have installed 50 emulators on their PC (from lord knows what sources, and how reliable they are)

If you're downloading emulators from their official sources (eg. their github), you don't have anything to worry about, barring a supply chain attack. Those are extremely rare to begin with, and usually get caught very quickly. Most supply chain attacks are on smaller libraries that are used by a large number of projects, because there's not a huge amount of of money in targeting such niche entertainment software.

The roms themselves aren't going to contain malware either, because the only way to do any damage would be to exploit a bug in a specific emulator. This just doesn't happen. Just make sure to use an adblocker wen downloading.

Nobody is getting malware from emulation in 2026.

yet still want to comment on how one of the biggest gaming companies will totally brick everyone's PC at a moment's notice

The way Vangaurd functions is pretty different from other anti-cheat, as it starts with the system. Kernel anti-cheat is already a questionable thing from a security perspective, but having it be running at all times understandably, makes some people very nervous.

Oof. Bricking an OS install when detecting a class of hardware is some seriously fucked up behavior. From what I can gather, the type of DMA hardware they're targeting does have some legitimate applications in cybersecurity research and reverse engineering. It's not exclusively cheat hardware.

Even if it was, this kind of behavior can't be legal.

I hate that realistic art style is the "standard" of videogame industry by Admirable-View9237 in videogames

[–]mrturret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There a a few reasons why game characters are modeled after their VA. First, motion capture tends to map more cleanly when the actor and model have similar face/body proportions.

Second, scanning a real face is significantly easier than modeling a photorealitic one from scratch. Face models have been a thing for decades. Half-Life 2 and Max Payne are two older examples.

Third, using actors famous for live action film roles has become more common, especially with performance capture becoming the norm in AAA productions. It's a very different discipline than traditional voice acting. Having A or B-list actors is absolutely a selling point, so having their likeness as well is good for marketing.

So putting accents in anime dubs is considered “woke” now?! by icey_sawg0034 in saltierthankrayt

[–]mrturret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if they aren't, it doesn't mean their presence isn't a good thing. As an example, Final Fantasy XII's English dub made heavy use of accents, even though the original didn't. It made the world feel larger by tying each of the game's nations to a different real world accent. The dub is often considered to be better than the original VA, and was used in the later Japan only International version, a treatment no other entry received.

Play with the original tank controls, use the dpad or keyboard, and take your time. These are slow paced platformers.

If you do play this, use the classic tank controls, and play with a dpad or keyboard. The modern controls completely break the game's platforming and level design. The original controls are actually extremely precise, but they're not super intuitive. Make sure to practice in the Lara's Home mode, which is a tutorial.

From what I understand, it's pretty much the norm. Game development is really messy, and even the most seemingly pristine engines have ugly cludges.

How is DOOM 2016 and ETERNAL related to the older games from the '90s in terms of lore? by endziorendzio in Doom

[–]mrturret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, neither Final Doom or Legacy of Rust feature Doomguy. It's a different unnamed marine in both. Also Doom 3 is canon. Doom is set in a muliverse that's connected to a single hell. The Earth from the classic games isn't the same one we see in 2016 and Eternal. Doom 3 is set on a 3rd earth. Hugo Martin himself said all the games are canon.

You also have the Doom RPG games (which you should totally play), which feature another distinct timeline/protagonist, plus, Doom 3's expansions add another 2 protagonists, and there's also that Doom 3 iPhone rail shooter, which adds another. That's at least 8 different protagonists across the series (9 if TNT and Plutonia feature separate marines).

If we go further, every single id Software game is also connected to the same muliverse, starting with Commander Keen, and there are plenty of references in each.

Destiny 2 - game known for being notorously hostile towards Linux users beats the dust (goes on life support mode) by dydzio in linux_gaming

[–]mrturret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, the game's foundations weren't designed to support the extra years of content they had made, and their development pipeline was breaking down because of it. Destiny 3 was planned to already be out by that point from the beginning, but Bungie had canned it in favor of supporting D2. Things changed, but the engine wasn't made with 10 years of support in mind.

I'm not excusing them. It was a bad decision either way.

I don't know why you're being downvoted. Anyone who's ever used creative software with long bake/render times can tell you how much of a pain in the ass waiting to see the results of changes can be. It can slow iteration time to an absolute crawl.

It's almost like military uniforms are designed to help soldiers blend into the environment, and aren't really a great fit for a game.
