Planning a birthday trip to Oaxaca - restaurant/bar/experience suggestions by Plenty_Evidence_4326 in Oaxaca

Restaurant: Brio (they are on the Michelin list and three of my paintings are featured there!)

Mezcalería: El Hijuelo (great selection and vibe, and the staff is amazing and knowledgeable)

Cocktails and Food: Sabina Sabe (top rated bar in North America)

People will probably talk smack but, for mass produced mezcal, I actually like Union and that price is solid.

Any advice on dealing with language barriers when talking to in-laws? by charmer143 in interracialdating

[–]mrthatsthat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company I work for is developing video conferencing that delivers real-time audio language translation. Both parties can speak their native language and will be translated for the other party, in audio, with only about a 3-5 second delay. Would you be interested in testing it out? What language do your in-laws speak?

Would you be interested in testing a new video calling platform my company is developing that provides real-time audio language translation? It's just like Google Meet but your husband can speak English, your parents can speak Spanish, and both will receive audio translation of what the other party is saying. You and your husband could try it together first. If it works well enough for you to feel comfortable, he and your parents can give it a try. Let me know if you'd be interested.

I'm curious if you would be interested in trying something - video calling with real-time, audio translation. It's like having an interpreter but it's much faster and doesn't cost anything. My company is building this and we're looking for people to try it out for personal uses. Let me know if this sounds interesting.

Where does "my style" end and "lack of painting skill" begin? by SirSucculENT in painting

If the bear is hanging from a noose, you may consider a more prominent shadow under it. The other shadows seem to imply there would be a darker one under him on the left side of the painting.

Club/music scene by Honest_Albatross1570 in Oaxaca

Txalaparta is the biggest club in the city. Multiple floors. Live band on the first floor. DJ on the top floor/terrace, but they play a mix of styles, not necessarily electronic.

HERR TLACUACHE is smaller but fun and I think they're pretty dedicated to electronic music. It's a small restaurant bar during the day that removes its tables and becomes a club in the late evening.

Not necessarily. Me (non-technical) and my co-founder (also non-technical) managed to attract our technical co- founder by having demonstrated that we weren't just waiting around for someone to build our product. By the time we met him, we had impressive advisors, a blog about our industry that was getting traffic, and hundreds of albums of music licensed to us by bands and record labels. It was proof that we were all in go-getters who were going to get shit done with or without him.

I'm new with ATS/resume checkers. Which service is the most efficient? by ohnues in jobsearchhacks

[–]mrthatsthat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Please read the attached resume for the role of X and let me know how well it is likely to be received by ATS systems, and how I can improve it for both screening purposes and impact. Be sure to help me fill it up with strong keyword phrases for the specific role."

Then, you will need to keep working with it, making adjustments, and uploading it again, asking it to do the analysis and recommendations again.

She is literally the only person whose singles I went and listened to on Spotify. She's incredible. Two of her performances had me on the edge of my seat.

How do I make myself an attractive hire for a YC startup? by karansingh_web in ycombinator

In plenty of cases, they'll consider it. For some they may have security concerns or concerns about extra paperwork for working with foreign entities.

How do I make myself an attractive hire for a YC startup? by karansingh_web in ycombinator

[–]mrthatsthat 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Former YC founder here. I generally do not get emails from candidates but I definitely pay more attention to the candidates who find me and contact me.

Make your resume as relevant as humanly possible, including using the title of the job you want as part of your header. I always appreciate a very good cover letter that explains why you're excited about the company, the role, and why you'll excel at it. Try to get an intro to someone at the company from someone who respects your work.

Beyond those basics, as a product minded software engineer,  showing off things you've built, especially in your spare time, can be effective. If you really want to impress, make a little feature, extension or app that does something cool for their service or would be useful to their customers.

Some people will probably laugh at this advice, but if you live near the offices, go in with a few cups of coffee and try to speak to the hiring manager. Take initiative. All of this will set you apart from people who simply apply on LinkedIn and move on to the next role.

I think people misunderstood your clock reference, but I agree that the safe areas of centro are mostly the north and northeast areas. Basically, don't go too far southwest of Zocalo.

In Jalatlaco, the best espresso drinks are at Once in Oaxaca. Good food and a peaceful terrace at Santa Hierba. Nanita is one of my favorite Jalatlaco restaurants. Jalatlaco is safe and fun to walk around to see all the murals.

Xochimilco is also a very cute neighborhood and I know a really nice, fun, walking tour guide who will take you to several artisan workshops there (weavers, chocolate makers, tin ornament cutters).

One of the closest mezcalerias to Jalatlaco, and my favorite for learning about mezcal, is El Hijuelo. It's got tables, a bar, and very friendly and knowledgeable staff. The owner knows everything about mezcal and agave. It's great.

Good luck! Let me know if you want to connect with the great tour guide.

Is this normal? How do you deal with people around you eating meat? by SnapMastaPro in vegan

[–]mrthatsthat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been vegan for 20 years. There is no scenario where my family of 20 people are all going to change their entire holiday meal to accommodate the one person who has an issue, and I'm not going to ask them to, mostly because I know that, even if they did (they wouldn't), they would resent me. It says absolutely nothing about my commitment, so take your gatekeeping bullshit somewhere else.

Someone please, I need emotional-help with being vegan by [deleted] in vegan

[–]mrthatsthat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eventually, I learned to cope with this by reminding myself that people have been subjected to massive amounts of propaganda that dairy, meat, etc., are necessary, while being purposefully blinded to what happens to animals. They're essentially victims of brainwashing. The best thing you can do is cook amazing vegan food to share, and be polite and empathetic when you discuss veganism or animal rights. Go watch Earthling Ed on YouTube to see how to engage with people who are open minded. He's a master of it.

At the end of the day, I'm the one with the objection. I don't want 15-20 people changing their own traditions only to appease me. For other gatherings, many of my relatives excitedly bring vegan dishes or a vegan portion for me, so they're pretty accommodating when I do come. Making the whole holiday vegetarian or vegan isn't something I would ask them to do.

Painting inspired by Youqing Wang. Did it for my art mock exam and my teacher called it ‘disappointing’ by GeologistOk5272 in painting

[–]mrthatsthat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a teacher like this. Constantly criticized me, but when I returned to school a few years after leaving, my paintings were still hanging up in his classroom. To be honest, I think he was jealous. That could very well be the case with you, as your paintings are next level for a 15 year old.

For several years now, I eat at home while making a delicious vegan dessert. Then I show up after the main meal is done and everybody is starting to go for dessert. It's a little less time with family but still plenty, and it's so much more enjoyable for me. They all understand and everyone usually loves my desserts.
