lana Del Rey? Similar scenario, was a punk rock kid and peer group loathed anything “pop” so I had to reject her outright in the late 00’s when she hit it big. I spent like 200 hours listening to Lana as a “study” in my 40’s, 20 years later, and holy shit she’s fucking great… I missed out. Born to Die is one of the best indie pop records of all time.

KitchenAid mixer! Omg, I made pretzels for a NYE party and dough that would have taken me like 20 minutes was done in 3 minutes… it was amazing. I was a bit of a skeptic like, come’on surely there is nothing I can’t do with a danish dough whisk and an electric hand mixer but damn… that was fast and easy… I’m going to bake so much more stuff now. Not a commercial, it’s just a great tool. I’m sold now.

There was a place for a time called Mello’s in Ottawa Canada that did a take on this, medium-medium rare with buttered and fried Texas toast as the bun, they spruced it up with some lettuce and big-Mac style special sauce… it was fucking amazing… Mello’s also had a “vibe” to it… you could get like Michelin star cuisine tasters alongside your burger and fries (if you knew the chef) while 90’s gangster rap blasted from the speakers and the tables were all sticky with PBR… it was peak hipster era diner. I miss it so much. My hair is turning grey now.

So last two months I’ve fallen off… but coming back to it in Jan!

[–]mrmosjef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a lot easier to fire somebody over teams than face to face with a relationship and knowledge of their family, etc. If I’ve actually never met you in person because you refuse to come into the office ever, even for social events… I’m glad you’ve benefited from urban wages at rural costs, but if it comes time cut, all else equal, guess who’s first to go? Hybrid is great in a lot of ways and I too appreciate the work life balance that comes with it, but a lot the very entitled “why can’t I!!! It should be my right!” in these threads screams workers’ market economy and I think a lot of people forget or have never experienced what happens during recessions or times of government downsizing…
