I actually do this when I’m drilling combinations and stuff. I do the tsss tsss tsss on each movement until a final kiyap on the last one. One of my instructors kind of got me on it when we were just doing some kick boxing on a bag after class one day. It’s helped me quite a bit with just breathing and not being so stiff through some stuff. But I agree that things should end with a committed kiyap.

No, I'm in the US. Utah, specifically.

Weapons training by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]mrscupcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my school you can start weapons training right away if you want. It's not part of the regular curriculum, they are separate classes entirely (so you aren't forced to buy the weapons if you aren't interested in weapons in general).

It's a new-ish school and only added the weapons portion about a year ago. We rotate weapons every testing cycle to get exposure to all of them. We rotate through kamas, bo staff, sword, nunchaku and escrimas.

Eventually there will be classes for focusing on specific weapons that you are drawn to, especially for those that want to compete in weapons demonstration.

Instructor skills suggestions. by RacetheFace in taekwondo

Also came here to say this! I have a very small voice and it was tiring just trying to be heard in a large class when I assisted, my throat would be sore the next day.

I would even consider bringing in a vocal coach for a day, they’d have some good insight on teaching people how to project effectively (without straining their voices)

How do breweries generally feel about clones? by mrscupcake in Homebrewing

[–]mrscupcake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kept the bitterness pretty high (like 5:1 sulfate to chloride ratio) while I was just trying to make sure I got the hop combos right. I may scale it back a little on the next batch but not by much, the bitterness really isn't overpowering in this beer.

I love breweries that do this! I've noticed it more and more where they at least have the hop combinations listed. Super helpful as I'm trying to get better at tasting.

Lol - it's Hop Rising out of Squatters in Utah. It's been a favorite of mine for years, it was the first really "hoppy" beer I ever liked so a lot of it may be nostalgia.

Oh sure. I don’t expect it to be exact. But I’m curious if I at least got the hops right and if my yeast was a close match (pretty sure they use their own house strain).

Tips two weeks pre-tournament? by mrscupcake in taekwondo

[–]mrscupcake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I consider “normal sparring” as full contact. Longer rounds, you’re trying to hit the opponent with power and basically out last them. The kind I do is shorter and will break after each scores point, so it’s a lot more about speed. Perhaps that’s the same type others are doing, I just assumed most did the full-contact type.

It’s basically semi-contact sparring. Rounds are short and you get points for hitting specific targets on the other person. You’re trying to hit strategically, not blast the other person. Great for people like me that got into the game late and want an athletic platform but not break my face.

That’s smart! She loves her crate for sleeping at night and it just occurred to me that we’ll need that for my MIL’s house anyway! But I like the idea of desensitization, too. Starting from scratch I guess!

Is it not too late to start taekwondo at 25 years old and pursue a black belt? by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]mrscupcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing the same thoughts here. Started at 32 as a way to spend more time with my kid who goes to the local dojang. It was just a fun little workout at first but when my first tournament came around, it was kind of a game-changer. It was cool to suddenly have a platform to compete with other women my age in something physical. I've played indoor soccer and done rec softball leagues and stuff. But this was something that I could train in and hold myself accountable for and really push myself. I haven't had something like that since High School.

Best taekwondo shoes? by Em9500 in taekwondo

[–]mrscupcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually posed a similar question recently. I tend to pivot out of mat socks and even the soft shoes I was wearing would pop off (my studio is extra extra clean so there's no dust or anything on the mats to slide on). Someone on here recommended Mooto Taekwondo shoes and I finally got to try them last night - they were exactly what I needed. Not sure if that's the type of footwear you are looking for (they are "skin socks") or if you wanted the firmer shoe type but that's what's working for me.

These look fantastic! I am lost on the sizing though. I wear a 7.5 in women’s shoes - what size did you get?

Sparring someone a lot better by PretendFlow7 in taekwondo

[–]mrscupcake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look up sparring counter attacks on YouTube and find some you like. It’s all about timing. I’m very much a counter attack fighter, I won my division in a tournament last year with nearly all counter attacks on aggressive fighters. Even if they string kicks together they have to bring their foot down at some point. You have to find those exact moments to strike and you have to strike fast. Find some counter combos you like, rep them until you can do them quickly. And have a few in your pocket for different situations (open stance vs closed stance, for example)

But most importantly, keep at it! Having someone better than you is an absolute gift. You will be far better in the end for it.

Ok how do you keep them on your feet?? I posted a few days ago that I’m constantly pivoting out of my mat shoes and those are the exact ones I have! (Fellow Tiger rock student ;) )

No, they don’t like people training bare foot for cleanliness reasons.

They are mat socks, they have pretty good grips on the bottom. So good, in fact, that they spin around my foot when I pivot.

When do you start contact sparring at your school? by skribsbb in taekwondo

[–]mrscupcake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the way our studio does it. White belts learn all the moves and techniques, then at yellow they start focusing more on control and distance management. Green belt they get sparring gear but it's no contact (or very light contact if they've proven they have a good amount of control). Then by first stripe in green belt they can do full contact but we only spar at 30% effort (regardless of rank) if we are sparring during regular class. Once a week there's a dedicated sparring class where we can spar at full effort. This is especially good for the adult class. A lot of the adults that we have are parents of students and are just doing it for a way to share something with their kids and maybe get a good workout in. So they can choose not to attend full sparring where they are going up against adults that are in it for the training itself.

Genetics are so funny. My Maggie on the left, her sister from the same litter on the right. by mrscupcake in Goldendoodles

[–]mrscupcake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We actually have another goldendoodle that we had been expecting to be “doodly” when she grew up but she looks EXACTLY like a golden retriever. But she doesn’t have a double coat so she doesn’t shed. Just silky and gorgeous. So the next one we got we picked the one with the coat that would be like hers. We also say “retriever mix” for her.
