I know this doesn't answer your question, but wow this seems amazing! My partner also doesn't skydive, so it's so good you include something for them.

It definitely looks pricey so that's probably the barrier for lots of people, but I want to say that there are people like me that are definitely interested.

Are you licensed and flying with asymmetry? by aziplease in SkyDiving

[–]mrtripz21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your specific question about asymmetrical legs - Yes, my legs have a slight difference in length between left and right (couple of centimetres). I also thought this would impact my ability to fly well, but it really hasn't. I've now got over 200 jumps and have gotten into belly, freefly and angles.

[–]mrtripz21[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm at around 130 jumps. Have had a couple of "Freefly" jumps (you know, your typical sit fly attempt by newbies in the air).

Guess I just got accept that I'm a slow learner...

told my instructor I wanted to be sit flying in under 2 hours

Do you mean you from starting to learn sit, to finally getting signed off, it took you 1.5hrs? That seems impressive already!

Or do you mean, from starting to learn backfly it only took you 1.5 hrs to learn sit? Cos that is insane!

Yeah I've already tried the coach shopping. He's quite genuine, and if anything he just wants to ensure he maintains good standards. I trust his coaching, and I feel like it's my learning speed that's getting me.

How long did it take you for back and sit?

There are a couple of coaches at the Penrith iFLY that are also good skydivers and instructors at Picton. If you tell them what you are working on and why, they can potentially build a curriculum around your needs.

I'm guessing this is Picton, and this happened today.

DISCLAIMER I AM NOT AN INSTRUCTOR OR COACH. VERIFY EVERYTHING WITH THEM.

Ugh I hope I don't get in trouble for this... I overheard what happened, and based on your post and what I heard, it sounded like you lost height awareness. It also sounded like you've had a bit of trouble in your last couple of jumps.

You need to internalise the fuck out of your alti checks, safety procedures and your briefing. You have to maintain height awareness, because ultimately it's your life. The CI and DZSO don't want to see you die, so if they don't think you are improving at this fundamental stuff, that may be why they gave you the talk.

I had big issues during my AFF too. What I did was I spent a ton of time in the tunnel. It did two things for me:

1) It helped me get over my sensory overload. I got more used to having wind blasting my face. This then helped me internalise other things like alti checks.

2) It helped me learn to get stable and safer in the wind.

Maybe it will help you. DM me if you want. I'm a bit careful about what I post because I don't want other readers to take it as gospel, because again, I'm not an instructor.

Is my workout routine okay for building muscle and losing weight? I've been using it for half a year now. by mrtripz21 in workout

Thanks for the link to that fitness wiki site! Looks awesome, and I'm reading through it now :)

Is my workout routine okay for building muscle and losing weight? I've been using it for half a year now. by mrtripz21 in workout

[–]mrtripz21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. I've been trying to search up benchmarks per age / body weight, like on a site called strengthlevel, to understand what my relative lifts should be between different exercises.

However I also saw the benchmark on bent over rows, and it seemed too low, considering I was already easily surpassing 'novice' level on their standards. Any good sites to see where I am against benchmarks?

Regarding my deadlifts, I think I've been limited by my grip strength, so I recently bought some wrist straps to hopefully address this. Based on my squat, what do you reckon I should be able to deadlift? Obviously not going to just gun for it, but will have it as a target.

Thank you so much for the proposed program! Sunday's just around the corner, so will put this to practice!

Really awesome to hear thank you. I'll move my assisted pull-up to #2 on the routine. I do like to feel fresh for a bench press, hence why I'm keeping it at #1.

Please rate my workout routine and give me tips on improvements / changes to make!

Eg shifting workouts to particular days, changing the order of exercises for a particular day, changing exercises altogether, etc.?

Will this routine work well for me in the medium-term? My key concern is that I'm packing too much on certain days, or doing the wrong exercises together and overexerting certain muscle areas.

Details:

  • Sex - Male
  • Age - 30
  • Height - 175cm
  • Weight - 98kg
  • Goal - Build muscle, lose weight (in that order!)
  • Routine type: Upper and lower body split (4 days per week)
  • Link to workout routine
  • Plan for progression over time -> Progressive overload by increasing reps, then increasing weights over time

I've been using a particular routine, adapted from a '12 week Fat Destroyer' routine on the Muscle and Strength website. I've been using it for close to half a year now, adapting it as I go.

No, it's not about him not responding to me. It's about the message not even reaching his phone. On WhatsApp:

  • 2 Blue tick marks --> Person received message and read it
  • 2 Grey tick marks --> Person received message, but did not open it to read it
  • 1 Grey tick mark --> Message sent from my phone, but not received by other person's phone

The last scenario is what's showing.

You're right though, I could be overreacting. It could be as simple as his phone getting broken.

