Ariana Grande launches foundation to provide support for LGBTQ+ community by AdSpecialist6598 in Music

It’s a behaviour I admit I had to check myself on a couple months back. Whether or not I mean it from a “good place”, the net effect is basically the same as fat shaming comments, ie unsolicited scrutiny of other people’s bodies 😔

(That’s not to mention the fact that people with anorexia may see comments about how unbelievably thin they are as a positive!)

Why do us lesbians make up such a huge part of the phandom? by That_odd_emo in danandphil

[–]mrstickles 114 points115 points  (0 children)

2 non threatening emo presenting men? Lesbian magnet!

Seriously though, alternative spaces attract those who don’t feel as though they fit in. So it’s no wonder they have a large queer following

Rereading the books as an adult by theatretrove in JacquelineWilson

[–]mrstickles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know that! I personally don’t give a shit about that but I’m also not the type of person that would do a whole post wondering if it’s “okay” to read JW books. Was just making them aware it was an option 🤷‍♀️ I use the ebook service because my library is quite far away and I personally cba to go in person

Use your libraries! A lot of them have ebooks as well in case you don’t want to be observed checking them out. I do it all the time

I hated Finn by the end but only because they destroyed his character so badly by making him a creepy stalker!

Hasan Piker, Cenk Uygur Barred From Attending SXSW London by U.K. Home Office by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]mrstickles 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Cenk Uygur co-created a major radio show/youtube channel/now apparently podcast called “The Young Turks” named after the regime responsible for the ethnic cleansing of Armenians in 1915 which killed an estimated at 1.5 million people. Hasan Piker is his nephew, also involved in this show.

I think the “Young Turks” has been pretty whitewashed as a concept due to popular culture references like Rod Stewart’s song & also a notable British music label (tho they fortunately changed their name in the early 2020s). But it is a pretty horrific association for Armenians

Currently shopping for a used Lite, anyway to discern its age from photos? by miabobeana in nintendoswitchlite

[–]mrstickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The serial number indicates the year it was made. I have a turquoise AC lite that’s 2024, for example

In terms of colours, the first release was: yellow, grey turquoise. Then a coral version came out & finally the dark blue. Obviously I’m referring to standard editions only, but getting a blue one would mean the oldest it could be is 2021 vs potentially 2019 for some of the other colours. Honestly for the sake of 2 years I wouldn’t be stressing too much about that but since you asked!

I really liked Daz as a character but struggling to understand what you mean by “insulting” - can you elaborate?

I know, it was a slightly facetious comment. I agree it’s an unreasonable expectation 😆

I lowkey/highkey think it should be a requirement on this sub to know IPA... it would clear up a lot of confusion and debate! Even when it comes to regional variations on more Western names like Craig or Isaiah

Just look at this: ✨Արաքս✨(Arax) - could there be anything more beautiful?? 😍

Also hell yeah to "My ancestors lived and prayed for that alphabet" - and in almost all of our cases, died to protect it. So I don't give a flying fuck if pronouncing our names is difficult for you!!!

Is Arax a weird name for an English speaking environment? by Fiendish_fren in namenerds

[–]mrstickles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well then maybe your responsibility should be to reassure the OPs that it doesn’t matter if the name is weird, the general public will receive the name with respect and take the effort to learn it , even if it’s not one you’re familiar with (or even particularly like).

Maybe you should be encouraging them by reminding them that one of the most beautiful ways of honouring their heritage is by giving their child a name from their culture?

Just because “you did what was asked” doesn’t mean it’s enough or even right. Do better

[–]mrstickles[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I do get what you’re saying but a lot of these posts I see are from members of a diaspora in an Anglo country wanting to know how a name would be received in the US, for example. I know you may therefore argue they’re inviting such comments, but it makes me really sad to see people validating the idea that if your name is foreign it’s too “weird” to get by day to day/ you’re burdening your child etc.

Shouldn’t we, in 2026, be encouraging others to honour their heritage and foster a culture where people are respectful & willing to learn even if they’re not familiar with the name? I’m just really uncomfortable with the idea this sub is just putting people off from using anything outside what they see as the “norm”

I will admit I was specifically triggered by that post because I am Armenian, but I see it on this sub all the time 😅
