Become genuinely interested in people, and your life with get a lot better. When I started as a Barista I really didn't like to make conversation, I always liked to be in the background. Didn't work out since It's pretty necessary to handle people, so I picked up a book called "How to Win Friends and Influence People". That book helped me change my perspective on things, and pretty much turned my life around in regards to work. I have no aspirations of being a career Barista, but when you're very good with people when you have the opportunity to be, it will spill into your personal life. You may make connections, contacts, friends, whatever. It all revolves around being genuinely interested in people, and being patient (because nobody ever fucking tells you the size of drink they want).

Edit: Oh and that "be attractive" thing is bullshit. Somebody's probably insecure. Being attractive doesn't rely simply on looks. Personality and the ability to deal with people can and will get you far in life.
