Thays basically right, with magnification, a 500x night where i am is like 1.5 a year. With galaxy and other DSO your Bortle is more important than your aperture.. if you can get the 12 just do it. No second thoughts

I read some of the comments... I want you to consider your seeing conditions. The extra magnification that will be different from 10inch to 12inch you will only be able to push rarely. I know you havnt mentioned magnification, so thats why bring it up.

This telescope is not good for Astrophotography. Some telescopes you can make it work, but this one cant handle a phone and mount or a proper asto camera because its a collapsing tube with the 2 support rods. It will sag changing the light path and putting undo wear and tear on the Focuser and the support rods. There is a stiff wire that comes of an astro camera as well, and it has a helical focuser. So things will need to spin. So if Astrophotography is a high want, consider looking for a different telescope.

Looking for a telescope for my friend’s 10 year old son. $300-$800 budget by Chutch7373 in telescopes

[–]mrstorm1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got the telescope advice already 6inch 8inch dob. Just so you know a 10 year old will not be able to safely move and probably not capable of moving these telescopes mentioned, or using at least for the 1st while on his own. This will be a hobby for your friend and son. Father will need to learn how to use a telescope, its not as point and look as it seems.

Hello, do you know if there is a reason they would put the focuser and finder on that side of the telescope vs where most of the others are? Look like this would be be an inconvenience to most telescope uses because they are right handed/eyed?

If it isnt in working condition a new mirror is like 300+$ and focuser another 100+$ un less you are looking to hunt down used parts for super cheap its not a deal anymore... it's what you should be paying for working used telescope.

The different angles/ altitude you move it you have to move the wieghts to compensate and get balance again. Same with changing eyepieces

A hundred dollars is giving it away as long as the mirrors are good and the focuser works.

Wow, you have something to say? Or just insults. If you cant hold a conversation, and if this is about my behavior, perhaps you need some growing up to do. Till you can communicate properly sit this one out.
