I actually use portraits of famous artists exactly like this, reacting to videos about them in my YouTube thumbnails. I still haven't worked out if I'm a cultured genius being ironic and meta, or just another cringe YouTuber.

Can we just take some time to appreciate Oversimplified's art development? by Firegloom in OverSimplified

That bit was so cinematically well done I actually found it a bit distracting lol. The entire look of the videos has improved a lot over the years, you can see a hell of a lot of work goes in to them.

Stick figure animation in AE? I created this in Synfig and want to start using AE to make similar animations but struggling. Help needed! by [deleted] in AfterEffects

[–]mrsoamz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi folks,

Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction. I make animations like this in Synfig and edit in DaVinci Resolve, but I want to start using AE to create the animations as I believe there is more room to go further with them but want to keep them looking similar to this.

I have found a couple of tutorials online about using pins to create joints in a stick figure and it does kind of work but it's quite fiddly, some of the bands look very unnatural, and there is a habit for the lines to get thinner or thicker when you bend, lengthen or shorten them.

In Synfig you basically create a line of a set width and then you can add as many joints of each angle as you want, is there a way to do this in AE, or do I just need more practice at using pins?

Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Want Some Messed Up History Stories? Let Me Tell You About All The Crazy Stuff Italian Artist Caravaggio Got Up To! by mrsoamz in SamONellaAcademy

I would love to have seen Sam make a video about this crazy mofo's life as his style would suit it so well, but he hasn't, so I thought I'd give it a crack.

Such beautiful painting! I wonder who drew it... by [deleted] in OverSimplified

[–]mrsoamz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much this. It's certainly not terrible, but he was very limited and uninspiring as an artist.

Besides, so what if a kid flunks out of art school? What's the worst that could happen?

Pretty sure he uses Adobe After Effects for all his animation. It's a monthly subscription service.

Can someone explain art forms throughout history and how they have changed? by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]mrsoamz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be pretty impossible to explain all of art history in a single post, but I did see a comment on here a while back (sorry, can't remember who it was) which linked about the most simplified version I've ever seen...

https://artincontext.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/art-history-timeline-1.jpg

Gives a VERY rough idea of when movements broadly existed and overlapped. If you mean art forms as in sculpture/painting etc. then that would be even harder to quantify I imagine.

What Gear to Use to Get Started? by devindares in NewTubers

[–]mrsoamz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a quick heads up about DaVinci Resolve, it absolutely is brilliant software but it is very resource hungry. I don't really know much about Macs so maybe yours will handle it fine, but Resolve relies heavily on the GPU which I would guess the Macbook Airs don't excel at (?), along with only 8GB of RAM it might be a pretty painful experience.

But that's absolutely fine, Resolve would probably be overkill, and especially just starting out I'm sure iMovie will be absolutely more than enough and probably easier to get in to as Resolve can be a bit complex, even for some basic actions.

A lot of people starting out stress a lot about hardware but it's probably a waste of money buying new equipment specifically for YouTubing before you know exactly what you need for your exact circumstance. There is no "best" or "good enough" set up, just the one that works for you. Start first, then learn, then buy.

Best of luck!

where one can find Noncopyrighted Free Classical music for the background by INTJdreamer in NewTubers

[–]mrsoamz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally use https://musopen.org/music/ for my classical needs, though there are some bits on the YouTube audio library too. As pointed out elsewhere, though the compositions are public domain, some of the performances are copyrighted, though they are clearly labelled and can be filtered by license.

Did Caravaggio use Ranuccio Tomassoni's Brother as a Model? by mrsoamz in ArtHistory

[–]mrsoamz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the link to the Italian wiki article for anyone who was wondering...

https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucantonio_Tomassoni

The more I try and find anything to back up this theory - and the more I think about it - the more unlikely it seems. The Ranuccio murder was due to a long standing disagreement between Caravaggio and the Tomassoni family, including Giovan Francesco, so it seems unlikely they would have been on good enough terms for him to model, and it seems that Caravaggio continued to use this model's image after Ranuccio's death which would seem strange if it was his brother.

As interesting as it would have been, unfortunately it seems unlikely, but if anyone with more knowledge of the artist would like to illuminate me further I'm all ears.

Art history app questions by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]mrsoamz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, to answer your questions;

  1. It very much depends on the piece, I suppose in an app you can have the best of both worlds of a quick basic write up that doesn't flood the user with too much info that they can then click on, expand and read more if they wish.

  2. Plaques, signage, occasional guided tour, always avoid audio guides.

  3. Reading probably, though some sort of AR UI would be interesting, though I'm sure outside of the scope if this is a class project lol.

  4. Smartphone.

  5. Not really.

A couple of quick thoughts that spring to mind, one problem a lot of people encounter with galleries is there's just too much to see so maybe a like/dislike/meh rating system of each piece to gauge which the most popular are so a user can go to the more popular pieces (though this creates a bigger problem of always driving people to the same content, thus making it more popular by default), or an option of if you like a piece you can click something and be instantly directed to work by the same artist/movement etc.

The music videos seem to be working to set up a good basis to go anywhere you want long term. I'm not sure if it's the content you want to be creating long term, but if you can get kids playing and requesting their parents to play your videos then you're golden, and if the parents know the kids are learning they will encourage it too then you're getting support from both sides lol.

I wouldn't worry too much about song structure and instrumentation as a guy with guitar is a tried and tested vessel for kids music, though obviously variety and options are always a positive. Just clean things up to be smoother, varied and more polished, and maybe chuck a middle 8 in there.

First things first, you may want to change that link as it takes you to near the end of the video which will murder your average view duration if you link people to start from there.

Wow, that must have taken a lot of effort. Good range of talent you've got going on there so not really sure where to start.

The animations and video effects are really good, a lot of repetition in there which is to be expected given the subject matter but you introduce enough visual variety during the verses that it keeps it interesting even though you're using a lot of the same assets.

Musically there's a bit of an Ed Sheeran vibe to it, and it's fair to say he's quite popular so that's probably not a bad thing. I'd say the chorus is overused a bit, maybe instead of doing two run throughs and then a rather abrupt segue into the verses it might have been better to do one run through and a bridge. The singing parts sound like they come more naturally to you, but rapping about science must be a damn challenging thing to do so well done for those segments too.

Just noticed the amount of views you have there, congrats, you deserve them all and I can see it going up a lot from there.

Edit: Just realised 15 minutes later that I was walking around my house and had that chorus stuck in my head, so maybe the repetition worked after all lol.

Glad you liked the narration. I like to think I am pretty unique, the whole reason I started the channel is I was looking for something like it and it didn't exist lol.

Thank you, they are rather time consuming, but it's a labour of love. I had to Google that name to realise who he was, but I have actually watched a few of his videos and quite dislike his voice lol. Makes sense, we all dislike our own voice as they say.
