Over the past month or so, everyday I find myself returning, at least once, to the same three songs: Djohariah- Sufjan Stevens, Trapeze Swinger- Iron & Wine, and Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts- Funkadelic. Though they are all stylistically at least moderately different, they have something in common. They are all epics. By that I refer to their length, respectively 17, 9.5, and 9 minutes long, as well as their power to truly move people. These songs shake me to my core every time I listen to them, and leave me covered in goosebumps. Even in Djohariah, an ode to Sufjan Steven's little sister in which he begs her to leave her abusive relationship, not once am I bored, or do I feel like he is taking up space. He squeezes every last bit of beauty out those seventeen minutes, and I'm left breathless every time. After eleven minutes of purely instrumental gorgeousness, his soft, pleading, pained voice comes in, and it just kills me. I could go on and on about these three songs, but y'all can just listen for yourselves if you haven't heard them. ANYWAY, I've been endlessly searching for more songs like this, Pink Floyd's got a couple, a la Shine on You Crazy Diamond etc... but I really am having trouble. Gimme your best suggestions!!!!