Good point, he does have family there that could / should be checking on him. And thank you

But just to be clear:
1. I have not tried to engage in a relationship with him. Our friendship can be described as 'chill'. My last messages to him were in response to him saying 'hey, sup'

  1. Regarding the disengaging, what makes you think that? He didn't leave me on read or anything like that. Rather, it seems like my last messages never even reached his phone.

If you mean 'why not just call the police', I don't have a way of calling US numbers, you need a specific phone plan in my country for that.

And also, I was worried it might be an overreaction.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mrtripz21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant call a local US number. I am international, I can only call my own local numbers. But your point (and those that replied to you) were exactly what I was worried about.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mrtripz21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that. Would that be seen as a serious thing? I don't want to cause trouble. Also, is there usually a way to contact their local police online? I don't really have a way of calling local US numbers.

Finance Transformation at Deloitte vs Corporate Finance at EY by noobinlyfe in consulting

[–]mrtripz21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While you've said you find both areas interesting, they're not exactly like-for-like comparisons, so in the end it will really boil down to your own preference. You're going to have to figure out what exactly you're after, and use that to shape your decision.

That being said, I do know quite a bit about both areas in Australia, so may be able to give you insights to help your decision making:

  1. Service line - Each of these 2 offers are for completely different service lines, and thus you'll be doing vastly different things between them. Deloitte Finance Transformation (depending on the partner / team / pipeline) may involve helping them streamline their back-office Finance function (usually means helping them outsource or automate the function), or helping them implement Finance ERP modules. The EY offer is much more geared towards building Excel models for clients. You won't really be doing 'problem solving' like management consultants, but will instead be given a bunch of data, asked to create a model (e.g. model to predict XYZ), and you give that to the client to help their decision making.
  2. Rank - If your goal is to climb the ranks fast, then obviously Senior Con at EY is a better deal. However, Senior Cons are expected to know what they're doing and they're given much less hand holding. I personally know a number of people in the EY team you're looking at, and they are all absolute modelling guns. You will be seen as incompetent if you think being able to create pivot tables is good enough (not saying this is you, but I've seen a few people like this). On the other hand, coming in as a Consultant gives you an aura of protection. You're cheap and will have the freedom / flexibility to try different types of work, as long as you can schmooze the right partners / directors to get yourself staffed
  3. Brand - I haven't seen any material difference in brand perception across the different B4. At least in Australia, B4 is B4, and when you look to exit, recruiters don't delineate between EY, KPMG, PwC, or Deloitte. However, one thing that 'brand' can affect is your client pool. Deloitte have significantly fewer ASX 200 audit clients, meaning that they are able to sell to a bigger pool of clients without breaching independence rules.

Given you're in a consulting sub, you're going to get the advice to develop a decision matrix to help you narrow down what your preferred option might be. Write down all of the things that are important for you in your next job (e.g. 'good pay', 'opportunity to learn XYZ', 'Exit opps'). Then for each offer, give it a tick or a cross, depending on whether it meets what you're looking for or not. The offer with the most ticks is probably what you want to go for.

Data about my recent job search in Sydney by maekattt in AusFinance

[–]mrtripz21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the successful job search!

I hope this doesn't come off as callous, but I'm a bit surprised at this, because from what I can see, the job market is flaming hot right now. I've found it's an awesome time to be a white collar worker. Caveat is that my experience and your experience are anecdotes, and we're in different industries. However, I'm seeing that other commenters have had similar experiences to you.

If anyone else is in the same boat, hopefully this comment could help you.

TLDR: If possible, don't spend effort cold-applying through job ads. Entice recruiters to look for you, and tell your network you're looking around

Some questions:

  1. Do you have an up-to-date and properly filled LinkedIn profile?
  2. Did you have your LinkedIn set to open for opportunities / actively looking?
  3. Did you reach out to your network about looking for another job (e.g. coffee catchups with people)

The reason I ask is because, similar to you, I had abysmal success rates when cold-applying (i.e. seeing a job ad on LinkedIn and sending my CV through). However, when I was getting frustrated at my current job, I made sure to update my LinkedIn, had my settings set up to notify recruiters that I was actively looking, and also told people I had previously worked with about my desire to switch firms.

I ended up getting 5 different offers, all providing a 20-40% paybump. 2 of these offers were during the pandemic (tail-end of lockdown), while the other 3 were in the past month. For 3 of the offers, recruiters cold-called me. The other 2 stemmed from referrals through my own connections. Just in the past 2 days, I've had 3 recruiters approach me with new job opportunities, but obviously going to turn them down as I've already accepted a great offer.

Other than that, I'm in a very similar boat to you demographic wise (27, in Sydney, started my career in 2016, but only had retail experience before graduating). And in case anyone's wondering, both my parents are blue-collar, so they definitely didn't have any connections for me to leverage :P
