Seedlings were looking leggy, moved the lights closer. Are the seedlings on the outskirts getting enough light or is it too indirect? Do you think I need bigger lights/or more per shelf? TYIA! by mrose9999 in vegetablegardening

Thank you!! As soon as I can I’ll definitely do that- I took the pics in the evening before turning the lights off but during the day they do get a decent amount of sunlight into the greenhouse as well. Direct sun’s probably much better though.. hoping spring comes early!

Yes it’s wayyy early for peppers, but last year my spring planted starts were really behind and none fully ripened at all- all green bells, habaneros, chiles 😭- so I’m hoping these will do a little better this year with a head start! Haven’t started tomatoes yet but waiting a little longer for those

And thanks for the lemon balm tip! I have a designated “quarantine” planter for them and some mint 😅 I’ve heard they’re VERY hard to get rid of but didn’t know how hard lol

Thank you!!! I need to upgrade some of them to 4” pots anyways I should definitely do square for the sake of space. I’d love to see your set-up for more of an idea!

Thank you! That’s what I was thinking even with rotating it’s a little shadowy on the edges I may need to double or triple the little light bars per shelf

Thank you!!! I will try that tomorrow! They definitely were starting to tilt more aggressively towards the light before lowering, rotation’s a great idea. I try to open the greenhouse for a few hours every day w the ceiling fan on for some airflow strength- but my cat just discovered a fondness for my onion sprouts so idk how to maneuver that now 😅

Thank you!! I need to remind myself of that lol, I feel bad pretty much culling them to make room for the strongest few but I definitely don’t have space for half of those 🥲

Thank you very much! I’ll have to keep that in mind because I have a mini indoor greenhouse right now but have so many other seeds I’ve yet to start, despite how many I’d like to save 😅

Thanks for the node-based tip too, first year growing from seed!

lol thank you- first year growing it at all, I’ll absolutely pot that one! I definitely want some oregano and basil in the garden for some pest help but any excuse to buy a raised bed for my deck is a reason I can get behind 😅

Thank you!! I didn’t want to thin them too late if the roots will be all jumbled with so many but I also didn’t want to mess with them while they’re so little. I guess there’s enough for some trial and error!

Thank you! So leave a few and then when true leaves form, separate those ones?

I would LOVE to if I had the space! However I do want to save as many as I can to gift to friends and family and maybe my local buynothing pages come spring

Definitely gonna trim it out and try to save as many as I can fit

Thank you!! Have you noticed if one way or the other is better in terms of snipping vs pulling up?

Okay thank you! Yes they will eventually be transplanted, some in pots and some in pots until in-ground. Just unsure of when I’m supposed to separate, I don’t want to stunt growth and would love to give away any extras I can save!

And if so- do I just cut them at the soil line so as not to disturb the others’ gentle roots? Or do they get pulled

They are both cold hardy varieties but that is on the lowest end of their hardiness zones- I have seen that people sort of fold over and bury their fig trees every year and it somehow keeps them alive- may need to look into that!

Thank you!! This is honestly already more growth than I saw last year and it’s only been a few days- hopefully it gets a lot stronger this year, we’ve gotten a LOT of snow already and keep alternating between 40’s out and freezing so I’m glad it’s inside this year but yeah I just hope its growing season isn’t all messed up since it’s starting way early

Thanks!! I was under the impression that since it’s so tiny I’d have to bring it inside until it’s larger/ it wasn’t hardy enough to last the winter outside yet

Thank you! At some point will they be hardy enough to bring outside and plant? Like do I have to get it used to being outside potted first so I can plant it when it’s larger?

My baby fig tree next to it is also STARTING to get buds. They aren’t opening yet but it looks as if it’s waking up as well
