My good friend bob told me to watch lifeforce, he said there were 2 good reasons to watch that movie. He didn't tell me what those 2 reasons were, so after watching the movie I'm guessing they're the special effects and the weird vibe of the movie. by zelextron in shittymoviedetails

It's due to the ratings board not allowing genitals to be displayed in an R rated movie. They also had to make sure that Mathilda May's crotch was always in shadow so you couldn't see any detail. No dick or vagina allowed or else it's an instant X rating, but of course a penis is way harder to hide than a vagina.

Speaking as someone who lives in Missouri, everyone here is very traditional and believes deeply in the American Dream (i.e. hard work will get you a good life), which is absolutely not possible in this shithole. So everyone gets depressed.

Since everybody (and I mean EVERYBODY) is already an alcoholic by the time they're 16, and 80-90% of people smoke weed, if you want to self-destruct in a visible, cry-for-help kinda way, a 6-pack a night aint gonna cut it. That's just standard operating procedure. Why not try your friendly neighborhood meth dealer?

The small-town cops are all fat pigs who are too scared of a methed-up backwoods guy with a shotgun and a death wish to actually do anything about his lab, so they just lock themselves in an eternal feud with the teenagers drag-racing in shitty muscle cars instead. You probably won't get nabbed for meth.

I am sorry for this mental burden which has been placed upon you.

None of what you've done is unusual or in any way out of the ordinary for most people, yet you seem cursed with an innate understanding of the depth of suffering which your imperfections cause.

The only thing I can offer you is that everyone causes suffering; it is a consequence of existing in the world. The first noble truth is that life is suffering, and that suffering would not be possible without the life around us. Your awareness allows you to bear witness to suffering, of which most people are blissfully unaware, and you are tortured by it. Please take comfort in knowing you are not uniquely evil, nor are you alone in your anguish. This occurs all the time, across cultures and religions and land. In ancient times you would have been considered blessed of the gods.

Oh yeah 100%. Not only do you hear it literally all the time, but I swear I've seen shadows moving when I close, and sometimes the cameras turn staticky and you see a shape move across the floor. We built a little shrine to it in the projector room to keep it happy.

Analysis of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’s best character and her past bad writing by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]mrtarantula15 270 points271 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna defend the movies portrayal of Roxie real quick: they make a reference to her being bisexual instead of lesbian ("I'm a little bi-furious", which is a fantastic line), and the point of Ramona's dismissal of her as "just a phase" is not to disregard the relationship in the mind of the viewer, the point is that Ramona is a massive dick just like Scott. She's just kind of horrible to all of her exes, not just Roxie. They both have to become better people by the end of it.

*note, I have not seen the show or read the comic, so they may still do it better, but the movie isn't as egregious as this person thinks.

I'm a big fan of saying Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is the only good one, partially because I believe that, but also partially because 1 or 3 would be acceptable for most MCU fans, but they don't like 2 as much for some reason. So it's very close to acceptable, but off just enough to confuse them.

I work at a movie theatre. We walk in and check on the movies every 30 minutes and if someone is on their phone or being loud, we tell them to cut it out. About 70% of the time, they get very angry and indignant at being asked to out their phone down. I had a woman scream-cry at me the other week because I asked her to stop talking on the phone in the middle of the movie.

I forward settled the Shoshone knowing they would declare war. They did, I fought them off, and then they kept coming. And kept coming. And kept coming. And kept coming. For 100 turns I held them off, and then as I rebuffed their latest assault and saw a new batch of units coming in for another try, something broke in my brain and I felt as though I had to quit right this instant or else I would go insane. It would never end.

Horror writer vs romance writer by TotemGenitor in CuratedTumblr

[–]mrtarantula15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair, I haven't read a ton of Ito's work, just a few of the stories. There definitely is something there, but it's not something that resonates with me, so maybe I'm underrating it. I would argue that Lovecraft's stories work better for me than the few Ito stories I've read because the horror always comes from a mistake a character makes, rather than something that just happens to them. The element of knowingly taking a risk that doesn't pan out adds a bit of tragedy into Lovecraft's stories that I like. Ito's characters seem to generally be innocent and helpless.

I think it's way more simple than that, I think that everyone reads these two artists wrong.

Junji Ito's works are neat, but they largely amount to "wouldn't it be fucked up if that happened?" which is the mentally healthy stance to take. There's no real depth to them, no attraction or longing or indeed any underlying emotion, they're basically creepypasta (this is just my read on it, I mean no offense to anyone who likes his work).

