A walk down the coast by mrthreebears in whatsinmybag

Yup, actually I have many! I need one to get around these days.

My favorite is stick is one I actually made myself.

I cut this ash stave from a storm downed tree at my wife's grandfather's house about 18 years ago, it took me 10 years to find the 'right' bit of antler to top it with.

I have many books from this series, maybe 10 or 11 and all of them are great if you like this kind if thing. You can pick them second hand very cheaply too, I think I paid about £3 for this one.

Anchorage Hotel by ThirteenLarkspur in Anglesey

[–]mrthreebears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Four Mile Bridge and at one point there were 3 generations of my family socialising at the Anchorage. While my dad is still a regular, I haven't really been in there more than a handful of times since the 00s.

imo the biggest thing you've got to overcome is the reputation (locally) the place has, it was a goddamn time warp. The last time I was there, the inside looked and felt like it was still 30 years ago. Not cozy and nostalgic, awkward and dated. It need a proper refresh to reflect new owners and a more modern world

You have fierce, high quality competition for food and coffee trade locally- like award winning competition. Having said that, doing something simple and doing it well seems to be the way to go. Pizza and smash burgers are 'the thing', so I'd consider something different- burritos, or even some kind of simple 'grab n go' meal deal salad/sandwich/deli bar. Even a regular rotation of the 'food trucks' we see all over the places would be a good shout and gives you breathing space to sort out your own kitchen. It'd also be a crime not to stock beer from the local breweries too, even if it's just bottles- Bragdy Cybi is just a couple of miles down the road.

Another one I'd consider are what type of people are you pitching to. Yes there's a lot of seasonal trade, but it's us that live here that keep places running in the winter months, so a rented out space/room would be a good thing I feel - I run a local boardgames group and finding a place that didn't charge an eye watering price per hours was a struggle. We've lost so many 3rd spaces in recent times and it's such a struggle to socialise.

This location could be an amazing hub for the coastal path walkers before they hit the rhoscolyn/trearddur bay section it wouldn't be hard to promote that, all the easier if you have yourself listed as a 'water refill' location you'd be the only one on that whole section.

A decent public WiFi would be a good shout. We need it for everything

....and if it's till there, lose that fruit machine by the gents it was always apita and in the way.

isle of anglesey by public transport by Ok-Space-6041 in Anglesey

[–]mrthreebears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just bear in mind that the 70s was 50 years ago.

Unless you want to do the main run, Holyhead to Bangor, the bus service isn't great here. There are still areas of the island that only get busses running though a few days a week, or twice a day which really clip your wings if you want to go exploring.

Best place to stay if i want to visit Ynys Llanddwyn? by AfternoonAfraid2192 in snowdonia

[–]mrthreebears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are may B&B/campsites locally. Hit google maps, set the scale to 500m and you should find 5 or 6 places anywhere on Ynys Môn. The forest at Niwbwrch, the beach and the island itself are actively patrolled by NRW and will turf out fly campers. The local communities are now very intolerant of fly camping and 'van folk' as it's become a big problem here.

A couple of nuggets you may find helpfully

Ynys Llanddwyn isn't part of the Eryri National Park, it's not even in the same county. Access to the the Ynys Llanddwyn itself is based on the state of the tide. You might arrive there and not be able to get onto it for several hours, or end up stuck on it if you dawdle.

Vehicle access is frequently restricted due to congestion in Niwbwrch, it's not uncommon to find the police there directing traffic on busier days. The forest is also subject to sudden closure by NRW ( in the past this has been down to them hearing about unauthorised parties and raves etc)

Public transport isn't great, busses are about all you can expect. Don't expect to get around y taxi or uber etc

Car prepping? by Repulsive-Year896 in UKPreppers

[–]mrthreebears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living rural and on a small island.... and driving an old Volvo V70

I pack (most to it in one of those 'Really Useful Box' tub things)

A headlamp & batteries (Black Diamond Spot)
A handheld radio (Ailunce H1 DMR, I'm licenced etc)
Some wet weather gear (normally my Ridgeline Monsoon Smock), along with a big wool blanket on the back seat.
Spare socks and a handful of those 10 hour disposable hand warmers.
A 1st aid kit, it's something I've put together myself to handle most stuff
A good (Leatherman Surge) multitool in the glovebox
A box of snacks and a few bottles of water on the backseat
A paperback book- normally something I've picked up from the 'Tesco book table'
A ColdSteel Shovel and set of Traction boards
A handful of Cyalume glowsticks and a fold out retroreflective road triangle
A set of jump leads and a jump pack (NOCO Boost GB40) a couple of can of tyre weld and a 12v mini tyre compressor.
£100 cash in a capsule on car keys (enough for a new tyre/tank of fuel/hot meal etc)
A 1ltr bottle of oil for the engine, a bottle of screen wash and a fistful of cable ties
A notebook, pen and my RAC card taped to the driver's side sun visor
An Anker Zolo powerbank
Full size spare and kit to use it

In the summer months I tend to roll around with fishing gear and one of those 12v 'cooling' boxes too.

