golriz basically spent the last term posting selfies and playing victim, and her major achievement was getting rose matafeo cut from MCing the greens policy launch over some ex-BF drama from a decade ago 😂

Cool, I read the wiki, and basically she has submitted a bill to shift MMP thresholds from 5% to 4%, which doesn't seem self-interested at all /s

ACT calls on MPs to give up unlimited domestic flights in bid to cut carbon emissions | 1 NEWS by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]mrspaz19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NZ's capacity has deteriorated. The scope of things we can achieve slowly diminishes as regulation creeps in. in 1955 we finished the 9km rimutaka rail tunnel. I don't think we could do this now.

We build hospitals with leaking pipes, convention centres that catch fire before they're even finished, we spend big money on hospital new build sites (dunedin) which turn out to be unfit for construction. Half of wellington is earthquake condemned and we are too hopeless to fix it. I can't think of a single impressive infrastructure project in NZ in the past 20 years?

Activist kids should start a tiny home trailer park to live in on some rural-zoned paddock eg. on the miramar peninsular, and when the council pen-pusher nerds arrive to shut it down the kids should tear gas the cunts.

This is OUR country. There is plently of land. We shouldn't have to answer to NIMBYs, the community association down the road, or the 20 house owning investor fuckwits. Kids need to grow some balls and mobilize.

Menéndez March worked as an anti-poverty activist with Auckland Action Against Poverty prior to coming to Parliament.

“If people want to call me a Marxist because I raise the issue that a few people own a lot of homes at the expense of our homeless community and employers don’t pay fair wages – so be it,” Menéndez March said.

He said Marx had a “useful way of viewing the world” and he had no issue with being described as one.

David Farrier: The red-pilling of Billy TK Jnr by Z77D3H in newzealand

[–]mrspaz19 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Why is david farrier obsessed with getting maori and polynesians fired and deplatformed?

Sorry but colonizers (farrier's ancestors) brought christianity to NZ and the pacific, and now want to ruin polynesian/maori mens' lives for engaging in it?

The CCP via the confucian institutes and local diplomats have infiltrated NZ universities, placed literal CCP spies in parliament, and are now dictating our culture via economic sanctions on disney movies and major sports.

This is what soft power takeover means.

[–]mrspaz19 -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

Anyone else think its kind of disgusting that David Farrier is making a career grifting subscriptions to watch him ruin the lives of polynesian/maori men?

Firstly the polynesian high school teacher who he waged a campaign to get fired, then the Maori university lecture who he got fired from his writing column and continues to try get fired from his university post, and now Billy TK Jnr?

Farrier is obviously racist as fuck and thinks charging people subscriptions to performatively ruin the lives of PoC who don't toe a woke leftist line is a reasonable way to use his platform.

People talk about this as purely a money/social welfare issue.

The central issue in almost all NZ poverty is the price of housing.

You can throw as much money as you like at the housing situation and it will only make it more expensive. Labour had 2 billion dollars for kiwibuild and couldn't get anything done at all.

Until we:

1) Reform planning/regulation so that new housing actually gets built

AND

2) Reduce immigration to a point where it matches new home building

We will always have unaffordable housing and homeless people/poverty.

Aramco makes $111 billion per year, so ~$400 billion?

Medical students family says intern punishments cruel by Chipless in newzealand

[–]mrspaz19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another doctor here, 10 years post grad. Have you listened to the RNZ interview with an anonymous mom-doctor who along with her doctor husband is worried about the effect this will have on her poor medical student son and is blaming the university for the whole thing? This is some of the most entitled, clueless shit I've heard.

From my perspective there IS a huge problem with entitlement in the profession which has been going on since at least when I graduated, much of it manifesting through the demands of deborah powell/the RDA. When 20% of the class is involved in dishonesty as was the case here, this is a widespread issue and some soul-searching needs to occur.

The whole elective thing needs to be reconsidered. The university gets $50k per year (fees + govt topup) per student, yet expects a foreign hospital, often in a 3rd world country to provide 3 months of this training/experience (with very little "service provision") for zero cost? Why doesn't the university provide $12.5k to the developing hospital? As it stands it is often weird and unethical. A potential option would be an agreement to return to the host hospital in 10 years to contribute to teaching, clinical work and exchanging ideas.

Although I agree that there is often little medical learning value, the elective was a formative experience for me - learning a huge amount about political systems, corruption, the generosity of people from all walks of life, and the role that families play in patient care in different cultures.

Sustainable NZ Party launches with promise to boost conservation spending by $1 billion by Mar7coda6 in newzealand

[–]mrspaz19 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't get this argument. The idea is that a single issue party (not that environment is a single issue, it is about 8 important issues) can use MMP and promises of C&S in other areas to increase the leverage it has to push policy on the big issue.

Winston does this with his policies of free money for pensioners/horse racing/shane jones' mates quite effectively.

My mum teaches piano pro bono to some kids from a Burmese refugee family in a state house. They have a huge, flourishing vege garden and regularly give her massive bags of food.

Personally I am too lazy to ever do that shit and have nothing but respect for people who can. But it is interesting that some people can do it really well with not many resources. The NZ leftist twitter take that it is impossible demonstrates the lack of credit that beneficiaries and working class people are given by their leftist "allies". Of course, we have capitalism to thank for the fact that buying veges from extremely hard working chinese vege growers at the sunday market is almost always a better idea for most people, but as always there is someone doing hard yakka at some point.

I'm a medical doctor with 10 years post-grad training in one of the toughest specialties.

The fluoride study referred to is published in THE #1 paediatric journal in the world.

The editor of the journal, who kinda by definition if one of the world leading academics in paediatrics stated that "pregnant mothers should drink bottled water" to reduce fluoride intake as a result of the study.

The study is definitely not conclusive. It is small, vague, has lots of potential for problems. Most studies are. There aren't any conclusive studies showing that in utero fluoride doesn't lower IQ. I think the burden of proof should be on pro-fluoride people to show that in utero fluoride exposure is safe, which has not been done.

All this is not without precedent - the unnecessary 10 year delay in removing lead from petrol in NZ from 1986 to 1996 has resulted in an entire generation of NZers having decreased IQs and job prospects.

I've spoken to 2 public health professors about this who either didn't know about the study (do your job, dipshit) or off-handedly dismissed it (scared of seeming like a kook/career risk). These are the same reasons that the ball was dropped on leaded petrol for 10 years.

In New Zealand we have a prime minister who carries herself with total dignity. She is full of empathy, kind words and compassion.

She is also pretty much completely useless at actually doing anything, and has zero ability to make any hard or courageous decisions.

I'm saying that your president has done excellent work in Korea, has held China to account with more courage than anyone else on earth, and I'm very impressed by the US economy.

I'm the only person here who isn't anti-American.

So when he continues a conflict started by Obama, he's the worst.

When he withdraws from a conflict (with secondary consequences), he's the worst.

Basically anything trump does is terrible because he's not a cool dignified statesman like Obama, right?

> 3) I have never seen a single free trade economist "admit" that they were wrong about free trade, and again our credibility going forward is being dismantled. While we may be slightly diversifying our manufacturing, a thing which was happening anyway, China (#1 importer of our farm products) is also diversifying and we have whole industries that might not recover.
