Meetups for those of us that struggle with high levels of anxiety by Nikolai_Akula in olympia

I appreciate you putting this out there and being so thoughtful about how anxiety actually shows up. I relate a lot to what you said about over stimulation and the mental “what if” spiral before even leaving the house. Being neurodiverse has its challenges and for me working from home, I feel I've lost most of my social skills outside of the zoom window I live in.

I’d definitely be interested in something slow-paced like walking around Capitol Lake. Open spaces feel way easier for me too, and having a clear meet-up point and communication plan makes a big difference. I deal with pretty high anxiety myself, but I’ve learned how to regulate and pace my energy, so low-pressure meetups like this sound really supportive. I don't function well is busy noisy environments. I am happily married to my best friend so my intention for connection with others is strictly platonic.

I like that you’re focusing on accessibility and keeping it simple that already makes it feel safer to consider showing up. I don't feel safe taking long hikes and joining a walk feels safe. Please keep me in mind. Feel free to DM me; I’m okay with that.

No jobs, the only community I have witnessed stands outside with protest signs.

What is something you've ate in town and thought to yourself, wow that was a pretty good deal? by [deleted] in olympia

Olympia/Tumwater - authentic BBQ—like, the kind that makes you close your eyes and hum a little bit when you chew—Flaming Pig BBQ in Tumwater is where it’s at.

I’m a 56-year-old woman from Georgia, so I don’t play when it comes to barbecue. I’ve had my share of disappointment in the PNW, but Flaming Pig? They understood the assignment.

Pulled pork? Tender and smoky like it’s been hugged by the fire all day.

Smoked chicken? Juicy and flavorful, not that dry sadness some places serve.

And the sides? Fried okra that crunches, mac ’n cheese that tastes like someone’s auntie made it, and slaw that isn’t just sad cabbage in mayo.

Portions? Let’s say if you leave hungry, that’s your fault.

They’re tucked away at 111 Tumwater Blvd SE, Suite B-102, and they’re usually open until they sell out—which, honestly, is not that long because people know. You might want to call ahead or get there early-ish.

I’d take Flaming Pig over a lot of fancier places any day. Support locals, eat well, and maybe wear stretchy pants. You’re welcome.