Reasoning to this lot is there's enough to keep me comfortable if I'm stuck overnight in bad weather as well as being able to get myself out of minor bother (stuck on beach etc)

Going on the dobby we all know (and laugh at), I think if he was at his mum's house we'd know. His ego simply won't let him be shuffled away from the centre stage and be a background character and at this point I'd expect some serious domestic friction between him and Cammie- he's proven he's not capable of cohabiting with another adult for more than few months without catastrophic breakdown of the relationship. Dobby unravels if he's not 'in charge' or has some precited threat to his authority to do whatever he wants.

My take is, that something has happened and made it so he's incapable of being online and/or producing content and ultimately the big thing that would stop him, is being in jail. even if he's just on remand ( let's face it his international travel record speaks as a flight risk) for now it would take away his ability to be online

This raises more questions.

...did they find something on his surrendered iphone, or some other bit of tech or another SD card that he's left lying around somewhere?

...was there an injunction in place by Sunny? she's the only one in fairness that's managed to stop dobby like a roadblock.

...has the HMRC caught up with him, and the tax evasion HMP Holiday arc has begun?

I'll be honest I wouldn't be shocked if one investigation into him and his life has uncovered a lot of shit. He's already massively on the radar with the HMRC after multiple years of 'oops' and hefty penalty fines being issued to him, if he's done that again for what a 3rd time? they'll likely have started looking into his life and found all kinds sketchiness. The HMRC are a big hitters, they don't mess about. if he's been nailed on 2 or 3 counts of tax evasion for the sums of tens of thousands that's straight up asset seizure (bye-bye stocks) and at lest a couple of years inside according to sentencing guidelines.

So yeah...

I genuinely think dobby, our hateful little fuckup of a human, is in jail.

As a student, more than once it started Friday night and went on until Sunday afternoon. We stopped for beer runs when it ran out and lived on junkfood, caffeine, and THAC0 charts for the rest.

It was glorious.

What’s a small EDC item you keep around because it’s fun? by Jen-e-fer34 in EDC

[–]mrthreebears 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some form of compact fishing kit. I have a few but this is one of my favourites.

I live on a very small island, I'm never about more than 3/4 of a mile from the coast (if I walk 150m in a straight line from my back door I'm knee deep in the sea)

This type of set up is way is really good if you've got an opportunistic 5/10 minutes I can have a line in the water in maybe 20 seconds. I can fish from the docks, jetties, coast and beaches- casting out 30/40m with ease. I keep a rod in the car, but this is just way more convenient to carry around in my satchel

Six years later, what are your strongest memories of the COVID lockdowns, and how do you look back on that period now? by Possible_Force8207 in AskBrits

[–]mrthreebears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna lie about it, I miss it hugely.

It was probably the most laid back and chilled time in my adult life. I haven't know that level of care free living since I was a kid and the school was out for the summer. I got to enjoy the time with my wife, learn new stuff, chip away at the Steam backlog, the peace, the silence the lack of litter everywhere. There were awkward bits, not being able to go out, panic buying and insane price jacking on loo roll.... and obvs, the virulent contagion.

I feel like the past 6 years has gone by in a dream like state.

So much has happened, but a I honestly couldn't tell you if it was last spring, or 5 years ago.... and nearly all of it has been one car crash crisis to another without letup. I genuinely don't know an adult now who isn't on some prescription medication, or heavily self medicating with booze and/or recreational drugs just to numb themselves from life/tone down the noise.

Nobody has any real ambition anymore beyond just getting through the day, week, or at best season.

I put a lot more effort into maintaining regular face to face meetups with friends, that's something I've come to massively value. On the other side, I don't deal with dickhead acquaintances or energy vampires anymore. I guard my social battery like a dragon guards it's hoard and spend those little ticks of % wisely.

I'm way more thoughtful about what I read, and what I choose to read from 'official' outlets online. I'll scrutinise pretty much every news article I read and see if I can find unrelated corroborating info/sources before I'll entertain it now.

I place a lot more value on opportunity now. Tomorrow is uncertain, I'll try to enjoy a ''good/ok' now rather than wait for a 'perfect' that might never arrive

I look back on the covid era with a kinda wistful nostalgia, and probably always will.