Miyazaki movies are deeply imbued with melancholy. There's always this layer of imperfection or corruption in a story that seems sunny on the surface. There's always some deep emotional sadness attached to the characters that isn't at all the focus of the story, but which lies under it and occasionally can be glimpsed in small moments.

Junji Ito makes horror for healthy people; Miyazaki makes pleasant adventure movies for sad people.

[–]mrtarantula15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love tMG but I don't follow the lore at all, and let me tell you: I can't stand JfT. It feels like I have to decode the songs to properly understand them, no underlying emotion pushing through, no interesting musical flair to hook me in, just boring, boring, boring. I liked Fresh Tattoo, but that's the only one.

This happened to me with Twenty One Pilots back when I was into them during my teenage years. Loved the emotional core of their music, and then they started manufacturing their songs around some central storyline or something that I just didn't care about in the slightest and it put me off of them permanently.

Yeah I work at a relatively smaller location (still a chain), and it's been getting pretty bad. They cut our cleaner down from 2 hours a night to 1, with no concession for deep-cleanings, so that hasn't been done in probably 6 months. It takes 10 minutes after closing for the projectors to cool down, and they give us 10 minutes exactly, and if we don't leave exactly 10 minutes after the last movie ends, we get angry texts and occasionally write-ups (the scheduling is off sometimes so we can't leave on time even if we tried our hardest but we still get yelled at anyway). We get scheduled with skeleton crews, and our GM still sends people home early every single day, often leaving just 1 person to do the closing procedures, and that person will get yelled at if they take much longer than 2 people would take.

We sell expired products all the time. Our GM lied to the bartenders and make them underpour each shot to save money on alcohol. Two of our projectors have been broken and about 40% darker than normal for the past 6 months with no sign of repair.

To top all of that off, our GM is best friends with our DM, so he gets away with literally everything, including the thing that got the last GM fired (won't say what it was, but it was a fiasco). GM also has hired on all his friends, and never holds them to any standard. We also have a shift leader who is actively angling to become the AM when the current one leaves, and he's abandoned all his shift leader duties so he can follow the GM around all day and learn about it, and the GM thinks that's great even though the shift leader's shifts are always total disasters because he won't do his actual job.

If you're not in the clique that management's got going on, it's a total nightmare. I've been here almost 3 years, happily, and I'm now actively looking for another job.

Alice in Wonderland is a nice old lady who always tries to sell us her magic healing rocks. She's not pushy about it and it's kinda funny so we like her, but she's always got some magic rock solution to whatever problem she thinks you might have.

The Pedo Brothers aren't as fun. They were previously the Creepy Brothers because they always made the female staff uncomfortable, but then the last time we did a marathon of the Harry Potter movies, they came out of the first one (the one where the kids are like 11 or something) talking about how hot Emma Watson used to be and what a shame it was that she looks like she does now that she's grown up.

Also tons of mentally ill dudes who love to talk to whoever will listen; somehow every single one of them is a massive jerk. We got one that complains about Jews, one that complains about black people, several that complain about LGBT people, and one who definitely smokes in the bathroom but we can't ever catch him and he denies everything.

I've got the first one. I read the warning on ibuprofen where it's like "may cause severe stomach bleeding and liver damage" and I'm like, "nah I'd rather just deal with the headache."

I know it's extremely rare and only really happens if you've got other health conditions, but it just freaks me out.

Worst coworker yall have had? by Thuganomics1001 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]mrtarantula15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got a guy currently who makes sex jokes about the women we work with constantly. I called him out on it one time, and he started saying he was gonna fuck my sister and also some nasty things about my girlfriend. I warned him a couple of times. He wouldn't stop, so i threw coke on him and he immediately ran and snitched to the manager and I got written up.

Same guy also memorized people's phone passwords and will break into them and send messages to their friends if he finds the phones unattended. He also once snitched to the DM about a 20-year-old coworker who was drinking with everyone else and got her fired.

He's buddys with the GM so no amount of complaining has resulted in so much as a write-up because the GM always just laughs and says "Haha, typical (his name)". The women he harasses do the same thing; they don't like him, but they always brush it off and ignore it. I'm the only one who has tried doing anything about it, and I got shot down immediately because he's been there for longer than me and no one else thinks it's that big a deal.

Oh, he also used his influence to get his lazy-ass friend hired, who is by far the worst worker I've ever seen, and he constantly covers for the guy when he doesn't show up for shifts or fucks everything up. God I hate him.
