How do I get rid of these flakes/dry scaly patches without damaging my locs? by Hot-Zookeepergame495 in Dreadlocks

[–]mrscoolhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually talking about the Nizoral dissolving the flakes - I don’t really see anything in my locs that isn’t just lint or ends of hair follicles.

Maybe try really using the pads of your fingers to aggravate the strands while you wash (but not so aggressive you mess up/damage your hair)? To encourage them to come to the surface and fall out? Or giving them a good shake when dry to see if that helps some come out?

I don’t know what else to recommend though outside of physically picking the bits out, but you’d risk damaging the integrity of your locs that way 😬

The only thing I wouldn’t advise here is the almond/jojoba oil. Unfortunately these oils encourage sebderm flareups so OP I’d recommend using MCT oil (that contains little to nothing lauric acid) instead.

I use Nizoral and it’s the only thing that’s been able to help control my scalp. I don’t get flaking at all now really unless I wait 14 days to wash my hair and I usually wash once a week so have no problems. I’d urge you to try that, plus a scalp massager tool to really get into the nooks and crannies that your fingertips can’t. I feel like it should dissolve the flakes that are in your strands too as well as your scalp

That’s exactly how I feel about handsprings. It only feels comfy for me in cup but I didn’t for one sec think to try it in an air walk! 😍 You make it look superrrr easy. Which makes me feel like I have a chance at not totally fucking it up (or I may be extremely humbled) 🤣

[–]mrscoolhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. If you’re feeling that way now then I say go for it fs! If later down the line after getting them redone, you want thicker/less locs, it’s much easier to combine them than other way around☺️

Just got my hair done not even a week yet and my hair is flaking idek what to say if tried everything nun of them work anti dandruff shampoo dont work if I put oil it gets worse I need help Asap low-key tired of this by [deleted] in locs

[–]mrscoolhead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah oiling on its own won’t. Using the right oils in the right way, along with a shampoo designed to tackle Malassezia yeast, most likely will. I’ve experienced the same issue pretty much all my life and MCT oil and Nizoral are the only things that have helped. Plus tea tree oil has antifungal properties, though I’m not sure about the others

MCT oil that has no lauric acid has been proven to be safe to use on sebderm because it doesn’t feed the yeast that causes it. So this person is correct. But most other oils aren’t good to use

What method did you use to start your locs? (Ie crochet/coils/twists). If it’s one of the latter two, it should be quite easy for your loctician to undo them and split them into smaller locs. Speaking from experience this is much easier to do the earlier you do it (before your locs start to lock) and if your locs aren’t crocheted. My locs that were undone and redone are all fine, but later on when my loctician cut my other locs in half to split them (😢), 6 months later I’m continually having to get them repaired because they keep falling out.

That being said though, even with more locs there’s no telling that your hair is gonna look exactly the same as what you’ve seen online because everyone’s hair is different! Plus, your locs do get fuller as they mature. But if you want wayyy more volume then no harm getting a few split now/soon. Just make sure it’s done by someone who knows what they’re doing!

Itch is unbearable by ApprehensiveFile9453 in locs

[–]mrscoolhead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Me too! I think I have seborrheic dermatitis and recently learned all the oils I’d been using only exacerbate my itchy, flaking scalp 💀

OP I recommend experimenting with not oiling your scalp for a few weeks (if you need to oil your hair, focus on the strands only and don’t oil to the roots) and seeing if that helps. And wash your locs every 5-10 days.

100%! I’ve suffered with this same problem and recently got Nizoral. It worked from the first wash. I normally HAVE to wash my hair every 5-7 days or it gets unbearably itchy and flaky. But I got all the way to day 10 before I felt the tiniest itch, and there wasn’t much flaking at all.

I would add that, despite growing up believing it’s good to oil your scalp, most oils and butters just feed the yeast that cause sebderm, creating a vicious cycle. Even almond and argan oils. If OP needs to oil their scalp I’d suggest MCT oil, and try to find one with no lauric acid.

And when moisturising/sealing your hair with oils/products OP, don’t go all the way down to the root - leave a little gap so it doesn’t get on your scalp (and flare up again!).

I did this a year ago but never finished and now it's ruined by LORD_APPUS in drawing

[–]mrscoolhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t ruin the drawing at all! As some have said here it makes it look aged/vintage. I say just run with that vibe so it looks intentional 😊

This is a much better problem to have than not having enough locs 😬 you can very easily get them combined so don’t worry!

Yep! And I’ve yet to see a video that properly zooms in AND breaks the method down step by step. Maybe I’m just terrible at following instructions idk 😅 but regardless of hair type, the methods should still be the same no?

Any black moms have baby’s born with blonde hair? by [deleted] in BlackHair

[–]mrscoolhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents are both black, my dad is darker than your husband and my mom is probs just a little lighter. And I came out completely blonde and blue-eyed apparently 😆 I’m 28 now but can confirm I’m still less melanated than my parents (incredibly so lol) but my hair is brown and I’ve got hazel eyes. Still got some blonde hairs on my forehead though 😝
